LESSON PLAN IN DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION

Semester: Second
Core Subject: Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction
Lesson: Concept of Disaster
Date: November 15, 2017
Time Allotment: 70 minutes
Grade: Grade 12
Section/s and Time: St. Augustine (9:45am – 10:55 am)
St. Elizabeth (10:55am – 12:05 pm) MWF

CONTENT STANDARD: The students will have an understanding of the Concept of disaster
and Concept of disaster risk.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learners relate the concept of disaster with daily life.

I. Learning Competencies
By the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
Explain the meaning of disaster;
Differentiate the risk factors underlying disasters;
Describe the effects of disasters on one’s life;
Explain how and when an event becomes a disaster.

II. Subject Matter


Topic: Basic Concept of Disaster and Disaster Risk
Materials: Laptop, TV, PowerPoint Presentation, Manila Paper and Marker

ACTIVITY
This will be a group activity:
1. The learners will be grouped into 5.
2. Each group will prepare a KWL Chart. Regarding the concepts about Disaster and
Disaster Risk.
3. Two representatives from each group will present their outputs.

ANALYSIS
The teacher will ask the following questions based on the students’ activity:
1. How did you find the activity?
2. Based on what you know, what do you mean by disaster risk?
3. Are they destructive? Why? Why not?
4. How do these disasters affects the lives of the people?

ABSTRACTION
Discussion on Concept of Disaster and Disaster Risk.

Generalization
1. What is a disaster risk?
2. What is the difference between disaster and disaster risk?
3. What are the different types of disaster?
4. How do disaster affects the people?
5. Explain the affected components of disaster.

APPLICATION
The learners shall complete the last part of the KWL Chart which is the “What have I learned”
part.

IV. Assessment
Paper and Pencil Test
Answer the following questions in not less than seven sentences.
1. What is a disaster risk? Is it important to study the disaster risk and the acceptable risk in
your area? Why? Why not?
2. Is there a way to prevent the occurrence of disaster? If yes, cite examples.
3. As a student, how are you going to help for the betterment of our environment?

V. Assignment
Research about the nature of disaster.
