spent most of his child-
hood growing up in the
neighbouring community
of Neepawa and attend-
ing school in Glenella. He
is the second youngest in
a family of five children to
parents, Tom and Giselle.
From a very early age, his
parents knew Matteo was
going to be something spe-
cial. “Matt always had a
lighthearted approach to
life,” explained his Mom,
Giselle. “He was always
willing to try anything and
enjoyed sports. He has al-
ways had a compassionate
heart and big personality.”
In the summer of 2015,
after graduation, Matteo
moved to Minnedosa.
The following Spring,
Matteo’s life would be sent

at the Ford dealership in
Neepawa, he slipped off a
car lift and broke his leg.

concluded.

Town Council Passes Financial Plan as Presented

on the evening of Tues-
day, May 14th in Council
Chambers. Mayor Skatch
presided with all council-
lors in attendance.
The meeting opened
with a delegation from the
Rolling River School Di-
vision Board of Trustees,
represented by Shauna So-
tas-Burton. Shauna shared
some of the board’s con-
cerns about the provincial
government’s education
review and encouraged
all members of council
to write letters or provide
feedback through an on-
line survey. Two issues
that are of great concern
for the RRSD board are
the possibility of school
board amalgamations and
appointed trustees rather
than elected trustees.

Summer Recreation Program Expected to be Busy

sa’s Summer Day Camp
Coordinator.
Robin is the daughter
of Glen Bell and Andrea
Playter and grew up in
Minnedosa. She has com-
pleted her third year of
Brandon University, taking
her Bachelor’s degree with
a major in psychology and
a minor in sociology. Rob-
in is hoping once she has
completed that she will re-
turn to school to obtain her
Master’s degree as well.
Robin enjoys working
activities as inclusive as
possible. She has experi-
ence working at the local
daycare facility, volunteers
with SwimAbility out of
Brandon, and is a respite
worker.
All eight weeks for
the day camps have been
planned. The first week of
camp starts on July 2nd go-
ing all the way until August
23rd.
Robin has been busy
planning and finalizing the
Summer Activities and is
very eager to start every-
thing come July. Camps
and Programs available

to kindergarten in the fall)
to 12. This program allows
kids to go out and have fun
and take part in different
activities throughout town
and surrounding areas.
Teen Hangout is for
youth aged 13 to 15. There
will be a variety of activities
offered including bowling,
golfing and kayaking.

the summer. Focus will be
on physical literacy and
fine motor skills. Toddlers
will have fun interacting
with peers and meeting

commencing the week of June 1st

The Flushing Program will be conducted from
7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.;

home. “Like most young
people, I travelled and
wandered around before
having responsibilities and
obligations,” stated Gor-
don. “I had a wonderful
time meeting new people
and learning new things.
I managed to get all of
that out of my system and
settle down with my wife
and family in Minnedosa
around 12 years ago.”
Art, along with two
acquaintances, took a Tipi
Workshop on a whim and
from there, he has never
looked back. “I had zero
experience with any of this,
I didn’t even know how
to sew,” recalls Art. “Just
like these kids here, I had

The TCS tipi project
started off as an outlined
and organized project,
with each class having
scheduled time to come
and take part. After the first
day, it was soon realized
that the outline needed to
be trashed and the term
“winging it” was born.
“We soon learned that this
had to be organic and just
whatever will be will be,”
explained Rapsky.
“I have worked with
small groups in schools,
on a much smaller scale,
but to do a whole school
is something I have never
done. It was very obvi-
ous to me on day one that
much of what I thought we
would do changed quick-
ly,” recalled Art.
The overall goal of the
project and teachings for
Art, is the sharing of what
we have as indigenous
people. “I see attitudes and
beliefs changing now,” said
Art. “For centuries, our

hear a presentation from
historian Gordon Golds-
borough. The event was
hosted by the Minnedosa
District Museum and Heri-
tage Village Corp prior to
its annual general meet-
ing.
Gordon’s presentation
focussed on his latest book,
More Abandoned Mani-
toba: Rivers, Rails and Ru-
ins, a sequel to his highly
successful Abandoned
Manitoba book which was
released in 2016.
In addition to being
the author of four books,
Goldsborough is a highly
active member of the Man-
itoba Historical Society,
regular guest of CBC Ra-
dio, an aquatic biologist at
the University of Manitoba
and a former director of
the Delta Marsh Field Sta-
tion.
More Abandoned
Manitoba is a 280-page
book published by Great
Plains Publications which
continues the record-
ing of abandoned places
throughout the province
and the history and stories
behind them. The building
featured on the cover of
this book, the dilapidated
one-room Gourlay School
northeast of Brandon has
since been demolished,
as has the abandoned
grain elevator at Brookdale
which was featured on the
cover of Goldsborough’s
earlier book, Abandoned
Manitoba.

OBITUARY
GWEN CRAWLEY
MARCH 22ND,1949 - March 2nd,2019
On March 2nd, 2019 Gwen Crawley passed away after a short but courageous battle with
cancer. As was her wish, she was in her home and surrounded by her family and pets until the
end.
She is survived by her husband Harry, children Joe, Caitlin (William), and Hugh (Erica),
granddaughters Rhiannon and Teagan, sister Frankie (Jim), and nephew Chris (Candance).
Gwen was born in Winnipeg on March 22nd, 1949 to Hugh and Francis “Jimmy” Williams.
She grew up in St. Vital with her parents and older sister Frankie. After living for a year in Saska-
toon and Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan she moved back to Winnipeg in 1969. In November 1970
she moved into the Gannon apartments - As it turned out in the apartment right next to Harry.
They met on Remembrance Day when Harry asked to borrow a cup of butter. One thing led to an-
other and two years later they were married and moved into their first house on Baltimore Road.
In 1974 they welcomed Joe into the family and relocated to Ash Street. In 1977 Caitlin arrived and
the next year the family moved to Churchill Drive where they remained for eleven years. In 1980,
after several prior jobs focused on helping the most vulnerable, Gwen began what would be her
career for the next 39 years at Klinic Community Health Centre as a medical assistant and proud
“pamphlet lady.” In 1989 Gwen and the family made their final move out to Sapton Road which
coincided with the arrival of Hugh. For the next 29 years Gwen enjoyed many summer days on
the porch swing and winter nights in front of the fire usually with a cup of tea in hand. During her
final years some of her happiest times were spent by the lake at Matlock especially when she was
joined by her Children and Grandchildren.
Interment will take place at All Saints Cemetery on June 8, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Family and
friends welcome.

JOYCE MARIE DOUGLAS
Janary 5th, 1939 - May 12th, 2019
Joyce Marie Douglas (nee Sherris) passed away peacefully,
with loved ones by her side, at the Assiniboine Centre on Sunday,
May 12th, 2019 at the age of 80 years.
Joyce was born in Winnipeg on January 5th, 1939. Joyce
was adopted by Fred and Eva Sherris and lived on the family
farm near Moore Park, MB. She attended school at Moore Park
Consolidated School until grade eleven, and then completed her
grade twelve education at St. Michael’s Academy in Brandon.
As a teen, Joyce fell ill with Rheumatic Fever at Christ-
mas time. She recovered in bed, at home on the family farm
for 4 months. These were lonely times for a 15/16 year old. She
did, although, recover in time to continue her Commercial Business
studies at St. Michael’s Academy, graduating in May 1957, and began
working on the First of June that year. After graduation, Joyce held a
variety of positions. She began her work career as a stenographer at Anglo Canadian Oils in
Brandon, and held positions at Manitoba Federation of Agriculture, Office Overload, Walter
Wray Limited, Keewatin Community College, Niagara Community College, Niagara Cyclo Mas-
sage, Valley Royal Travel Services, McCallum Electric and Travel Smart. Joyce also worked at the
Neepawa Health Unit for the Province of Manitoba until retiring in 2001. After retirement, Joyce
enjoyed working at Alia and then Tan Jay stores. Of all her jobs, Joyce loved her time at the travel
agencies the best!
Joyce belonged to the Minnedosa 4-H Beef Calf Club; enjoying public speaking and judging
competitions. While attending the 4-H meetings she met Harvey, her future husband. There is
some truth in the saying, “4-H Ain’t all Cows and Cookin’.” When the family returned to the farm
at Moore Park she was a 4-H Leader with the young people and assisted with cooking. Joyce
also was involved with the Big Brothers and Sisters, UCT Minnedosa, Moore Park Community
Hall Board, and the Mood Disorder Association of Manitoba. Joyce always enjoyed music, taking
vocal lessons at the Brandon School of Music, now Brandon University, winning her class at the
Virden Arts Festival, three years in a row in Vocal Studies. She often found humour in her situa-
tion, singing in The First Baptist Choir, while attending St. Michael’s Academy and being raised
Anglican. She and Harvey enjoyed curling at Roseneath Curling Club, Moore Park and taking
in bonspiels in various towns around the area, even having a family rink one winter at Rapid
City. “We didn’t win many games but we had lots of fun,” she later reminisced. With Harvey, she
participated in 5-pin bowling in Minnedosa for over 10 years and enjoyed all the camaraderie,
even winning her share of ‘Skunk’ pins over the years. With close friends Ramona and Cecil Spar-
row, they enjoyed playing cards for over 56 years, (but have to admit the girls did not win their
fair share of the games). Harvey and Joyce enjoyed dancing over the years, going on trips to visit
family and friends, and delighted in celebrating their many years of marriage with friends and
family. She has enjoyed travelling to Hawaii, Guatemala, New Orleans, England, Scotland and
Wales, as well as cruising to Alaska and the Western Caribbean. Also, while working in the travel
industry she made work trips to Fiji, Australia, British Isles, and a School at Sea Cruise.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 60 years, Harvey, half- brothers Doug White and Ian
(Petty) White of Brandon, son Ian and wife Barbara, Jocelyn (Ben), Sheri (Kris) and great grand-
daughter Isabella; son James and wife Amber, Jasmine (Andrew) and Sherris; daughter-in-law
Debbie (Scott – deceased), Ashley (Mitch), Brandi and Carly and great grandchildren Madison
Bjerregaard, Payton and Rhett Matthews.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents Frederick and Eva Sherris, infant sister Loraine Eva,
son Duncan Scott Douglas, sisters and brothers-in-law Maxine and Alex Douglas, Shelagh and
Robert (Bob) Douglas and her half-brother William (Bill) White, along with many aunts, uncles
and cousins.
