Featuring Clinician Curt Pate
“It cost nothing to ask wise advice from a good friend.”
-George S, Clason

A little over a year ago I reached out to Curt Pate and asked him if he
would be interested in coming to the ranch to put on a clinic for our
boys and their colts. I had never had the pleasure of meeting Curt but
had watched a clinic of his once before. I also found the book he put
together with Western Horseman very helpful in teaching our young
men about horsemanship.

At the time, I knew that I was asking one of the greater minds of the
livestock world to come and impart
wisdom to a horsemanship hungry
group of young boys and staff. What I did not realize is that, at length, I
was actually asking a favor and advice from one who was to become a very
good friend. Curt agreed to come and be apart of our production sale and
horsemanship clinic and what is more is that he would not even think about
allowing us to pay him a dime. He said, “The horse world has given me so
much, I want to give back to it.”

When Curt Pate first arrived on the ranch, we were all so excited to meet
him. I found him to be very unassuming and easy to talk to. He immediate-
ly sought out our boys who swarmed him in a buzz of excitement. One of
our boys even expressed his disappointment in me for wearing a straw hat
when I introduced myself to this master of horsemanship. Curt did every-
thing along side our boys. He walked with them, talked with them, and
even more admirably listened to them. He sat with them at meal times and
sweated with them working with their colts. Quite simply, he befriended
the boys of the Agapé Ranch.

This year, we have had the absolute privilege to meet his wonderful wife, Tam-
my. Tammy is the founder of Art of the Cowgirl and has experienced great suc-
cess in this venture. She came here on a visit with Curt in March and took time
to get to know our boys and our program. She spent an afternoon teaching us
some fundamental truths of good horsemanship. When Mrs. Pate said good bye
to our boys, I noticed tears in her eyes. Again, I realized what genuinely good
friends we have found in the Pates.

Agapé Ranch is very blessed to have been

befriended by Curt and Tammy Pate. They
will be joining us again this year for our sale.
Curt will be putting on a clinic that will be
free to the public viewers. During this clinic he will be teaching our
boys and their horses. The spectators are welcome to participate with
question and comments (no outside horses).
This clinic will also act as an opportunity to showcase and preview the
colts that our boys have been working and are now selling in our Ride
Prosperously Production Sale.
Testimonies of Some of the Boys

Evans and Bruiser – Hip #20

1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

“This has been my life verse and it means a lot to me. I have been through a lot of things and this verse
always comes to my mind. I love to think that I can cast all my cares upon the Lord because he cares for
me. I also want Bruiser to know that I care and want the best for him and that he can cast all his cares,
worries, and fears on me because I care for him.
Bruiser has taught me a lot about relationships. When I first got here, I really did not have a relationship
with my parents but since I started with Bruiser that has changed a lot. How do I expect Bruiser to listen
to me when I can’t even listen to my parents? How do I expect Bruiser to want to be with me if I don’t
even want to be with my parents? I love Bruiser, and I know he loves me.”

Leo and Bucky – Hip #18

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let
them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the
cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

“This verse means that God gave us the privilege to have rule over the animals of this
earth, like horses. It also means that we need to take care of them and to use them wise-
ly. Also to teach them in accordance to how God teaches us.
My horse is like my best friend. I love training him. He is practically a mirror image of
me. He is like that friend you will never get tired of. In a sense, he is teaching me, too.
He means the world to me. One of the main things I have learned in colt class is that
when things go wrong, like getting bucked off, to always try again. Another is that God
is in control and that He will put you and your horse through trials so that you can push
through them and strive for success. Whenever you are working, put everything you have
into it.”

Jordan and Jewel – Hip #4

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and puri-
fy your hearts, ye double minded.

“I believe that if you take a step of faith just to try to get closer to God, I believe that He will take a
step closer to you.
Imagine that you and your horse are in the round pen. You represent God and the horse represents a
sinner that is new to the Christian life. And he does not want to be with you but with the other horses.
What do you do? I like to try to get the horse’s attention on me and off the others. And when that
happens, and the horse figures out that I am not trying to hurt it but to help it, the horse will want to
be with me and start drawing near to me and I start drawing near to my horse. “
Jeremy and Roach – Hip #16
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth,
give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

‘Peace I leave with you…’ “My intentions were to train Roach to become a ranch
horse. I did not want him to become wide-eyed and tensed up when I was around. I
wanted him to be able to trust me.” ‘…my peace I give unto you…’ “I wasn’t the only
one trying to get something to trust me. God was trying to get me to trust Him.” ‘…not
as the world giveth, give I unto you.’ “Being the trainer, I used servant leadership to
train. Over time, roach learned that being with me offered him security. It was hard,
though, because he always wanted to veer toward the other horses. To make a great
horse, the horse has to learn to stand alone. To become a great man, the man needs to
stand alone. Whether in the round-pen or the arena of life, there is always a trainer. In
the round-pen, I am the trainer, but in life, God is the trainer.”

Daniel and Kryptonite – Hip #12

Romans 7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

“I’ve learned so much in colt class. My horse has taught me so much. It just seems
like every time I am trying to teach him or accomplish something with him that there
is always something that prevents me from being able to teach him everything he
needs to know. But one thing that always helps me get through this is repeating the
Bible verse, Philippians 4:13.”
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Kyle and Remmy – Hip #6

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love,
and of a sound mind.

“One thing that my horse has taught me is how to be a leader. When my horse is
scared and not confident about something, God gives me the spirit of power, love, and
a sound mind to push her through it and help her get over it. I also see this in my
relationships with people and with Him. He helps me conquer my fears and face my
problems

Dalton and Reba – Hip #15

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

“This Bible verse helps me and lives in my heart every day.

God has shown me many lessons with my horse that benefit me in life. Listening to Mr. Olson
has helped me not get hurt on my horse, but all in all, God is the one which protects me and
gives me the courage to get on my horse every day. I know He is there for me and will protect
me. “
The Ride Prosperously Equine Booster
Production Sale
We call it the “Ride Prosperously Production Sale” because our program is
designed to utilize the kinship a boy is able to find with a young horse as an
opening to instill Biblical principles that will enable him to “ride prosperously”
through life. It is also our desire to raise and start good ranch colts that will
help you “ride prosperously” on the ranch, in the arena, or on the trail.

Asa is a really nice bay gelding that is going to be pretty big. His mother is my favorite mare and I believe that he has a lot of potential
as a ranch horse. He is pretty laid back and tends to take all things in stride. We have roped cattle on him and he does great with tarps
and crossing water. This is a very gentle gelding. You might have to ‘peddle’ him a little to keep him going but he is willing to go
where he is pointed.
Bryan has gotten along really well with this colt and during is time training this young gelding, Bryan actually graduated the program
and was hired on as a staff member on the ranch. I am just as excited about this colt’s future as I am about Bryan’s.

This is a big young bay roan mare. Betsy started out being quite a handful but has proven to have a willingness to learn. She still shies
from things periodically but it has been pretty easy to get her over those obstacles. Betsy has been assigned to three different boys dur-
ing her time in training and has done a good job getting used to the different riders. She crosses water very well and is used to tarps and
ropes. She has drug logs and has been started roping live cattle.
JT came to Agape with absolutely no experience. He loves having ‘his’ horse and learning how to train her. His quiet nature and calm
demeanor lend to the success of the training of both he and his horse.

This is young horse that we did not raise. However, Max has been with us since the start. This is a well bred colorful young gelding. Max is going to
be a pretty good size horse. He has really good bone and foot. This young gelding has been a little hard headed at times but has never offered to buck.
He is friendly and has a quiet disposition. We have swung ropes on Max and have had tarps all over him. He crosses water just fine and rarely ever
spooks. He can be a little hard in the face but in the right hands, will realize a softer mouth.
Russo is originally from Columbia. He had about as much experience with horses as he did with the English language. Russo has been one of our
more eager listeners and puts into practice the things he has been taught. I have noticed that his desire to learn how to train has translated into a desire
to learn how to make better decisions for his future.

tarps, water, and anything else he might see. This gelding’s odd color is actually a roaned out dun.
Ryan came to us all the way from Ireland and has a background riding and showing hunters under saddle. Timex has been faithfully teaching Ryan the
finer points of western riding. Ryan is doing a fine job on Times and it has been just as much fun to see an English rider convert to western as it has
been to watch a disrespectful teenager convert to a respectable young man.

Hank was born here in 2013. We had to wean Hank when he was only three months old because his mother had gotten

years with lots of supplements and dewormers. He turned the corner but always seemed to be too far behind to catch up.
We gave Hank to a young man named Ryder as a project. Ryder and his family took great care of Hank. Once Hank start-
ed to grow and put on weight, they sent him to a trainer. Hank is doing great now. He looks good, he rides good, and he is
ready to go on to bigger things. Hank has a beautiful mane and tail and a rare splash of roaning over his shoulder and on
his hip. He was never registered but I have papers on both his sire and dam. Hank got a late start in life but he is now do-

Paco is a horse that was not raised here on the ranch. Actually we have had Paco for only a few months. He has had less work put in to
him than any other colt in our sale but the work that has been done has been thorough and complete. We originally picked up Paco from
the Spinks Ranch in Jericho Springs, MO as a horse to give another student an opportunity to participate in our class. However, we
wound up having one of our other horses open up and Paco became a project of our ranch hands. Paco has been used for demonstrations
and learning illustrations. Mr. Jordan Hadley has taken great care of Paco over the last couple of months and he has progressed rapidly.
Paco is a son of Bluestem Vaquero and has a very quiet and athletic disposition. This colt has been started handling ropes on live cattle.
Tim Mulloy Benefit Auction
The first day that Tim started working for us, we were branding calves. I remember watching as a
man that was right handed now roped left handed because he just had all four of his fingers
recently removed from his right hand. As I watched I realized that the man that had come to work
for us was the real deal. He handled the rope with ease in his left hand as though his body and
mind were so used to the work he was doing that any limb of his body could easily pick up where
another had left off. His mind always seemed to be thinking the right direction and his eyes never
missed a thing. The horse we had put Tim on that day seemed to enjoy having such a high level
of experience at the helm. Tim worked smoothly, efficiently, and quietly. A smile never ceased
to trim his face: he was definitely in his element. I did not know Tim well at that time, but I
learned much about him by the way he handled his rope and his horse. Later, as I got to know
Tim, I learned that he had a tremendous amount of experience in the
cowboy world. Working for some of the bigger and more famous outfits, Tim learned from
the best and stayed with it long enough to teach some of the best.

Somewhere along the way of Tim’s cowboy journey, he met Jesus Christ. His clear
compelling testimony of salvation is riveting and convicting. Tim loves the Lord and has
trusted the Lord’s will no matter the trial of life he found himself facing.

Tim is an overcomer. He endured many hardships growing up and

has since had to bear trials in life that few have ever experienced. I
will never pretend to know why God has allowed Tim to go
through all that he has but one thing I do know is that Tim is an
inspiration to our boys here on the ranch. I have witnessed these boys scrutinize Tim’s
situation only to come to the conclusion that they too can overcome adversity in their own
lives. I have heard Tim give testimony of how good God has been to him encouraging the
young men around him to never give up on the one true and living God. I have shed tears as
Tim’s influence has brought lost boys to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Tim is a very
talented man but perhaps his greatest ability is his ability to never
give up.

Since Tim’s start here on the Agape Boys’ Ranch, he has undergone a dozen amputations/
surgeries. He has had to re-teach himself to do simple everyday things so often that he has
made a science of doing so. Tim has now lost his right arm, both legs, and a thumb and
pinky on his left hand. He is determined to come back to work and get back on a horse to
ride with our boys. We are determined to do all we can to get him back to work. There are
many health obstacles Tim still must face and overcome; however, there are many
financial obstacles through which he must also navigate.

We would like you to join with us in helping Tim by praying for his health issues and
giving toward his mounting financial needs. We are doing this in three different ways.
We will have a small amount of tack for sale during the horse sale
that we built here at the ranch. All the proceeds from those sales will go to Tim. Also, we have
chosen two of our better un-started two year old colts to be auctioned off as a benefit for Tim.

There will be a filly and a gelding. We will auction these off as “choice.” There will be one
auction and the winner will have choice of either the filly or the gelding. We will retain the colt
not chosen and it will go back into our training pen. The buyer of this colt is invited to bring
him/her back to be consigned at our future sales. All proceeds from the auctioned off colt will
go to Tim and his needs. The third opportunity for you to partner with us in giving to Tim is
simply through donation. We will have a place in our bidder’s office to give donations of any
size. Thank you for being a part of our objective to help my dear friend, Tim Mulloy.

This is definitely the biggest and likely most athletic filly we are offering at our sale. Sonya is a beautiful red dun mare with solid bone and
good feet. She has done very well in her training and in some ways shows the most promise of the three year-olds rode by our students. This is
not a horse that would do well sitting for a while. She is ready to go and become something. She had a scare early on with the tarps and we
have had to work diligently getting her over that. She is still hesitant to walk over it but she will. I expect this mare to accomplish big things in
her future. We have drug logs and roped the dummy on her and will have roped cattle on her by the sale.
This is the second year that Kutter has ridden a colt for us. His first colt was petty easy but he has had his hands full with this one. He has done
a tremendous job stepping up to the challenge. He has learned to push past fear and frustration and has become one of our better hands.

Last year, Ted Thoreson and his family of the Thoreson Ranch in El Dorado Springs, MO decided that they wanted to donate their
breeding program to our program here at the Agape Boys Ranch. This gray gelding, along with hip number 20 (Bruiser), are products of
their breeding program. When we got Galaxy, he was already started. He is really athletic and is fun to ride. Galaxy can be a very sen-
sitive horse and has bucked on occasion. He really relies on guidance from his rider. He is a little older than our colts and has a lot of go
but is very controllable. This is a stout gelding and ready to go to the roping pen. We have roped cattle on him and he handles ropes
pretty well.
Manuel is another returning student to our horse program. He really likes working outside on the ranch and hopes to pursue a career
with horses and cattle. Manuel has learned to push himself out of his comfort zone to accomplish bigger things with Galaxy.

When Reba was a yearling, she got into wire and cut her right hind leg pretty bad. After lots of stitches, prayer, hydrotherapy, and rest
this red roan filly has totally healed, although she still carries a scar on that leg. She is a granddaughter of World Champion Calf Roping
Horse Zans Last Light. Reba is extremely athletic and fast. I believe that she has the ability to compete in the calf roping world. She
will watch a cow and is good with tarps and water. We have drug logs on her and have started her roping live cattle.
Dalton matured a lot while riding this filly. Dalton realized that he had to learn to listen or he was going to get hurt. This filly was just
too athletic to not pay attention. He did listen and has really done a nice job riding this little mare. She rides quietly and correctly.

Grade

This little smutty buckskin gelding was given his name due to the brand he carries. He is a grade three year-old gelding that has a
“roach” freeze branded on his left hip. We did not raise this horse but got him when he was a yearling. We were told that he came from
a man that raised roping horses. Roach is a pretty gentle colt that shows a lot of athleticism and ability. He is stout built but will always
be a little short. He is really good with tarps, ropes, and water. He has drug logs and been ridden all over. His mouth is currently a little
hard, but no doubt can easily be restored in the right hands. Roach does not seem to spook at much of anything and moves out pretty
nicely.
Jeremy hit a few rough patches when starting Roach. It took him a little while to figure out a few of the basic things. However, once he
got things going, he really made some big steps. Jeremy tries harder than most students but had to learn to read the horse and to wait on
the horse. These two have certainly been good for each other.

Leah was one of the nicer horses for the boys to start. She was actually started by the boy that rode our high-selling colt at last year’s
sale. That boy was able to finish our program and go back to be with his family and is doing well. This bay filly with a little chrome
then went on to be ridden by a handful of different boys until she found her spot in the hands of the young man riding her through this
year’s sale. She does very well with tarps, ropes, and whatever else one might ask her to handle. There is very little that she refuses to
do. Her mouth is also a little hard but she ahs the propensity to soften up and respond well in more experienced hands.
Tevin is always smiling and I tend to think that makes his horse smile. He is a good kid that has a desire to do the right thing. I have
been pleased with the progress Tevin has made as a horseman and young man.

Bucky is our “special” horse. Bucky was born and raised here on the ranch and early on we noticed something was
slightly different. Bucky had a pretty bad overbite! His mother does not; his father does not; but Bucky does.
Originally, I had decided not to put him in the sale and I told the boy that started him that he could keep riding him but
he would not be able to ride him in the sale. I gave the young man the option of switching to a different horse so that
he could ride in the sale but the young man refused and said he did not want to quit on Bucky. This young man has
been working so hard and has been so committed to his horse that I just could not refuse him the opportunity to con-
clude his course by riding his horse through our sale. Bucky is actually a really nice dun gelding that is going to be a
nice size horse. He shows a little cow sense and does well with ropes and tarps. Despite his over-bite, has never had a
problem holding his weight in pasture. He has good feet and bone.
Leo is the young man that would not give up on his horse. He and Bucky have come along way together. This
relationship reminds me to thank God for not giving up on me.

If you like short-coupled agile horses, Lizzy is a mare for you. This little buckskin mare is really a nice compact easy moving filly. She
can be a little grouchy at times but she has a lot of try. She is good with ropes, tarps, and water. Wee have roped live cattle on her and
she will dig in and pull. She is good with her feet and has good feet. She does have a scar on her left hind leg but she is 100% sound in
every way. She can be a little kicky to other horses when she is in heat, but is always willing to go to work and get something done.
Richard came to us with no experience and has had his hands full with this horse. I have been impressed with his try and willingness to
keep on keeping on. He was given a challenge and rose to the occasion. All in all he has done a very good job with Lizzy.

Here is another nice gelding from the Thoreson Ranch bloodlines. Bruiser is a good solid well built chestnut gelding that wants to work
for a living. He likes cows and is stout enough to handle the work. He is good with tarps and water and he has been exposed to ropes.
This colt is very athletic. He is good with his feet and has great conformation. Being a little older than the young colts, his maturity
level has lent to quick learning.
Evans is the kind of young man that makes everyone smile. He works hard and loves to ride. I am certainly pleased with the progress
both Evans and Bruiser have made together. Both possess the aptitude to succeed.

Catnip may be just a small plain sorrel filly, but she has good bloodlines and a lot of future. This little mare is starting to show some cow
sense and is really starting to become a nice horse. We did not raise this horse; she is one that we picked up to supplement the number of
boys interested in our horse program. This filly can be a little horse sour and probably struggles with that more than the rest of our colts.
That being said, with a little persuasion, she will ride off alone and behaver herself. Catnip has been exposed to tarps, ropes, and water.
She is pretty laid back and doesn’t spook at much.
Matthew has really learned a great deal about life from this horse. He has learned the importance of standing on his own and not needing
to go with the crowd. Matthew grows everyday and I could not be happier with the steps he has taken in life and in class.
Notes
Notes
What Should I Expect From An Agape Horse?
(at time of sale)
 A horse that is healthy and sound
 A horse that is used to being tied at a hitching rail
 A horse that leads well
 A horse that stands to be saddled
 A horse that stands to be mounted
 A horse that loads well in a trailer
 A horse that is not barn sour or spoiled
 A horse that walks, trots, lopes, stops, and turns left and right
 A horse that is respectful
 A horse that has been and can be shod all the way around
 A horse that crosses water
 A horse that has been exposed to cattle and ranch work
 A horse that has been exposed to ropes and tarps
 A horse that has been through the “hard part” of training
 A horse that has been ridden more “outside” than in an arena or round-pen.
 A horse that has been fairly and honestly represented

What Should I Not Expect From An Agape Horse?

(at time of sale)
 A horse that is kid-broke (even though it was broke by a kid)
 A horse that is bomb proof (though our colts may seem gentler than most, no colt should be considered
bomb proof)
 A horse that is finished (These colt still need to be ridden consistently)
 A horse that is professionally trained
 A horse that lopes perfect circles
 A horse that always takes the correct lead
 A horse that makes no mistakes
 A horse that would be a good choice for a beginner (These colts should not be ridden by a novice)
 A horse that can sit idle for a long period of time and maintain its training

What are the Three Worst Traits That I Might Expect to Experience With
My Agape Horse?
 A hard mouth—Our boys have a tendency to be heavy handed as they are learning. The colts will soften
up in the right hands.
 Wrong leads—We don’t lope a lot of circles here, mostly because the boys have a hard time recognizing
the wrong lead.
 A desire to be with other horses—We often must ride out in groups; nonetheless, the horses will ride off
alone without much trouble.
Thank you for your support!
Ride Prosperously!
