The Effect of the Concentration of Water on the Reaction of a Catalase in
Hydrogen Peroxide
Research Question: What is the
effect of the concentration of
water on the reaction of catalase in
H202? In Research objective: We are
going to test the effect of the
concentration of water on the
reaction of catalase in H202
Hypotheses
1. As the concentration of water
increases, the time taken for catalase
to react will decrease.
2. Alternate: As the concentration of
water increases, the time taken for the
catalase paper to react will increase.
3. Null: The concentration of water will
not affect the time taken for the
catalase to react.
Background
We have never done an experiment
involving catalase. Our body produces an
enzyme that speeds up breakdown of
hydrogen peroxide. Catalase is the enzyme
that speeds up the breakdown of H202.
Enzymes are a particular class of protein.
They speed up chemical reaction in our
bodies without being affected. In our
experiment we tried to figure out the effect
of the concentration of water on the
reaction of catalase on H202. For our
experiment we had done three trials for our
three treatments. We also calculated the
mean, variance, and standard deviation for
all three treatments.

Results
Conclusion
- Our second hypothesis was correct;
as the measure of water increased,
the time taken for the paper to rise
increased.
- There were some tests that were
drastically different from the rest of
the tests, making the means seem
strange.
- If there had not been the one
outlier, the results would have been
quite different.
Future Directions
If we were to do this experiment
again, we would control the
temperature of the water and
measure the reaction time of the
catalase in unaltered hydrogen
peroxide.
