Task
You will demonstrate your understanding of the similarities and differences between
characteristics of places at a local scale and represent data.
Instructions
Part A – Representing places: Represent the location of places and their characteristics on
maps and describe the location of places, and selected countries, using simple grid
references and cardinal compass points (Lesson 9 - 60 min).
o Lead pencils, coloured pencils
Part B – Representing and interpreting climate data: Represent data in tables and simple
graphs; and interpret geographical data to draw conclusions (Lesson 14 - 60 min).
o Blue coloured pencil
Part C – Interpreting data to identify similarities and differences: Identify and describe
the similarities and differences between places and describe the distribution of features of
places (Lesson 19 - 60 min).
o Coloured pencils
Conditions

Part A – Representing Places
Question 1: Representing location
Refer to Map 1: Australia and its Neighbours to complete the following:
a) Label the states of Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania.
b) Use a symbol or colour to identify:
• The Great Barrier Reef • Uluru
c) Record the colour or symbol used for the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru in the legend.
(An example of using a symbol would be the river in Map 1: Australia and its
Neighbours)
Question 2: Describing location using cardinal compass points
Refer to Map 1: Australia and its Neighbours and Table 1: Direction of travel between
locations. Record the direction of travel from the starting point to the end point, using the
cardinal compass points.
