Hospitals nowadays are more careful with the way the institution is ran, the approach to
surgeries, plans for surgeries, and what occurs in the middle of operations. Before surgeries, the
doctors make sure the operation area is sterile along with making sure the patient doing okay
under anethstesia. The doctors and nurses all have what are called pagers. Pagers help the
doctors contact a nurse when a patient is having a health issue, if a nurse needs to go in a surgeon
room and help perform immediate surgery, etc. Performing and have a surgery operated on you
are now safer than what they used to be. Back in the late nineteenth and early twentieth doctors
and nurses weren’t that aware of what they were doing when it came to performing a surgery.
Half the time the surgeon room was not sterilized after a previous surgery. Sometimes a surgery
that would be going on would be a practice to the doctor and the nurses as well. Performing and
being operated on during those two centuries were very risky, because occasionally gauze would
be left in a patient's abdomen, the area they got surgery on would get infected a lot easier, and so
much more. Doctors had a hard time connecting and reaching nurses when they were needed at
the most because they did not have pagers at the time.
Intermountain Hospital is one of the largest care taking centers; They have 22 hospitals
and over 185 small clinics in Utah and Idaho as well. The doctors and nurses believe that in

order for a person to live up to their healthiest life, is by helping is by curing them. The facility is
dedicated in making sure that their patient receives little to no harm and the patient is satisfied
As I turned into the parking lot and attempted to find a place to park, the lot was filled
with all different types, models, and colors of vehicles. When I stepped out of my black Chevy
Colorado, the weather was brisk and the wind was harsh. While walking up to the large sliding
glass doors, a man about 40 years of age came sprinting across the street and ran through the
doors. As soon as I entered the large doors, a clean, musky smell instantly hit me; Colors of
white and blue throughout the hallways was almost a little to overwhelming, due to the fact it
was so bright in there. The brightness made me feel like I was staring directly into the sun.
After roaming around through the hallways, I eventually found my way to the cafeteria.
The smell of freshly cooked breakfast filled my nose with much pleasure. When I entered the
kitchen area, I grabbed a tray, placed a small bottle of orange juice, hash browns, breakfast
sandwich placed on an english muffin, and a small carton of french toast sticks. Walking up to
the register to pay for my food, there was a MD wearing mint green scrubs and a surgeon cap
standing a good two feet in front of me. As soon as he checked out, his pager went off for an
immediate surgery on level 4. His response to the call was quick, he did a fast pace walk over to
a small rectangle table that held tinfoil, silverware, and napkins as well. He wrapped his food in a
bright, shinny, and noisy tin foil; He then immediately placed his food in a small fridge nearest
to him.
When I sat down at a table with window behind me where I could see the lifeflight
helicopter, along with the ambulances. As I attempted to eat my overly cooked french toast sticks

to the point where they were no longer soft on the inside, there was a group of officers sitting
next to me. They were all having their daily discussion while eating breakfast, a lady in about her
late 50’s wearing black pants and a purple blouse; She asked the officers if the had a colleague
that was injured, their response was “no they were just here for a cheap breakfast and to have a
good time before they started out their day shift”. There was another family that was sitting on
my left hand sign who just had a newborn set of twins and lost one of them while giving birth.
The mother of the mom who had just gave birth to the twins believes it would be a good idea to
stay for her to stay home for a year to recover because she has a 5 year old daughter as well.
There was also one last family that sat two tables directly across from me. It was a son
and his father whose mom/wife was in the hospital for a cardiac issue. The mom/wife wanted to
get out early so she could go shopping at the mall but the two men thought it would be best for
her to stay an extra day in the hospital to recover since she suffered from a cardiac arrest. They
took that very seriously and didn’t want her to cause anymore damage to her heart and have her
come back.
After sitting inside the Intermountain cafeteria for almost 2 hours, I realized all the
different types of emotions and the energy that people express through emotions. People with be
celebrating with joy due to a newborn baby, others will be grieving because they had either just
lost a loved one or someone they love is in surgery and they are at risk with their life. The
hospital made me feel a lot of different emotions because with what the families were going
through, I experienced that in my life at one point and am still going through it. I know what it is
like to be celebrating with my family on having someone give birth to a baby, I know what it's

like to be grieving in sadness. Intermountain gave me a good opportunity to feel that and
experience it.
Hospitals have changed a tremendous amount within the last few centuries. They have
gone from not being super sterile, not knowing a whole lot when performing surgeries, having a
hard time contacting a nurse when they needed to be in an operation room, etc; Now hospitals
have pagers to contact nurses when they are needed, after every surgery the operating room is
sterilized, doctors and nurses now know what they must do when performing a surgery.
Intermountain hospital is one of the top and largest care taking centers in Utah and Idaho as well.
Everyday nurses and doctors are they to make sure every patient that is taken care of leaves with
outstanding treatment. MD’s make sure the patients health care goal is met and they leave the
hospital with a good experience and little to no harm. Intermountain does everything they can to
