neural network
Saker Ammar, M.Sc. in power systems, Tishreen University, Lattakia, Syria

Voltage stability is among the most important studies in modern power systems, in which voltage stability
assessment is responsible for offline/online evaluation of the ability of a power system to maintain
acceptable voltages at all buses in the system under normal conditions and after being subjected to a
disturbance. These studies have become more necessary for modern power systems since such systems are
operated near to its steady state limits with stressed conditions. Also, some important features associated
with voltage stability use in power system have discussed. Line Stability index is used for estimation of the
maximum load ability and in other words index is used to recognize the weak bus in electrical power system.
As a major contribution, in this thesis, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are used for voltage stability
assessment or to confirm secure and insecure mode of the power system. The input data of neural network
are yield from the Newton-Raphson (NR) load flow analysis in the platform of MATLAB R2010b. The
result obtained from the N-R method also validates through Feed-Forward Back Propagation (FFBP) Layer
Recurrent (LR) and Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN) in terms of accuracy to foresee the status of
the power system. The effectiveness of the analyzed methods is validated through IEEE-30 test system,
using Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI). The results have verified the superiority of the proposed
technique and its accuracy.
The main findings in this thesis are: i) an index, FVSI, for the load buses in power system is calculated to
predict the health of the power system. Prediction of FVSI is carried out by FFBP, LR and RBFN
topologies. We find out the load ability in offline N-R method and ANN topologies by varying real and
reactive loads and designed an efficient neural network; ii)The main advantage of proposed method is that
it indicates a good agreement between target data (NR) and RBFN output for given IEEE standards.
Prediction accuracy of RBFN is better and higher than other topology; and iii) the propounded approach
bestows fast computation of voltage stability index FVSI. Operator can examine any random and unknown
load patterns by using the approach of supervised learning.
The Thesis is organized as follows. An introduction with comprehensive literature survey is introduced in
Chapter 1. An overview of voltage stability topic and methods is given in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 gives a
focus on the power flow techniques. Artificial neural networks and the proposed techniques are studied in
Chapter 4. The results of the proposed voltage stability assessment using ANN is introduced in Chapter 5.
Chapter 6 concludes and gives future research directions.
