‘Deciding How to Decide’: Even the Rich Need Advice on Budgeting
Jan 11, 2019.
Author’s Point of View:
1. What is the topic of the article?
2. What position/stance does the author take on this topic?
This article is about budgeting and how it should be done. Sullivan believes that you must
budget based on your needs and wants
Evidence:
1. What details/specific textual evidence does the author include to develop his/her position? (at
least two)
2. How do these TWO details/evidence develop the stance/position?
“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should spend freely”
It’s important to show control over your money. Meaning that one should not just buy whatever
they like because they feel like it. This causes the individual’s money to have control over them
instead of the individual being financially empowered.
“What should I be spending on”
The key word in the sentence above is “should”. This one word just nearly makes the entire
meaning of the sentence. It tells you to focus on your needs first because they overpower your
wants. By getting everything one needs out of the way they can moving on to buying items that
the want in moderation.
React: Is the position author took on this topic correct? Why or why not?
Use details/refer to evidence to support the point of view taken.
The position that Sullivan took on budgeting is correct. If ones budget was not separated by
needs or wants by asking themselves “what should I be spending on?” then families would go
without food for days but have things they do not need like a brand new phone. This method
allows people to understand what they are spending and why they are spending it.
