month, the number of unemployed fell by 0.6 percent to 872 thousand and the number of
employed persons remained unchanged at 3.83 million. Unemployment Rate in Greece averaged
16.24 percent from 1998 until 2019, reaching an all time high of 27.80 percent in July of 2013
and a record low of 7.30 percent in May of 2008.

Greek Jobless Rate Drops to 18.5% in February

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Greece edged down to 18.5 percent in February
2019 from an upwardly revised 18.6 percent in the prior month.

Compared with the previous month, the number of unemployed fell by 0.6 percent to 872 thousand
and the number of employed persons was unchanged at 3.83 million.

A year ago, the jobless rate was recorded at 20.6 percent. The number of unemployed persons
decreased by 10.3 percent while employment rose by 2.4 percent.

Unemployment declined for almost all age groups but young people aged 15-24 years (38.8 percent
from 46.0 percent) and the 25-34 age group (25.4 percent from 25.3 percent) still struggle to find work.
Lower rates were mostly observed in the 35-44 age group (16.2 percent from 18.8 percent); the 45-
54 age group (14.7 percent from 16.5 percent); the 55-64 age group (14.3 percent from 17.0 percent)
and the 65-74 age group (11.4 percent from 11.5 percent).

By genders, the jobless rate was lower for men (14.8 percent from 16.4 percent) than for women (23.3
percent from 26.0 percent).

Across the country's regions, the lowest unemployment rates were registered in Crete (16.8 percent),
Attica (18.1 percent) and Aegean Islands (18.2 percent). In contrast, Epirus-Western Macedonia
registered the highest rate (21.6 percent).
