Metal/Soft Material Gaskets

In static applications that require high operating pressures to

be compensated, the seal in a flange connection must bear
higher bolt loads during installation than for the pre-deformation
alone. The mounting force creates an initial surface
pressure on the seal that might push them from the sealing gap
and can possibly destroy them. This might occur before the
operating condition has even been reached.

In order to prevent this over-pressing, the soft sealing materials

are kept in chamber systems for such applications. The support
is ensured by metal. However, the type of system used for the
support may vary. Different types have prevailed.

The simplest form of support is realized with foil inserts.

These foils may be textured or smooth. For textured foils, the
tang steel foil is most widely used. However, the perforated
steel foils are used in premium Garlock products, such as the
Gylon 3560, which you can find in our Gylon brochure as
a high pressure solution.

In North America, the spiral wound gaskets are very common

primarily in applications with ASME flanges. In this system,
a soft material strip is wound to a spiral together with the preformed metal strip, where the beginning and the
end of the spiral are welded in order to keep them from unravelling. Optional support rings on the interior and/or
exterior provide additional support and facilitate the installation. The preformed metal strip serves the purpose
of encapsulating the soft material. This seal type is regulated by ASME B16.20 and DIN EN 1514-2 as well
as DIN EN 12560-2.

The Kammprofile gaskets are more suitable for the lighter DIN EN flanges. A solid metal carrier is profiled on
the flange contact sides concentrically like with a comb. The double-sided soft material layer is pressed into
the cavities and encapsulated there during pre-deformation. An overhang of about a tenth of soft material
between the profile tips and the flange sealing surface ensures that the coarseness of the flange is compensated
and the sealing system thus remains functional. This seal type is regulated by DIN EN 1514-6 and DIN EN 12560-6.

Garlock metal/soft material gaskets also prove to be reliable in non-standardized applications. Custom shapes
and dimensions may be implemented as well. The calculation of the necessary bolt loads makes secure sealing
solutions possible for all of your special applications. The combination of soft materials with different metals also
allows for a wide range of applications to be realised while taking the temperature and medium into consideration.

Specifications:
We supply products by dimension tables according to American and European dimension standards for ASME
and DIN/EN flanges as well as special applications.

Applications:
Garlock metal/soft material gaskets are used in power plants with various forms of energy, chemical and
petrochemical plants, boiler and apparatus construction, manhole hand hole covers or other openings in
the steam cycle, high-pressure pipelines, heat exchangers, as well as local energy and water companies.

FLEXSEAL® Spiral Wound Gaskets

Spiral wound gasket: With graphite or PTFE filling

The sealing material is wound to form a sealing zone of
approx. 4.5 mm thickness by means of a preformed metal
strip. The choice of material depends on the medium and
temperature demanded by the application. The inner ring,
which supports the spiral to keep it from unwinding,
is made from material that is of identical or higher quality
than the material for the metal strip spiral. An outer ring or eccentric ring
of corrosion-resistant structural steel can also be provided. The encapsulation rings
are approx. 3 mm thick. The standard is generally that the seal includes an inner
and an outer ring, which is now also reflected in ASME B16.20. Any deviations
must be indicated explicitly.

Style RWI:
For flanges with a sealing strip (RF) or flat sealing surface (FF).
Spiral wound gasket with inner and outer ring. In this model,
the spiral is protected against unwinding during high surface pressures.
Style RWI is assumed as the standard for spiral wound gaskets. Deviating models must be indicated by the client.

Style RW:
One-sided encapsulation or eccentric ring for flanges with a smooth
sealing surface (RF and FF). This style is always used for lower pressures,
which do not require quite such a high installation pre-tensioning, or for boiler openings with an inner abutment.

Style SWI:
For flanges with one-sided encapsulation (e.g. MF flange). The spiral is kept
from unraveling by means of the flange design, regardless of the pressure level.

Style SW:
For flanges with double-sided encapsulation (tongue and groove flange).
The spiral is encapsulated in the groove and thus prevents it from unwinding,
regardless of the pressure level.

Kammprofile Gaskets

Kammprofile Gasket
With graphite, PTFE, or ceramic bracket

The sealing material is fixed on the sealing zone of a

metallic carrier as a bracket. The groove-shaped
concentric ground of the bracket receives the sealing
material entirely, except for a minor overhang (0.1 mm - 0.2 mm),
and holds it in place after the surface pressure is applied. This prevents the
sealing material from being blown out or running off due to the high surface
pressure. The thin overhang sufficiently seals flange coarseness up to Rz 50μm.

Design:
Kammprofile spiraled in core of 4 mm thickness with double-sided soft material bracket each 0.35 mm for PTFE, 0.5 mm
for graphite, 0.8 mm for Gylon blue. Eccentric ring integral approx. 2 mm thick; loose approx. 1.5 mm thick.

Style 642 A:
Parallel profile for flanges with tongue and groove (TG).The seal does not contain
an eccentric ring and is dimensioned to be placed in a groove.

Style 642 AR:

Parallel profile for flanges with a sealing strip (RF) or flat sealing surface (FF). The seal contains an integral eccentric ring,
which is manufactured in one piece along with the core body.
It is supported by the screws and prevents any unwanted
shifting during installation.

Style 642 AR2:

Parallel profile for flanges with a sealing strip (RF) or flat sealing surface (FF).
The seal contains a loose eccentric ring, which is closed
around the core retroactively by means of adhesive spots but
still remains flexible along the core. This style may be necessary for large diameters
in the case of high temperature differences between the inner and outer regions of the seal.
