Comprehension Strategy: Predicting!

What will happen NEXT?

What?
Predicting is when a reader
thinks about what might
happen next in a story.

When?
 BEFORE, DURING and sometimes AFTER reading.
 It allows the reader to think about what they already know
about a topic and make connections with the text.

How?
1. Look at pictures and words.
2. Use what you already know about the topic.
3. Think about what has already happened in the story.
4. Then ask the question, what will happen NEXT?
Ways to help your child at home!
1. Before Reading:
 Talk about what to look for in the story, picture clues, word clues and to
use what they already know to help them form a prediction.
 Take a picture walk through and think about what might happen in the
story.

2. During Reading:
 Encourage your child to make a prediction. If they need help, prompt
them with a question, “What will happen next?”
 Use the sentence starter, “My prediction is…”
 Talk about whether the predictions came true.
 Make new/change predictions.

3. After Reading:
 Have your child reflect on their predictions. Did they come true or not?
 Remind them it is okay if their predictions did not come true because
they are only a guess.
Always have your child explain how he/she made their
prediction. This will show you how they are learning! 
