WW1 began in 1914 and ended in 1918. This war involved two main groups.

The groups were called Allies and The

Central Powers. There were 17 millions deaths and 20 million wounded. It was one of the most deadliest problems
ever to occur. The three things that caused WWI is Militarism, Alliances, and Imperialism. The one that did is
Nationalism.
Militarism is when a country starts to build up a army to become a stronger nation. This could cause other countries
to do the same thing because a country from another group can cause other countries to be nervous by their
surroundings. In document eight it states “... we realize that without power, without a strong army and a strong navy,
there can be no welfare for us.” This means that being weak can cause another country to beat another. A country
without a army or navy’s protection will loose a war and their country will be in danger. Great Britain had a strong
army that’s why countries would not defeat them because they were afraid of loosing. In document seven it shows
how strong some navy’s were in different years. In the beginning of WW1 in 1914 Great Britain had the strongest
navy and army then there was Russia. Great Britain always was the strongest so that country had no chance in
loosing to another. This would make other countries nervous so that would make people want to build their navy and
army’s up and become stronger so if any country was to encounter any country they would actually have a chance in
beating another nation. This proves that Militarism caused WW1 because other countries were building their army’s
and navy’s up from being afraid of another’s army and the protection other countries had for themselves incase of
any defensive cause.
Alliance is when a group comes together and becomes partners. This caused WW1 because countries came
together and promised each other that if any country tries to defeat who that country is partners with they will help. In
document four it states “If France is attacked by Germany, or by Italy supported by Germany, Russia shall employ all
her available forces to attack Germany.” This means that that France and Russia are allies. Whenever a country
wants to encounter another the country that they are partners with will help. France and Russia were allies and if
anyone was to hurt any country that is allies with another country they would help that country out. In document nine
it states “ So that by 1914 about a quarter of all French foreign investments were in Russia. This means that since
France and Russia were allies they felt like if one had the other had to have too. They wanted a piece of each foreign
weapons so that the countries could be prepared. This proves that alliances caused WW1 because if one country
come encounter with another that country would help.
Imperialism is when a stronger nation takes over a weaker nation. This could cause other countries to want power.
France and Britain had colonies in Africa and Asia. This made Germany and Italy want to build their own empire up.
Those countries wanted power and other places where they could gather more resources. In document one it shows
the costs of the powers. This shows all of the money the countries were getting from having power. In document
three it shows the sizes of the colonial empires. Basically this shows the resources that other countries took/had from
taking over a weaker nation. This proves that Imperialism caused WW1 because if a country took over another the
other countries would want to have the same powers.
Nationalism is when a country has pride in itself. Every country wanted to be above but if you need to be allies with
another country how could you have pride in ones self? Even though some countries such as Italy thought that their
country was fair and without blame , other countries felt like they needed a allies help. They needed allies to fight
their battles because they felt like that’s what they needed. Nobody had pride but one country. Italy. That’s why in the
political cartoon that was shown Italy was the only country that wa not pointing fingers. That proves that Nationalism
did not cause WW1 . Italy’s country felt that their country was fair and without blame.
These are the different causes of WW1. Militarism , Alliances and Imperialism. This proves how these causes
caused WW1. Also with evidence on how they caused it.
