Activity: Self-Advocacy

Learning Objective(s):
1. Students will develop the skills to seek assistance when necessary
Materials:
1. Pencil and paper
Lesson Outline/Procedure: Include each of your learning activities
1. Review strengths and weaknesses from the lesson on Confidence Building
2. Have students define what the term “self-awareness” means to them
3. Ask students to complete two lists
• Things I can do without help
• Things I need help with
4. Discuss with students how they learned to do the things they can do without help
5. Read scenario: “Alex just got a pair of glasses to help her see far away. However, she is still getting used to them and feels she needs to sit in the
front of the classroom. One day Alex came to school and her teacher had switched her seat to the back of the classroom. She decided to stay after
class to talk to her teacher about moving her seat to the front of the classroom, so she can see better.”
6. Discuss with students:
• Why it is important that Alex talk to her teacher about changing seats
• Did she do the right thing?
• Have you ever been in a situation where you need to self-advocate?
• Was it easy or difficult to ask? Why?
• How did sticking up for yourself help you?
7. Have students discuss self-advocacy in groups
8. Discuss as a class examples of when we can self-advocate
9. Next have students partner up and create a story about someone who has to advocate for themselves.
• Have volunteers share with class
Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?
Process Data: Take attendance and keep track of how long the lesson takes
Perception Data: Students complete a survey at the end of the lesson listing 3 ways they can self-advocate.
Outcome Data: Teacher feedback on the development of self-advocacy skills with increasing independence.
Plan for Next Lesson/ Follow Up: Meet individually with students that might be reluctant to self-advocate.
