ABSTRACT

Needless to say, technology became the soul of the modern society and mobile phones

have caused this generation to enter a whole new world. This particular research aims to evaluate

and differentiate the impact of using mobile phones to teenagers in terms of their socialization

and communication skills. Subsequent to this, a questionnaire was randomly distributed to 50

male and 50 female respondents, aged 16-18 years old, and are currently living in the town of

Angono, Rizal. The result of the survey of 100 respondents was presented in the distribution

table and had analyzed in detail. It was interpreted that males and females have obviously

different effects when it comes to their interpersonal skills, while 16-18 years old is not enough

to tell their differences with regards to their interpersonal skills. An understanding of the effect

of mobile phones may give advice to all teenagers, parent and guardians, and also you that

excessive use of this might result to a complete total isolation or worse, suicide.

CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

These day and age, technology already took its large room in the modern society where as

a matter of fact, technology and human life cannot be separated; society has a cyclical

codependence on technology. We use technology; depend on technology in our daily life and our

needs and demands for technology keep on rising. Technically speaking, human used technology

to travel, to learn, to do businesses, to communicate and to live in comfort. However, technology

has also caused us concerns. Imagine what the soldiers back then thinks of when they sacrificed

themselves for our own land. The poor application of technology has caused us a serious threat to

our lives and society. The biggest challenge facing people is to determine the type of future we

need to have and then create relevant technologies which will simplify the way we do things. So

basically, it really became a large part of everyday experiences in life of every people in the

community. It is impossible to explore how each new advanced technology has impacted our lives

and how it will impact the future. Technology impacts the environment, people and the society as

a whole. The way we used technology determine if its impacts are positive to the society or

negative.

These technology became the heart and soul of the modern society, most especially when

it became more accessible as if it carries your whole life there. The best example of this is mobile

phones. As everyone knows, we are surrounded by the technology called cellular phones or
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 2
cellphones. Everywhere you look there is someone talking, playing a game, or browsing the

internet with their mobile phones. Even children are well-acquainted with the tools of the object.

Due to many facilities provided by the mobile phones nowadays, the abundant part of users

becomes sightless about the history and effects of this in the future.

Mobile phones have caused this generation to enter a whole new world --- the virtual

world. We are currently obsessed with the modern technology and often get lost with the reality

that we have. People today are fascinated by instant interactions, and instant way of getting

information to our relatives and loved ones, and are also constantly checking their phones for new

updates.

Mobile phones are also used in educational purposes. Some schools offer online education

in which you can study at home and does not require students to attend classes but still requires

students to have a session online. There, you will have your virtual school, teachers, and virtual

classmates and friends that will accompany you in your whole school year.

In addition to that, mobile phones are not just devices which are used worldwide mostly to

ease communication. It also enable users to access data, listen to music, play online and offline

games, send and receive simple text messages and etc. This is why young people or teenagers in

particular are the most attracted to the advantages of mobile phones. On the other hand, they are

also the most affected in the case of its disadvantages. Today, mobile phones have different

advance features that can easily fulfil the necessity of people that are using this modern technology.

But, mobile phones also have negative and bad effects, since everything there is just in the

tip of your own fingers. Some people use it for good but some abuse it. Since mobile phones have
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 3
a really big role in socialization and communication, it majorly affects the state of minds of

teenagers when it comes to socializing.

Mobile phones are also commonly involved in cybercrimes since mobile phones let

teenagers to communicate with strangers. As mobile phones get more advanced, it also allows

users to do crime in the internet as it is more capable of doing complex processes. And because of

those crimes, some teenagers suffer from psychological traumas on socializing.

As it is mentioned earlier that mobile phones grant teenagers easy access for

communication, teenagers now prefer to socialize virtually instead of socializing in the traditional

way. And because of that, it really has a big impact on how mobile phones affect the socialization

skills of teenagers. Socialization skills of teenagers are not trained because it is not frequently

practiced. As a result, they have low self-esteem on communicating face to face with different

faces and kinds of people. They will be having a hard time on socializing and even talking to their

close relatives. Imagine if their socialization skills are not practiced, they are going to have

difficulties in job interviews and public speaking.

Since mobile phones provide communication with those people far away from you, its

tendency is that you will always focus on those who are far away from you but not on those who

you are with. But do not get the point wrong, mobile phones still has the basic root of human

colonization, communication. Nowadays, mobile phones have the ability to connect people from

all over the world no matter where they may be. Not only that, they are accessible that it allows us

to talk to our loved ones daily.

Mobile phone is the most-widely used technology now in the 21st Century generation.

Before the current generation, the typical teenagers usually spend their time having fun with their
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 4
friends, doing outdoor activities and playing games, talking about nonsense things, and exploring

different stuffs that will satisfy their curiosity.

Nowadays, the things that a typical teenager would do are almost just the same as the

previous generations of teenager, but their activities involve a lot of usage of mobile phones.

Mobile phones will never disappear with their everyday activity. But why do teenagers uses mobile

phone often? In a simple conversation, it can be done without the use of mobile phone but why do

teenagers prefer using it?

Statement of the Problem

Significance of the Study

The research aims to determine the effects of the use of mobile phones in teenagers. People

who will be benefited in this study are listed below:

Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 6
 Teenagers – We all know that mobile phones connect students to one another. And also,

using mobile phones can be a potential host of distraction, and destruction to them. The

presence of mobile phones presents both opportunity and challenge for today’s generation.

So the study aims to give awareness to all teenagers and give an advice on how to use

mobile phones properly and moderately.

 Parents – Many parents and guardians argue that mobile phones keep their children safe.

How? For emergency purposes. But it is not. Students or teenagers are no longer safe while

using the mobile phones. This study also wanted to help and give them awareness for

guiding their children in using mobile phones.

 Schools and Universities – This will help them to determine the arising conflict of students

about cyberbullying and suicides and will make them to provide a solution of the said

conflict.

 Future researchers – Since the usage of technology is a contemporary issue and

continuously finds a solution that has been passed from generation to generation, the study

gives factual evidences that will help on acquiring and gathering data and facts.

Scope and Delimitations

The study will focus to determine the different effects of the use of mobile phone on

teenagers only in socialization and communication skills, disregarding their religion, other skills

and other things that are not necessary and inappropriate for the study. This won’t scope on how

do they engage, how the lifestyle before and now, and other data that will go further from the

study. Also this study didn’t include the presence of any other gadgets such as tablets, and laptops,

aside from mobile phones.

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-depth

search done. This will also present the conceptual, and theoretical framework to fully understand

the research to be done and lastly the definition of terms for better comprehension of study.

Review of Related Literature

“The Advantages of Teenagers Having Mobile Phones”

According to a 2008 study by the Pew Research Center, 75 per cent of teenagers ages 12 to 17

own a mobile phone and use that phone for daily communication through talking and text

messaging. Although mobile phones may be a distraction in schools, there are many advantages

to teenagers keeping and using their mobile phones--among them a number of educational and

informational smartphone applications and the ability to pinpoint a missing teenager's location via

GPS tracking.

Cell Phones as an Aid in Emergency Situations

One of the biggest advantages to a teenager having a mobile phone is the ability to

call an emergency service in case of an accident or a towing service in case of a tire blow-

out while driving. According to the 2008 study conducted by the Pew Research Center, 75

per cent of Americans claim to have used their mobile phones in emergency situations.

Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 9
Emergency agencies also support the use of mobile phones during an emergency by urging

people to add the letters ICE (for "in case of emergency") in front of certain names in their

mobile phone directory to designate who should be called in case of an emergency. Many

new phones also include GPS location technology, allowing parents to pinpoint the location

of their teens or to locate lost or stolen phones.

Cell Phones as a Means to Connect

Smartphones allow teenagers to keep in touch not only with their friends, but also

with family members, schools and emergency services. Facebook and other social media

applications allow for instant updates on a teenager's status, and mobile phones have

revolutionized long-distance communication by including long-distance calling options in

their service plans. The ability to send instant text messages is an added advantage, though

it should be avoided while driving. According to the Pew Research Center's 2008 study, an

estimated 88 per cent of teenage mobile phones users use their phones to connect through

text messaging.

Cell Phones as Wellness and Educational Tools

Smartphones enable teenagers and college students alike to download course

lectures, lesson plans and other applications designed to aid in education. Many

applications provide books in digital format, much like a Kindle, while other applications,

such as the USA Today or the New York Times app, condense every aspect of the print

Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 10
newspaper so it fits in the palm of a teenager's hand. In addition, a number of informational

and educational podcasts, as well as classes recorded in podcast format, are available for

instant download to most smartphones.

“The Mobile Phone Usage among Teens and Young Adults Impact of Invading Technology”

“The new digital environment presented an exceptional array of possibilities for

communication, interaction, and information retrieval at the fingertips that was never before

available”. It is a general understanding that mobile phones have fastened the society in various

aspects through its variety of functionalities. While cell phone expansion is at ‘breath-taking

speed’, SMS through cell phones is pervading ‘like a wild-fire’.

“Effects of Cell Phone on Interpersonal Communication of Teenagers”

The use of cell phone is increasing manifolds with every passing day. The most recent

report by Scarborough Research shows that national average penetration of cell phones in2003

was 66% a growth rate of over 30% since 1999, with even higher rates in larger cities. Those who

continue to avoid cell phone adoption tend to be older, more likely female, and will lower

education and household income than „haves‟. The cell phone has become a key technology in

regards to communication within the last ten years. Utilizing data from a three-year survey of 842

adults in the UK, found that cell phone penetration was higher than internet access for all age

groups, with those under 45 having the highest penetration of 80% by 2001. In a national survey

of cell phone owners conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, the Associated
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 11
Press, and AOL, results showed that 66% of U.S. adults own a cell phone, and it is estimated that

7-9% of U.S. adults are cell-only users. Additionally, Aoki and Downes found that one-third of

the 137 undergraduate students sampled in their study did not have a landline telephone and only

used the cell phone for calling purposes.

Time spent using cell phones appears to also be on the rise, but research has pointed out

the disparity between self-report measures of cell phone use and real-time observance of usage

levels. Although there were predictions of a small (9%) adoption rate among adults overall, the

trend seems to be growth in the adolescent (12-17) and younger adult (18 – 24) segments of the

market. The youth market – currently with a penetration rate of only 25%, but growing fast – is

considered a „gold mine‟ of opportunities to increase flagging industry profits. Even as mobile

phone penetration has increased in the USA, user demographics have changed. Women now

represent the majority of US cell phone users. The mean age and income level of cell phone users

has also declined over the years – contrary to research done earlier in the adoption cycle of the cell

phone and in other cultures. This may be a change in the trend of the adoption cycle as more recent

studies have shown that usage is growing in technologically and economically challenged regions

of the world, perhaps in part as a way to bridge previous communication gaps. The primary reason

for use appears to have shifted from business to personal communication. Some research has found

that this new mobile communication tool is reinforcing – rather than expanding – traditional roles

of women as nurturer and of a “weaker sex‟ that needs uses the cell phone as an additional means

of protection.

In addition to gender, age may have an impact on cell phone use. DeBallionand Rockwell

(2005) found that college students used the phone more than high-school students and adult non-

students. This result could be due to the fact that college students may be more dependent on the
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 12
cell phone for interacting with both old and new social networks acquired in the move to the

university setting. In looking at a sample of adults18 and over, Rainie and Keeter (2006) found

that 32% of the youngest cell phone users reported that they could not live without their cell phone

as opposed to only 18% of people over 30.

Thus, younger people exhibited a stronger emotional dependence on the cell phone than

older adults. Prepaid phone cards have made it even easier for adolescents and young adults to

obtain cell phone service, increasing the accessibility of cell phones to this demographic while

alleviating the concerns of parents that their children will use excessive amount of minutes

resulting in an extremely high bill at the end of the month. Limited adolescent finances appear to

have also resulted in their making strategic communication choices such as using “night time‟

minutes and “free‟ in - network calling. Teenagers and young adults use cell phones more than

their parents; it has been proved by research. They prefer to consider it their primary phone – in

lieu of the traditional Landline phone. Portability also translates into additional privacy since

personal calls can be made away from authority figures.

Use of Short Messaging Services (SMS) provides additional semi-private communication,

allowing users to stay secretly connected to social groups. SMS are often saved and even shared

in groups much like traditional letters. The relationship between age and cell phone dependency

could increase as cell phone use begins earlier in life.

In Finland, interviews with young people revealed that

cell phones become interesting to children around the ages of 10 and 12 due to the increased

importance of friend networks and activities outside of the home. If one begins exhibiting

dependence on a medium at such a young age, reliance on the medium may increase as one
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 13
matures. However, as demonstrated by Rainie and Keeter (2006), there may be a levelling effect

of dependency once a teenager enters into adulthood and the job market. As lives change during

the maturity process, so will the needs of the user in regards to social network maintenance and

reliance on the cell phone. With regards to the impact of cell phone use on social networks and

relationships, several studies have yielded interesting results.

Henderson (2002) found that text

messaging provided teens with a means of flirting as well as a mode to start or end romantic

relationships. This mediated form of interacting may have an impact on relational formation and

deterioration strategies, allowing those with less interpersonal or conflicts kill a private outlet for

communicating with significant others. Additionally,

young people can negotiate their relationships within the privacy of the home without parental

control (Henderson 2002).

Flirting can be accomplished right in the living room via text messaging without the prying

ears of siblings or parents. This places more control in the hands of the cell phone user with regards

to how and when interpersonal relationships are formed and maintained.

These characteristic usage patterns appear to be consistent across the variety of cultures in

which cell phone use has been studied to date. However, they must be framed within an

individual’s cultural context. In his qualitative and conceptual analysis of cell phone use by young

women in the UAE, has observed that the technology isolates young women from the greater

society while at the same time allowing young adults to speak more freely to one another than the

culture might otherwise allow. He believes that this leads to a separation

and individualization that has both a positive and negative affect on users and their families.
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 14
Found that US Latino citizens perceived the usefulness of communication technologies based upon

their community “cultural values.

Research has shown that usage patterns are constructed partially based on relationships

within social groups. Interviewed nearly 200 people and found 45 personal communication

networks. Within each of these communication “cells‟ perceptions of use and utility of mobile

phones was similar. These perceptions differed from small group to small group however.

Adolescent cell phone “haves” and “have-nots” sometimes mirror those of older demographics,

but in many cases the decision is made by a parent rather than a potential user. Young adult

ownership of a cell phone appears to be closely related to contact with one’s social peers.

Adolescents that do not have cell phones often feel cut off from their peers.

This invasion of private communication into public spaces has also led to an erosion of

boundaries regarding topics discussed in front of strangers.

Publicand private spheres merge as individuals walk down the street talking to close friends or

family on the cell phone – allowing strangers to easily overhear one side of conversations that used

to be considered private talk. In addition to observable interruptions of potential interpersonal

events – such as talking to someone on the cell phone while standing in line at the

bank – adolescents participate in concealed use of

the phone that interrupts or prevents interpersonal communication events – such as text

messaging someone while sitting in a classroom. Family concerns are also a reason for adopting

the cell phone.

When interviewing undergraduates regarding their attitudes and uses of the cell phone,

Campbell and Russo found that many students bought a cell phone because of the influence of

parents to maintain contact and for safety concerns. One interviewee remarked, “I didn’t really
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 15
need a mobile phone or want one, but my parents…got it formed…so they could call me, get a

hold of me”. Also in regards to the family, the cell phone may have adverse effects.

(Chelsey 2005) found that over a two-year period, cell phones were linked to distress and

decreases in family satisfaction due to work-to- family and family-to-work spill over. Being

available to both the work and family networks at all times caused increased stressing both

environments. Currently, several studies have examined how people use the

cell phone. For 10- and 11-year olds, Charlton et al. (2002) found that nearly half of the sample

reported using the phone to call parents, and approximately one-third of

calling behavior was to friends. The largest reason for why these youth used the phone was adesi

re to chat, followed by informing parents of where they were and to make arrangements to be

picked up (from school or activities, etc).

Cell phones are considered to be devices that free up people from constraints of landline

telephones – allowing one the flexibility of mobility, while still being able to access family,

friends, co-workers, and the services of the community. In fact, they are often considered time

saving devices since they allow users to more effectively manage limited available time. On the

other hand, cell phones are considered the bane of the 21st Century, preventing the user from being

able to get away from the office or avoid unwanted communication. This result, in the minds of

many “folk”, perceived loss of control over one’s life. It has been argued that the debate over cell

phones represents a greater struggle with changes in societal norms of communication and

interaction. In fact, Hopper 1992 has noted that the challenge of controlling access to one’s self

can directly affect innovation.

Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 16
Cell phone use, as well as the size and style of phone carried by a user, symbolizes a variety

of diverging meanings to different members of the public. It can represent safety, accessibility,

coolness of personal public image. Cultural and generational barriers exists some cases that

perceive this connectivity as negative.

Hence, mobile phones allowed teenagers to build their own image because of its access to

the social media. Those social media established the way of socialization of teenagers. Though

mobile phones greatly improved communication, face to face interactions are considered

especially by adults as the strongest type of communication.

“How Smart Phones Are Killing Conversation”

A Q&A with MIT professor Sherry Turkle about her new book, Reclaiming Conversation.

BY JILL SUTTIE | DECEMBER 7, 2015 Bookmark what happens when we become too

dependent on our mobile phones? According to MIT sociologist Sherry Turkle, author of the new

book Reclaiming Conversation, we lose our ability to have deeper, more spontaneous

conversations with others, changing the nature of our social interactions in alarming ways. Turkle

has spent the last 20 years studying the impacts of technology on how we behave alone and in

groups. Though initially excited by technology’s potential to transform society for the better, she

has become increasingly worried about how new technologies, cell phones in particular, are

eroding the social fabric of our communities. In her previous book, the bestselling Alone Together,

she articulated her fears that technology was making us feel more and more isolated, even as it

promised to make us more connected. Since that book came out in 2012, technology has become

even more ubiquitous and entwined with our modern existence. Reclaiming Conversation is
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 17
Turkle’s call to take a closer look at the social effects of cell phones and to re-sanctify the role of

conversation in our everyday lives in order to preserve our capacity for empathy, introspection,

creativity, and intimacy.

“How Have Cell Phones Impacted Teenagers’ Socialization” by mpett3

November 4, 2013 - 5:45pm Mobile phones have had a huge impact on how teenagers

socialize with both their peer groups and family members. This form of communication has

changed aspects of teenagers’ everyday social life by building their personal and group identities,

their social relationships and social networks, and allows for them to engage in intense social

interactions with members of their peer groups beyond parental control. In the research article

“The Impact of Mobile Use on Teenagers’ Socialization” the researchers did an experiment to see

how teenagers believed mobile phones impacted how they socialize. The researchers made a

questionnaire asking questions about their use of mobile communication. After the study was

conducted and the results were analysed, the researcher believes that it is pretty obvious that the

use of cell phones have increased social interactions among teenagers. With this being the first

empirical study of this topic, however, it is suggest by the researchers that more studies should be

conducted before any solid conclusions are made.

Cyber Bullying

Cyber bullying can occur at different age levels and in different geographical areas. For

example, a survey was conducted in 2004 involving 432 Grade 7 to 9 students from nine junior
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 18
high schools from middle-class, ethnically diverse communities in Calgary, Canada. The results

showed that more than two thirds of students have heard of cyber bullying incidents and about one

quarter had been cyber /bullied.

Cyber bullying can be devastating for victims and their families. The psychological harm

inflicted by cyber bullying, just like bullying, is reflected in low self-esteem, school failure, anger,

anxiety, depression, school avoidance, school violence, and suicide. It is even possible that the

damage from cyber bullying would be greater than bullying because there is no escape for the

victims; harmful material could be easily preserved as well as quickly and widely spread. Further,

many people who would not harass others face-to-face might cyber bully peers because they

believe that they could hide or it would be acceptable to engage in such behaviour virtually

Research studies have indicated that cyber bullying is becoming a major issue in schools and has

various negative effects. Nevertheless, it is not clear how students' beliefs and opinions affect their

behaviours online, whether as a cyber-bully, a cyber-victim, or a bystander. This study, therefore,

examines student opinions and beliefs in relation to their behaviours.

“The Impact of Mobile Phones on Teenagers Socialization and Emancipation”

The mobile phone has become an indispensable mean of communication, as according to

the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2013 there were almost as many mobile-

cellular subscriptions as people in the world. The device constitutes an important tool of

communication of individuals with diverse demographic traits but its critical role has been

emphasized specifically for teenagers who have adopted mobile phones with a surprising speed.

Teenagers’ proneness to adopt mobile phones is primarily associated with its functions including
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 19
instrumental (for instance, micro-coordination, accessibility and safety issues) as well as social

and expressive uses. With respect to the former, perhaps the most fundamental function is micro-

coordination that allows teenagers to plan and re-plan their social activities with parents and peers

providing both temporal and spatial flexibility. Similarly, accessibility contributes to a sense of

permanent availability; situation that has been described by Licoppe as “connected presence”.

The mobile phone may also act as a safety link in cases of actual emergency; hence security

reasons are critically important for both parents and teenagers to have mobile phones. For instance,

Oksman and Rautiainen underline that the device is characterized from parents “as a small

investment for the child’s safety”, whereas others advocate that the mobile phone acts as a “magic

helper” that aids parents to monitor teenagers’ location in order to guarantee their safety in

mobility, especially during the night.

Through the instrumental components of mobile phone communication, social and

expressive uses are accomplished as the device enhances social interactions and bonding with

those in teenagers’ intimate sphere. The mobile phone provides a direct communicative channel

between users and peer groups, parents and children; hence the device allows teenagers to develop

intensive interactions and reinforce their ties with their family and peers. However, the

instrumental and social functions of mobile phones are intertwined with critical impacts on

teenagers’ parental and peer group interactions. For instance, Pain et al. underline that:

Mobiles may reduce the fears of parents and young people by allowing contact which is

not spatially or temporally bounded. Mobile phones may expand young people’s geographies,

allowing them a wider spatial range unsupervised, and thus empower young people in reclaiming

public spaces, or contract them as a further means for parents to monitor and control young

people’s movements

“Mobile Phones and Teenagers: Impact, Consequences and Concerns-Parents/Caregivers”

The collective identity of a family or people living at the same place has been diluted

through the use of member’s individual mobile phones. In other words, unity has given way to a

multiplicity of channels. and hence, the identity of the family unit becomes less about ‘oneness’

and more about ‘many-ness’. The ability to quickly coordinate activities in a complex society is

probably the most significant contribution of the mobile telephone”. In addition to quick

communication, for a better understanding and a healthier relationship, a face-to-face interaction

is emphasized because especially adults consider this type of communication automatically

superior than other modes of communication.

It is obvious that mobile phones have fastened the society in different fields because of its

different functions. Mobile phone encompasses the different aspects in our daily life even if you

are with your friends or even staying in touch with the family. The mind-set of one family unit had

changed too, because mobile phones gave the people a way to acquire different ideas aside from

the one whole idea built by the family. It is also said that mobile phones kill conversation on mobile

phones especially in the field of communicating with others. When people become dependent on

their mobile phones, the preservation of our capacity for empathy, creativity, and intimacy is not

practiced.

The focus of the research is centered on how mobile phones affect teenagers:

 To gain an understanding of the respondent’s usage of mobile phones

 To determine how frequent does the respondents uses mobile phones

 To understand the effects on teenagers’ behavioral aspects

Theoretical Framework

Building off the concept that text messaging on a mobile phone is impersonal and more

people are communicating through this method, the social penetration theory of Altman and Taylor

Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 22
(1973) which is “the process of developing deeper intimacy with another person through mutual

self-disclosure and other forms of vulnerability”, would prove that starting a new relationship with

someone through social media and mobile phones could take a very long time, or perhaps never

develop. The Social Penetration Theory of Altman and Taylor (1973) also stated that, “the main

route to deep social penetration is through verbal self-disclosure.

For lifestyle of socialization, the survey of Yi-Fan Chen done in U.S. College shows that

students have several strong socialization motivates for using the mobile phone to contact both

family and friends (CHEN, 2007). Smartphone features, for examples, text to speech, GPS and

social Websites, people can easily remain integrated with society especially those with special

needs and elderly age (Sarwar and Soomro, 2013).

However, the report of Amanda (2012) shows that over dependent of smartphone brings

the impact of there is only 35% of the teens who owns a smart phone have face-to-face socializing

outside of school. According to Teoh (2011), Americans are socializing and spending the average

time of 2.7 hours per day on their mobile device. The time people used to socialize via mobile

device is twice of the time spending on eating and is more than one third of time spending on

sleeping per day.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the research and the study of the course undertaken and method that

will give detailed information of the overall researched method used. The relevance of the study

will be found also in this chapter wherein the data, respondents of the study, and the gathering

procedures used.

Research Design

The study used a quantitative research method. In research, quantitative research is

characterized by the use of statistical analysis. The objective of this research is to evaluate the

effects of certain issue, and furthermore, to be able to give suggestions and resolutions depending

on the effects whether negative or positive. The study will focus more on the effects of the use of

mobile phones on teenagers in Angono, Rizal. The study will prove that the use of mobile phones

have effects on students.

A survey was used to acquire data because it is best served to answer the questions and the

purpose of the study. Random sampling was chosen because it is not intended of the research to

choose a specific respondent for the questionnaire. The questionnaires and data gathered will be

used to evaluate and prove the effects of the use of mobile phones.

Research Locale

The origin of Angono Private High School can be traced back to the year 1953. It was the

first secondary school established in the town of Angono by the men and women behind Juan

Sumulong Memorial Schools System.

The first school building was the residence of the late Mr. Lope Aguinaldo. It had only 5

classrooms, 119 students and 8 teachers headed by Miss Remedios N. Reyes. The next years saw

the need for a bigger space to accommodate the increasing enrolees. Hence, the school was

transferred to its present site. It was in 1957 when the leadership was transferred to Miss Liwayway

G. Sanvictores as Principal of the school and in 1975 was promoted to the rank of the Director of

Juan Sumulong Memorial Schools System. For the next twenty-eight solid years, APHS

metamorphosed into a magnanimous institution under the very able hands of Mrs. Emelina B.

Medina-Ramos. The next five years saw its growth under the keen management of Mrs. Norma V.

Sanchez-Medina.

At present, the leadership is well-taken care of by Dr. Reynaldo D. Faustino. It has 1,011

students, 32 teachers, 14 classrooms with 2 air-conditioned computer rooms, a Science laboratory,

a Technology and Livelihood Education room, an Audio-Visual room and an air-conditioned

library.

The members of the Board of Trustees to continue their dedication and service to the

community added a new home for APHS. Located at Brgy. Pag-asa, Binangonan, Rizal, more

classrooms and facilities were built in this new site to cater to the needs of the students. And this

is where the researcher will gather all the data needed in the research.
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 26

In this research, 100 students, composed of male and female at age 16 to 18, from Angono

Private High School Department will be selected to be respondents in the research process. They

will fill up the survey papers given to them that shall serve as the basis for the research.

Data Gathering Method

The study gathered data using social media accounts for it will be able the work done easily,

and also, it is the most convenient way and this enabled the study easily contact the target

respondents. A survey was conducted and gathered through sending questionnaires with

Messenger. The population of the respondents is 100, composed of 50 females and 50 males with

the age no more no less 16-18 years old. All of the respondents are currently living in Angono,

Rizal. The respondents are teenagers because the research is going to be discussing about teenagers

and their usage of mobile phones. After the survey, the data was interpreted and analyzed obtained

from teenagers from Angono, Rizal.

Sampling Method

In order to select the respondent, the researcher used only Simple Random

Sampling. Meaning, there is no specific pattern to select respondents because it is not

intended to select a particular person to answer and complete the questionnaire. Through

this, each teenagers had an equal chance of being drawn in the sample.
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 27
Research Instrument

The research used survey questionnaire to gather data. The questionnaires were

designed based on the statement of the problem that has formulated. The questionnaire has

two sections. The first division was the respondents’ profile and then the second one is the

situational one. It was designed situational so the respondents may not notice the intention

of the study to determine the impact of the mobile phones to them. The survey will show

the respondents age, gender, and their view about the effects of the use of mobile phone.

The questions in the questionnaire are tested if they are relevant in the success of

the study as it will give conclusions and answers to the entire research.

Data Analysis Method

Now, the data for the research will be collected using a survey questionnaire. The survey

was comprised of 12 questions. A hundred questionnaire was made and randomly chose 100

respondents from Angono, Rizal. The surveys were given to the respondents 22nd of January, year

2019, and was returned at the same date. All the questionnaires to use in the research were

confirmed for a reason that all respondents completely fill-outed information written on the

questionnaire.

The data gathered will be used to evaluate the respondent’s composition. The evaluation

will be tabled according to the respondent’s age, gender, and strand that is evaluated will be

examined for more preferable result. The data will be interpreted and analyzed to how the

respondents affect them using the mobile phone.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Data analysis plays a very important role for achieving the objectives and in further helps

in enhancing the overall quality of research. This chapter describes the analysis of data followed

by a discussion of the research questions and findings. The findings relate to the research questions

that guided the study. Data were analyzed to identify, evaluate, and describe the effects of mobile

phones to teenagers in terms of their interpersonal skills. Data were obtained from the answers of

a hundred teenagers who were currently living in Angono, Rizal.

Data Presentation and Analysis

Descriptive statistical analysis was used to identify frequencies and percentages to answer

all of questions in the questionnaire.

Table 4.1: This table shows the numbers and percentage of male respondents who answered “A”

on the questionnaire. The mode is question number 7.

4.1 According to the results of the survey, the total average of male affected is about 50% and

above, meaning using of mobile phones has influenced male teenagers in their daily activity. The

questionnaire given is more on situational so that it may appears to the respondent not being chose

between “Which one do they prefer: Personal or Online’’. The letter A means you prefer online

and B is in personal. As you noticed on the table, question number 7, all of the male respondents

answered A which is choosing to talk to friends online rather than parents who are with them right

now. Surprisingly knowing that out of 50 male respondents, no one answered the second one.

4.2 Now, the female’s result is more intriguing than the male. The total average of female

affected falls between 30%-60% meaning that male is more affected than the female.

Considering male are more sociable than female, as you see at the result, most of them preferred

to choose personal than online. What’s more intriguing is the same as the males, there’s a certain

question where all 50 female respondents have the same thought.

4.3 This shows how teenagers didn’t realized that they are linking into virtual reality. Mobile

phone device has become one of the most common communication tools being used by both old

and young. And as you can see in question number 9 which asks if depression and motivational

posts affects them, around 84% are dealing with their own dilemma, and they are fortunate

enough if some motivational thoughts appear on the news feed of their social media account.

However, there are some unfortunates who have seen depression and suicidal thoughts and

trigger them more to do so. Mobile phones can be as dangerous as it could kill a lot of teenagers

who’s sensitive and cannot handle such things as they started to browse on their social media

accounts.

4.4 As shown in the table, the percentage didn’t go far to the previous one. There’s a lot of

similarities between the two ages. This reveals how time that used to be spent talking about each

other’s day has been replaced with constantly picking up our phone to respond to a chat or check

to see who like our status on Facebook, which explains the Question number 2.

4.5 The number of respondents agreed that they are affected by the mobile phones is similar with

the 17 year old respondents. We should admit that there is really something addictive about

scrolling on your news feed and much more. It’s all made teenagers into anti-social, sitting into

their own bedrooms, and forgetting the time of the day. We also known that this generation tend

to be much more linked into cyberworld, even though they want something personal and true.

4.6 This completely shows the overall average of the teenagers who answered letter A. As you

compare the three tables of ages is quite similar to each other. For some, it goes beyond habit-

mobile phones can become an actual addiction. It is true that mobile phone has enabled us to

connect in many ways, yet we must be careful not to let it replace real human interaction or keep

us distracted and isolated from loved ones in the same room

Data Interpretation

Discussion of Research Questions and Findings

(1.1) Age Ranges of the Respondents

Respondents were asked to answer the age category appropriate to them (see table 3.1

above). All the respondents responded to the question (100 responses or 100%) Forty-nine

percent of the respondents were 18 years old, thirty-four percent were 17 years old, and

seventeen percent were 16 years old.

(1.2) Genders of the Respondents

Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 37
It is also part of the purpose of the research to know the genders of the respondents. This is to

differentiate the effects of the mobile phones between male and female teenagers. The research

intended to select fifty male and fifty female respondents for the accuracy of the data.

(2.1) Effects of the Mobile Phones to Teenagers in terms of Age

In this study, the correlation between the ages was statistically significant. As mentioned

earlier in the Chapter III of this research, questionnaire was more of situational and it was found

out that ages 16-18 years old of this generation were not that totally linked on the virtual world.

Still, knowing that the question with the highest percentage was Question number 7, which all

about choosing friends (online) rather than parents (personal) suggested that teenagers isolates

themselves more to their relatives because mobile phones are existing and they this prefer more

rather than talking personal.

(2.2) Effects of the Mobile Phones to Teenagers in terms of Gender

Together with the ages, genders were also important in this research. Study reveals that male

teenagers have the high percentage linking to the mobile phones and so therefore, there is a

possibility that the one that isolates themselves to people around them is most likely male (see

table 4.1). Also, the shows that female respondents get easily affected with some motivational

and depression thoughts posted in every social media pages (see table 4.2). This concludes that it

might be the reason of the increasing rates of suicide and it is very alarming.

(3.1) Age Differences on the Effects of Mobile Phones to Teenagers

As the results were compared, the range of the ages is not enough to determine the

differences on the effects of mobile phones. The answers of those ages is quite similar, meaning
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 38
they are born in the same generation where reality and virtual world is not yet blended. This

range have the same experiences and way of living engaged with the mobile phones, however, it

doesn’t suggest that they all prefer to live in the virtual world which humans have created.

(3.2) Gender Differences on the Effects of Mobile Phones to Teenagers

Differentiating the data of male and female respondents, the study concluded that there

are significant differences in terms of gender. As mentioned earlier, it is also stated that male

tend to be more affected with regard to socialization and communication. Male respondents

aren’t expressive and this makes sense why they chose having a conversation online rather than

having a cup of coffee. On the other hand, female respondents have the low percentage of

engaging mobile phones, yet they admitted that they are affected with the posts of social media

pages.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations of

the study.

Summary of Findings

1. What is the respondents profile in terms of:

a. Age

The age of the respondents ranges from 16-18. To cover a large amount of data, the study

scoped teenagers from the whole town of Angono, Rizal. It was used to avoid shortage of data.

b. Gender

The genders of the respondents are male and female. It was shown that all of the respondents,

male and female, are using mobile phones. This will conclude that mobile phones have or may

have effects in students because they are using mobile phones.

2. What are the effects of the use of mobile phones on teenagers in terms of :

a. Age
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 40
Study concluded that there is really something addictive in scrolling and keeping in touch

with mobile phones. The majority of the teenagers would prefer to go sat in the corner and locked

their faces on the screens instead of having fun and bond with some people around them.

b. Gender

Since mobile phones made an ease in communication, male respondents used this to express

more themselves. However, this also might lead to an isolation to the real word but considering

the fact that this help males, it could be considered as positive. For the female is about motivational

and depression posts. They are get easily affected by those posts on the social media.

3. Are there differences in the effects of the use of mobile phones on teenagers in terms of :

a. Age

None. The scope of the ages is not enough to identify the differences between them.

According to the results of the study, teenagers of this generation have the same perception in

using mobile phones. They tend to choose the non-verbal way rather than the verbal.

b. Gender

There are differences between male and female respondents. Male respondents have the

high percentage of getting engaged in the mobile phones while females have the low percentage.

Conclusions

The following are the conclusions drawn the study.

This research concludes that teenagers of this generation, aged 16-18, have the same

experience and mindset on communicating and socializing. The majority of them would prefer
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 41
having a conversation online rather than personal. We did admit that mobile phones really made

an ease in communication but we are blinded by the fact that this device, instead of making

everyone of us more connected, mobile phones are making us more isolated. They are relying more

on their mobile phones for communication. It was concluded that 100% of female respondents

were affected by the social media posts. This factor might leads students from anxiety, depression,

and the worst case, suicide. In addition to that, male respondents tend to be more affected than

female. They have low interpersonal skills and that might be the reason why teenagers nowadays

have the low self-esteem and weak personalities.

Recommendations

The following are the suggestions offered for the future researchers, teenagers, parents, and

to everyone who are using mobile phones.

For the future researchers, it was recommended to have more focus and time management

to properly assess the information and facts included in the research in order for it to be clear and

vivid. It was also advised the future researchers to give a factual evidences that will help on

acquiring and gathering data and facts. All data gathered should always have a backup copy in

case of situations that could cause for the loss of data.

For the future researchers of this study, since the range of the ages is not enough to

determine the differences, it was recommended to have wider scope for the ages. Teenagers doesn’t

literally means “Teen” + “agers” but also this covers from age 12 to age 21. Another one is to

focus on the other skills that have not seen affected. This study may help you for conducting a new

one.
Effects of Mobile Phones on Socialization and
Communication Skills to Teenagers in Angono Rizal 42
For the subject of the research, the teenagers, it was strongly advised to have proper use

mobile phones with moderation to have a balance on socializing within the real world and the

virtual world. It was also recommend teenagers to have stronger communication and bonds with

their parents at home for them to be kept in touch with their son/daughter's behavior for them to

notice if there's something wrong going on

And lastly, this study aims to remind everyone that although a thing such as mobile phones

could have many positive and helpful benefits, when such a thing is used excessively and

obsessively, it could turn into the negative side.
