Research Paper Reflection

My junior research paper was about why America should be more conservative. I was

inspired to write about this topic because of two things. Because my teacher told me it was a

good topic to cover. As I was the only person in the class in the class with a more conservative

point of view, my teacher said it would be a great topic since it is very argumentative. Also

because when I was doing research for my paper, I saw how conservatives were being portrayed

in the media and that further fueled my ambitions to further do research on this topic. But some

of my other classmates weren’t so on board with my topic. My classmates would see me as

“racist” for supporting the same ideals that President Trump had. Some weren’t even shy about

telling me that because when I was discussing my topic to some of my friends, a girl spoke up

and call me racist for supporting the ideals that harmed her family. I could see why she was upset

since she was hispanic and her father was deported under Trump, but I was trying to explain

myself. I was trying to tell her that just because I support some of his policies, it doesn’t mean

that I support him. But she talked over me, not letting me explain myself and I had to deal with it

since I was trying to be respectful. After that experience, I would talk about my topic so often in

fear of people thinking bad of me. And that stuck with me all the way through senior year when I

would have friends who I liked having around asked me about my topic. I would just tell them

that it was political because I didn’t want to lose them because they thought opposite of what I

thought of, they were liberal and I was moderate who leaned towards conservatism more and I

knew if I told them, I would risk losing them. What I learned from this research paper was that

there is a lot of injustice in the world and when people want to resolve them, if your not part of
the majority people don't want to hear it. So when you hear in the news that conservatives don’t

want to fix America’s issue, read more into that because they are but the media doesn't want to

show it because they want to keep portraying that conservatives are the bad guys. What I would

do differently would be to be to find more articles about this and to find more evidence of it.
