Lesson 7
Latching Assembly
Objectives Upon successful completion of this lesson, you will be able to:
Use Assembly Motion to simulate the closing of the latch at the
desired speed.
» Use COSMOSMotion to simulate and analyze the amount of force
necessary to close the latch

The objective of this lesson, analyzing a latching mechanism, is to use
expressions prescribing the displacement of the mechanism and
extraction of the contact force generated as the latch closes.
Open Full Latch Mechanism. sidasm.
Create a new Motion study.
Click on Insert, then select New Motion Study.
Create a rotary motor to drive the latch.
In the Motion Manager, click on the Motor icon,
Under Motor Type inthe Motor 5 ER
Manager, select Rotary Motor. vw «

Under Motor Direction, in the
Components/Direction field,
select the axis as shown in the
following figure.
To do this, it may be necessary to set the axes to Visible in the View
pull down menu,
Under Motor Type, in the Motion field, select Expression (see the
figure above),
Under Expression Type, in the Motion field, select Displacement.
In the Expression box, type:
STEP(TIME,0,00,1,90D)+STEP(TIME,1.5,00,3,-90D)

Note ‘The first part of the expression prescribes a 90 degree rotation between
O and 1 second. The second part then rotates the lever by 90 degrees in
he opposite direction between 1.5 to 3 seconds.
Click OK.
Functional You can use functional expressions to define magnitudes of input used
Expressions in:
» Motion drivers
Applied forces
Functions can depend on time or other system states, such as
displacement, velocity, and reaction forces and may be composed of
any valid combination of simple constants, operators, parameters. and
available supported solver functions such as Step (STEP) and
Harmonic (SHF), for example. For a detailed list of functions and its
syntax, please refer to the on-line help.
Define motor to restrict rotation of the latch.
Create a Rotary Motor that sets Distance to 0 deg from 0s to 3s at the
location shown below.
