NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
NetBackup enables companies to deploy a data protection solution with both the flexibility and scalability required to backup
and recover the data, servers, and applications for midsized to extremely large companies. A typical NetBackup architecture
consists of several components: clients, agents, servers, and options. Clients and agents are typically installed on the systems
to be protected. NetBackup media servers instruct the clients to perform backups and direct data to target storage (appliance,
disk, tape, or cloud). All of this is controlled by a NetBackup master server within a single NetBackup storage domain.
Key Features
One platform, one console unifies virtual and physical global data protection.
Unified global management of snapshots, replicated snapshots, backup, and recovery.
Backup and appliance integrated, scalable global dedupe across virtual and physical.
V-Ray one pass backup, instant image and single file restore for virtual and physical.
Automated virtual data protection and load balanced backup performance.
Key Benefits
Unified enterprise-class virtual and physical data protection eliminates point products, offers better visibility, leverages
resources, and reduces cost, complexity, and risk when virtualizing mission-critical applications.
V-Ray lets you search and recover a single file from an image backup in minutes instead of a manual mount, search,
and restore that can take hours, even days.
Simplified management and faster recovery of snapshots and replicated snapshots from anywhere in the backup
environment.
Always on protection of new, moved, or cloned VMs eliminates uncertainty and overloading of hosts during backups.
NetBackup intelligent deduplication reduces storage costs with dedupe rates as high as 98% while optimizing backup
performance and resources with flexible “end-to-end” deployment options.
Architecture
From a purchasing and licensing perspective, NetBackup has four major component areas: clients, agents, servers, and
options.
Clients–are placed on the systems to be protected for data storage and retrieval actions to and from the NetBackup
servers.
Agents–client-based components installed or turned on with a license key that integrate the client with specific
applications (e.g. Oracle, SQL, SharePoint, Exchange, etc.) allowing application-consistent backups.
Servers–act as master or media servers and instruct clients to perform backups and direct data to the target storage
(appliance, disk, tape, or cloud).

4
NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
Options–components installed or turned on with a license key that enable various optional features (deduplication,
Accelerator, OpenStorage, NDMP, tape drive sharing, OpsCenter Analytics, etc.).
A Graphical representation of a 3-tier NetBackup architecture is below. A 2-tier architecture will have the master server also
functioning as a media server.
Licensing Summary
VERITAS currently offers customers two licensing models to purchase NetBackup: Platform Base, or the Capacity model, and
the Traditional model. Customers may choose between licensing models, but cannot mix and match license models within the
same NetBackup domain.
Note that some options available in the Traditional licensing model are licensed per front-end terabyte. While this is a capacity-
based meter, this is different than the Platform Base model, which is a bundled offering where every piece of the solution is on
the front-end terabyte meter.

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
The Platform Base model is beneficial to customers who currently have, or plan to deploy, advanced features of NetBackup
such as Enterprise Client (V-Ray, SAN Client, etc.), Data Protection Optimization (Intelligent Deduplication, Accelerator, OST
(including cloud connectors, AIR), Replication Director, OpsCenter Analytics, or Application and Database Packs. The
Platform Base licensing model includes most but not all NetBackup features and products. NetBackup Media Server
Encryption Option (MSEO), Desktop and Laptop Option (DLO), and Self Service (NSS) are not included in the Platform Base
licensing model and must be licensed separately. For this reason, customers can purchase MSEO, DLO, and Self Service
within a domain that is licensed through the Platform Base licensing model.
The Platform Base licensing model supports customers with multiple locations within the same domain, and customers with
multiple domains as long as the total number of protected front-end terabytes is licensed. Customers with multiple domains
also have the option of using different licensing models in each respective domain, but customers are not allowed to utilize
both the Platform Base licensing model and the Traditional licensing model within the same domain.
The Platform Base licensing model has three editions: Complete, NDMP, and Limited. The Complete and NDMP editions can

be used together in the same domain. However, neither the Complete Edition nor the NDMP Edition can be used in the same
domain as the Limited Edition.
Platform Base Licensing Benefits
Deployment for optimal performance – with the entitlement to NetBackup limited only to or primarily by the amount for
front end terabytes, customers can deploy the optimal configuration and architecture.
Unlimited copies – since back-end data is not metered, any number of backup copies can be created, duplicated, or
replicated without incurring additional software license cost.
Disaster Recovery (DR) hot sites – NetBackup infrastructure at a DR warm or hot site can be kept up and running
without incurring additional license cost, as long as the infrastructure is only used to restore data protected under
Platform Base licensing.
More economical way to obtain advanced features (e.g. Enterprise Client, Data Protection Optimization, Replication
Director).
Simplified licensing compliance – easier to understand, track, chargeback, and comply with thus reducing cost of
acquisition and license management.
Cloud infrastructure – in cases where physical infrastructure characteristics (e.g. # of CPUs, SAN interconnects) are
not measurable and therefore cannot be easily licensed using infrastructure-metered licensing, capacity-based
metering provides a simpler alternative.
Easily understood value – when offering Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS), licensing based on amount of data protected
provides a simpler way to communicate value that a non-technical person can appreciate without having to explain
the technology or give customers a choice between features they may not understand or appreciate.
Customers must purchase using the appropriate banded SKU. The appropriate SKU contains the customer’s total terabytes
purchased within the SKU’s banding. The customer then purchases X quantity of the appropriate SKU, where X represents the
total number of terabytes being purchased. The customer’s total historical terabytes purchased is not included when choosing
the correct band, only terabytes being purchased in the current transaction.

Notes:
The Complete and NDMP editions can be used together in the same domain. However, neither the Complete Edition
nor the NDMP Edition can be used in the same domain as the Limited Edition.
Please refer to an active price list for terabyte tiers/bands
Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO), Desktop Laptop (DLO), and Self Service (NSS) are not included in the
NetBackup Platform per Terabyte licensing model.
The NDMP Edition licensing also includes the Replication Director feature for the protection of NAS filers using snapshots and
replication though storage system integration. The NDMP Edition only supports NDMP policy-based protection of filers as well
as the use of the NDMP data mover in storage lifecycle policies. Customers requiring the flexibility of configuring Standard,
Windows, or application policies in addition to NDMP policies require an upgrade to the NetBackup Platform Base – Complete
Edition.
Accelerator for NDMP is included as part of the Platform Base – NDMP Edition. However, other NetBackup Accelerator
workloads are not supported with the NDMP Edition. The use of other NetBackup Accelerator workloads (e.g. VMWare, files &
folders, etc.) requires the NetBackup Platform Base – Complete Edition.
The Platform Base – NDMP Edition is only available for front-end terabytes that are protected using NDMP and may not be
used for any other purpose. The NDMP Edition includes the following NetBackup features and products as a part of the
licensing.
Server Replication Director Library Based Tape Drive
Enterprise Server NDMP Option OpsCenter Analytics
Data Protection Shared Storage Option
Optimization Option Vault Option

nor the NDMP Edition can be used in the same domain as the Limited Edition.
Please refer to an active price list for terabyte tiers/bands
Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO), Desktop Laptop (DLO), and Self Service (NSS) are not included in the
NetBackup Platform per Terabyte licensing model.
Notes:
The method for calculating front-end terabytes for the Limited Edition is the same as the Complete Edition or NDMP
edition.
The Limited Edition is not recommended for large, complex environments as it is for customers with less than 250
front-end terabytes and is restricted to Windows, Linux and Solaris x86 systems installed in the environment.
This package is not recommended for customers close to 250 front-end terabytes as a customer must upgrade all
licenses to the Complete Edition and/or the NDMP Edition once the total NetBackup environment grows above 250
TB’s (i.e. total number of FETB’s across all NetBackup domains). For example, if in Domain A, a customer was using
the Traditional license model to back up 200TB’s and the customer was using Platform Base Limited in Domain B to
backup 51TB’s then the customer would need to upgrade Domain B from Platform Base Limited to Complete
because the total amount of source data across both domains is greater than 250TB’s (200 + 51 = 251).
The 250TB restriction for the Platform Base Limited Edition applies to the legal entity or entities for which the license
has been granted. For example, if Parent Co. XYZ has Subsidiary A and Subsidiary B and Subsidiary A purchased
the license(s) then, by default, Subsidiary A and Subsidiary A alone receives the license entitlement. In this scenario,
the 250TB restriction applies only to Subsidiary A because Subsidiary A is the only entity authorized to use the
license. This scenario, where the purchasing legal entity is given the license(s) authorization, is the standard
entitlement scenario. However, if special authorization has been granted to use license(s) across multiple legal
entities then the 250TB restriction would apply across all licensed entities. For example, if Parent Co. XYZ and its two
subsidiaries were granted special authorization to use licenses across the three legal entities than the 250TB
restriction would be calculated by taking the sum of all TB’s backed up across all domains across all three legal
entities.
The Platform Base Limited Edition cannot be combined with the Platform Base Complete or Platform Base NDMP
Editions within the same NetBackup domain.
Please refer to an active price list for terabyte tiers/bands

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO), Desktop Laptop (DLO), and Self Service (NSS) are not included in the
NetBackup Platform per Terabyte licensing model.
IMPORTANT: The Limited Edition Application and Database Add-on IS NOT licensed the same way as the App & Database
Pack on the Traditional license model. The App & Database Pack on the Traditional model is licensed Per Tiered Physical
Server. The Application and Database Add-on on the Platform Base – Limited Edition is licensed per NetBackup application
agent/instance (i.e. the installed NetBackup application component) and not per physical host.
One Application and Database Add-on license is required for each installed NetBackup application component of the following
databases and applications:
Microsoft SQL Server Oracle Sybase
Microsoft Exchange IBM DB2 SAP
Server IBM Lotus Notes
Microsoft SharePoint Informix
Microsoft AD
Notes:
A Limited Edition Application and Database Add-on license is licensed differently than the App & Database Pack on
the Traditional license model (i.e. it is not licensed per physical machine). It is licensed per installed NetBackup
application agent/instance (i.e. installed NetBackup application component) regardless of whether the agent/instance
is installed in a physical or virtual environment. For example, if a customer has 1 physical server and 5 VM’s with 1
VM using the SQL NetBackup application component and another VM using the Exchange application component
than 2 Application Add-on licenses would be required for that one physical server.
An Application and Database Add-on license is required for each installed NetBackup application component
regardless of server role. For example, each SharePoint front-end web server with a NetBackup SharePoint
application component installed requires a license.
The Enterprise Vault agent is included in the NetBackup Platform Base Limited Edition capacity license so an
Application and Database Add-on is not needed to obtain this functionality.

number of front-end terabytes backed up exceeds the number of front-end terabytes licensed; in this case the customer is out
of compliance and must purchase additional front end terabyte licenses. The NetBackup Platform Base license must be
purchased for all front-end terabytes in the NetBackup domain.
The Platform Base – Complete Edition and the Platform Base – NDMP Edition can be utilized within the same domain or
across multiple domains, as long as the total number of front-end terabytes is licensed separately for each Edition, but again,
cannot mix the Platform Base licensing model and the Traditional licensing model within the same domain.
Notes:
The calculated number of protected front-end terabytes is measured using a 90-day reporting window. For a given

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
client, the largest aggregate full (or synthetic full) backup performed within any 24-hour period during the reporting
window is the calculated capacity, even if the data has been subsequently deleted.
Database archive log backups do not increase the calculated size of the largest full database backup as long as log
backups occur on different days from full database backups. If log backups are performed within the same 24-hour
period as a full database backup, the total licensed capacity will equal the sum of database and log backups.
The quantity of pre-deduplicated data protected is used in the FETB calculation.
Archived data is included in the front-end terabyte calculation if the archived data is protected by NetBackup. If
archived data is not protected by NetBackup it is not included in the front-end terabyte calculation.
Data that is moved to another server and then immediately deleted from the original server may appear twice in
NBDeployUtil reports for a period of time. Only data from the new server location should be counted when
determining license quantity. Deleted data from the original server location should disappear from NBDeployUtil
reports once the 90-day reporting window is exceeded.
OpsCenter includes a license deployment report which may be used to monitor and maintain capacity compliance.
If a server is protected by multiple Master Servers, a license is required for each Master Server Domain.

NetBackup Clients
Any server that sends or receives data to a NetBackup server for protection requires a NetBackup client license. If a server is
protected by multiple Master Servers, a license is required for each Master Server Domain. There are two types of NetBackup
client licenses: Standard Client and Enterprise Client.
The NetBackup Standard Client is used to protect LAN-based systems. The Standard
Standard Client
Client includes Bare Metal Restore and Client Encryption capabilities.
The NetBackup Enterprise Client contains the functionality of the Standard Client plus
advanced features that provide special integration with hypervisors (e.g. VMware,
Enterprise Client
Hyper-V), maximize backup performance over a storage area network (SAN), and
reduce the impact of backups through off-host backups.
Standard Client
The NetBackup Standard Client license is the economical option used to protect servers. A “server” provides services to more

than one user and is considered a group or company resource controlled by a system administrator, Information Technology
organization, or similar.
This license entitles customers to protect a server with a standard NetBackup client (LAN-based backup). A “standard client”
license also entitles customers to use either Bare Metal Restore or NetBackup Client Encryption capabilities.
Note: Bare Metal Restore and NetBackup Client Encryption cannot be used together.
Notes:
Major platforms supported by the Standard Client include Windows, UNIX, Linux, Solaris x86, OpenVMS, Mac OS X,
NetWare and Free BSD. For specific platforms and versions, refer to the NetBackup OS Compatibility Guide for more
information.
For specific BMR platform support information, refer to the BMR compatibility page.
NetBackup client support for Red Hat Linux and SUSE Linux on IBM’s zSeries is licensed per virtual machine.
Open File Support–No additional licenses or costs are required to protect files while open or in use.
Enterprise Client
The NetBackup Enterprise Client license allows customers to use the complete range of advanced data protection features in
addition to the functionality of the Standard Client. The NetBackup Enterprise Client is licensed per physical server (on a tier
basis) and is ideal for providing high performance, low impact protection, especially for virtual machine hosts. Features
include:
Advanced VMware vSphere Features (V-Ray) – Agentless backup of virtual machines, granular file and application
recovery, vCloud integration, Instant Recovery for VMware, VMware vStorage related features such as block-level
incremental and off-host backups, as well as Accelerator for VMware (also requires Data Protection Optimization).
Advanced Microsoft Hyper-V Features (V-Ray) – Agentless backup of virtual machines, granular file recovery, off-
host backup.
Client-based snapshot (host or array) for file systems, applications, or databases via NetBackup Snapshot Client.
SAN-connected backups via SAN Media Server or SAN Client.
Notes:
The NetBackup Enterprise Client must be used with NetBackup Enterprise Server and cannot be used with
NetBackup Server.
Refer to the NetBackup Server Tier Matrix in order to select the correct server tier.

15
NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
For a list of supported platforms, operating systems, and snapshot methods that Snapshot Client supports for certain
backup methods, refer to the NetBackup OS Compatibility Guide.
NetBackup Enterprise Client SAN Media Server should not be used to backup data from networked Clients. In order
to backup data from networked Clients and remote Clients to the SAN attached tape resources, a full NetBackup
Enterprise Server license is required.
If two NetBackup Master Servers (i.e. two separate NetBackup domains) protect a single client, two client licenses
are required, one for each domain. Additionally, if two NetBackup Master Servers are installed on a single server, two
licenses are required, one for each domain.
NetBackup Agents
In addition to clients, certain applications and databases can benefit from NetBackup agents that provide additional integration
at a deeper level, enabling more reliable, application-consistent recovery. These agents are optional but highly recommended.
One Application and Database Pack is required for each physical host regardless of what types or how many instances. For
example, a single server requiring agent support for both Exchange and SharePoint would require one (1) Application and
Database Pack.
Enterprise Vault - An Application and Database Pack license is not required for customers using NetBackup 7.6+. Existing
NetBackup customers can obtain this functionality by requesting a new license key for NetBackup Server or NetBackup
Enterprise Server from Customer Care. A Standard or Enterprise Client is still required.
Microsoft SharePoint - If SharePoint is deployed on a single, standalone machine, only one (1) license is required. Otherwise,
for a multi-server farm, consider the following for counting licenses required:
One (1) license covers all front-end web servers, including load-balanced web servers.
One (1) license is needed for each SQL Server.
One (1) license is needed for each Index Server.
Do not exceed one (1) license per machine.
Microsoft Exchange

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
If the Exchange server performs a mailbox role a license is required, regardless of the other roles it may perform.
If the Exchange server only performs a CAS role then a license is not required. The license key for an Exchange
server performing a mailbox role can be used on this server.
A license is not required on an Exchange Edge Server or on an Exchange Hub Server, as these servers do not store
data.
Notes:
Refer to Application and Database Agent Compatibility List for a list of all supported database and applications across
platforms.
Refer to the NetBackup Server Tier Matrix in order to select the correct server tier.
SAP
This agent allows customers to protect SAP environments, including SAP HANA. Integration with the SAPDBA administrative
interface, along with the BR backup and recovery commands, provides a solid, SAP NetWeaver-centric data protection
solution for customer specific configurations on the UNIX, Windows, and Linux platforms.
Notes:

Some applications are sensitive to clustering and thus need additional qualification. Agent support doesn’t imply
agent support for a clustered version of the application.
NetBackup Servers
There are two server licensing components: NetBackup Enterprise Server and NetBackup Server. NetBackup Enterprise
Server includes the complete set of features while NetBackup Server provides a limited feature set. The clients, agents, and
options are designed to work with both versions of NetBackup except for the NetBackup Enterprise Client, which is only
functional with NetBackup Enterprise Server.
Organizations that decide later to access more advanced features can easily upgrade to NetBackup Enterprise Server. New
functionality is enabled by license key and doesn’t require any additional application upgrades.
Server
Designed to be a more economical data protection solution for midsize environments, NetBackup Server is licensed per
NetBackup domain. A NetBackup Server domain supports one backup server protecting multiple clients and NDMP NAS

systems. Not all agents and options are supported with NetBackup Server (see previous section).
Notes:
Refer to the NetBackup Server Tier Matrix in order to select the correct server tier.
For smaller customers (small- to mid-market) interested NetBackup Server on no greater than a Tier-2 type server,
NetBackup Starter Packs are available. Please refer to the respective Pricing and Licensing guide section for more
information.
Enterprise Server
Enterprise Server contains the code for both the Master and Media Server. NetBackup Master and Media Server pricing is
based on the tier of the machine. The tier of the machine is determined by the number of installed processors on the physical
machine.
Notes:
Refer to the NetBackup Server Tier Matrix in order to select the correct server tier.
Cluster Environments - NetBackup licenses (servers, clients, agents, and options) are required for all nodes of a cluster.
However, customers are entitled to install and use one additional copy of the licensed software per the conditions set forth in
the Cold Disaster Recovery Licensing Policy. In most cases, this means that in an active-passive cluster only the active node
is licensed. During a failover situation the licenses effectively transfer to the new active node.
The Master/Media Server in a NetBackup Server (two-tier) configuration is only supported in a clustered environment on
Windows and using Veritas Cluster Server or Microsoft Cluster Server. In this case only one NetBackup Server license is
required for the active node. However, NetBackup clients, agents, and options that are attached to a NetBackup Server are
supported in a clustered environment using the same clustering combinations supported with NetBackup Enterprise Server.
Refer to the NetBackup Cluster Compatibility List for a complete list of all NetBackup supported clustering products.

Disk-Based Options
Basic Disk Functionality (free)
Basic disk backup in NetBackup is available at no additional charge and does not require an additional license. Basic disk
backup can be used for backing up to a basic disk storage unit or for temporary staging of data before writing it to tape. Please
take note that Storage Lifecycle Policies cannot be used with basic disk.
Exception: Backups to any storage target that performs deduplication requires Data Protection Optimization Option licensed
for the total number of front-end terabytes being protected.
Enterprise Disk Option – Includes Storage Life Cycle Policies, Media Server Load Balancing, Virtual Tape, and OpenStorage
connectivity (including cloud storage).
Intelligent Deduplication – Includes both client and target based deduplication features.
Accelerator – Requires sending backups to a disk pool that supports NetBackup Optimized Synthetics technology. A
NetBackup intelligent deduplication pool, NetBackup Cloud-store pool or compatible OpenStorage pool is required, which is
included with the Data Protection Optimization license.
OpenStorage (OST) – Enables advanced access and control of qualified third-party intelligent disk devices (typically
appliances). Hardware appliance vendors provide a software OST “plug-in” that conforms to the NetBackup OpenStorage API
and enables communication between NetBackup and the vendor device. These must be qualified by Veritas to be supported.
The exact functionality offered by each vendor will vary based on what they have written into their OST plug-in.
OST integration also enables NetBackup to utilize cloud storage offered by various cloud service providers such as Amazon,
Rackspace, and AT&T. The cloud storage plug-in is installed on the NetBackup media server that connects to the cloud
storage solution. An example of functionality provided by the OpenStorage feature is the integration with NetBackup through a
popular feature called OpenStorage Optimized Duplication (Op-Dupe). With OpenStorage Optimized Duplication, NetBackup
is able to manage and control the duplication of backups written to an OST device using the intelligent device’s native
replication capabilities. Data moves directly between OST devices under NetBackup control. The NetBackup catalog remains
aware of both the primary and remote backups stored on the OST devices. Backup retentions are maintained through the
normal backup lifecycle process.
OpenStorage also supports Optimized Synthetics, which is required for Accelerator. Check with the specific vendor to verify
this feature is supported with their OST plug-in.

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
Please check the Hardware Compatibility List for the latest list of storage partners with qualified OpenStorage plug-ins.
Auto Image Replication (AIR) – AIR is a part of the Storage Lifecycle Policies feature and requires the Data Protection
Optimization Option license for both the source and target domains.
Customers, under the Traditional licensing policy, are required to purchase the applicable infrastructure licenses for the master
and media servers in the source and target domains for using Auto Image Replication. Licensing for the target domain is
required even if that domain is a dedicated Disaster Recovery domain. This is because the target domain master and media
servers must be active at all times and are not in “idle” mode as mandated by the Cold Disaster Recovery policy.
Data Protection Optimization Option licensing is based on front-end terabytes, so there is no additional cost for DPOO licenses
at the target domain, however all other infrastructure licenses including servers, library tape drives, and shared storage option
are required at the target domain.
Note: If the Auto Image Replication target domain is a dedicated Disaster Recovery site then under the Platform Base
licensing model there is no license charge for any of the target domain components. Auto Image Replication image volume is
not included in FETB capacity sizing since a customer may have any number of copies of the protected data as needed,
without incurring extra license charges. This is one of the benefits of the Platform Base license model.
Virtual Tape – Enables support for 3rd party virtual tape offerings. Includes sharing of virtual tape drives; no Shared Storage
Option license is required. Supports an unlimited number of virtual tape drives.
A list of NetBackup supported virtual tape libraries can be located on the NetBackup Hardware Compatibility Matrix.

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
Licensing for the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option is based on the amount of front-end data to be protected on
source systems (front-end terabyte). If a media server is used as part of the configuration, a NetBackup Enterprise Server or
NetBackup Server license is required.
The use of NetBackup Accelerator with third-party OpenStorage devices requires that the OpenStorage partner provides a
qualified plug-in. OST plug-ins are typically available asynchronously from the NetBackup release. Be sure to check that the
OpenStorage device is qualified for NetBackup Accelerator support before quoting Data Protection Optimization Option for use
with third party OpenStorage devices.
Customers using third-party OpenStorage partner storage devices that have deduplication capabilities that want to take
advantage of the NetBackup Accelerator performance advantages must license the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization
Option.
Notes:
To enable Deduplication support between a deduplication technology (for example, a hardware environment) and
NetBackup, a Data Protection Optimization license must be obtained for each front-end TB. See the Measuring
Platform Base Capacity section for how to calculate front-end terabyte capacity.
Customers who had purchased Enterprise Disk Option and had active maintenance were upgraded to Data
Protection Optimization Option with the release of NetBackup 7.6.
Customers who had purchased Flexible Disk, Virtual Tape, or OpenStorage Options and had active maintenance
were upgraded to Enterprise Disk in September 2008. Each customer received 1 Front-End TB of Enterprise Disk for
every Virtual TB of Flexible Disk, Virtual Tape and OpenStorage. Enterprise Disk is no longer provided in pricelists;
customers seeking to buy this are now required to buy the Data Protection Optimization Option.
Replication Director
NetBackup Replication Director Option provides unified, policy-based management of backups, snapshots and replication.
Replication Director is licensed by front-end terabytes (FETB) being protected. One NetBackup Replication Director license is
required for every front-end terabyte that is protected with array-based snapshots. Any number of replications is allowed since
only front-end capacity is counted.
Any related use of Snapshot Client capabilities is included in the licensing, and does not require an Enterprise Client license.
However, any other usage of features from Standard or Enterprise Client require the respective Client licenses. Duplication of
snapshots to disk or tape for backup or disaster recovery may require additional licenses, e.g. Library Based Tape Drive,
DPOO (deduplication).
Exception: Duplication to tape using the NDMP Option is included with Replication Director.

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
Notes:
Please see the NetBackup Hardware Compatibility Matrix for a listing of supported primary storage systems and
hardware snapshot technologies.
NDMP
NetBackup for NDMP provides reliable, high-performing backup and recovery services to tape or disk for NDMP-enabled
devices. One NetBackup for NDMP license is required for each NDMP-enabled NAS (network attached storage) device
requiring protection. NetBackup Enterprise Server and NetBackup Server can scale to protect an unlimited number of NDMP-
enabled NAS devices.
Some NDMP devices have multiple heads (sometimes called data movers or controllers). This is taken into account in the tier
listing. Please refer to the examples and notes for additional information.
Licensing is per NDMP NAS (host) regardless of the NDMP backup method (local, 3-way, or remote NDMP). For example, if a
customer has 5 NDMP-enabled NAS devices that require backup or restore services from NetBackup, 5 NetBackup for NDMP
licenses would be required.
A small number of tape libraries also implement NDMP (use of this capability was more common prior to NetBackup adding
SSO support for NDMP in NetBackup 6.0) and these also require a NDMP license.
When NDMP is only used for duplication of backup images, such as with the VTL direct-to-tape or OST to tape, there is no
need to purchase a NDMP license as that NDMP functionality is already enabled within NetBackup.
Notes:
In the event that multiple NAS devices are clustered in an Active/Active scenario all nodes must be licensed
separately.
Usage of Accelerator for NDMP requires Data Protection Optimization Option license(s) in addition to the NDMP
Option license(s)
For an updated list of supported NDMP devices, please refer to the NetBackup Hardware Compatibility Matrix.
Refer to the NetBackup NDMP Tier Matrix in order to select the correct server tier.

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
NetBackup support for physical tape drives controlled by a robotic library is licensed per physical tape drive; regardless of the
manufacturer, type of device, or number of servers attached to the library. There is no charge for stand-alone, non-robotic tape
drives directly attached to a NetBackup Master/Media Server or NetBackup Server. Refer to the Data Protection Optimization
Option for licensing of virtual tape libraries (VTLs).
Notes:
For an updated list of both supported tape drives and libraries, please refer to the NetBackup Hardware Compatibility
Matrix.
Shared Storage
NetBackup Shared Storage Option dynamically shares individual tape drives, standalone or in a robotic tape library, among
multiple NetBackup Media Servers and/or NDMP hosts (servers). These servers can be a NetBackup Master Server,
NetBackup Media Server, or NetBackup SAN Media Server.
NetBackup Shared Storage Option is licensed per shared tape drive, regardless of the manufacturer, type of device, or
number of NetBackup Servers attached to the SAN. Sharing of each physical tape drive among NetBackup Media Servers
and/or NDMP hosts (servers) requires an SSO license for that tape drive. The NetBackup Shared Storage Option license is in
addition to any required NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive licenses. If the shared tape drive is not included in a tape library,
then only a Shared Storage Option license is required. The Shared Storage Option is not needed when used with the
NetBackup Virtual Tape Option (included in Data Protection Optimization Option).
Notes:
Shared Storage Option maintains an “open” support policy for all SAN equipment. To ensure reliability and
performance, all servers must recognize the drives, via the SAN, before installation of NetBackup software.
Vault
NetBackup Vault requires a license for each physical tape drive in physical tape libraries used as the source or destination for
Vaulting. NetBackup Vault is licensed per NetBackup Storage Domain (i.e. one NetBackup Enterprise Master Server or
NetBackup Server) and includes four NetBackup Vault physical tape drive licenses.
If more than four physical tape drives are used in the libraries for duplication purposes, a NetBackup Vault Additional Drive
license would be required for each drive. A NetBackup Vault Unlimited Drive license provides support for unrestricted number
of drives per NetBackup Storage Domain (recommended if the library has more than 24 drives).
The Storage Lifecycle Policy feature (part of Data Protection Optimization Option) can be used for duplicating backup images

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
from one tape library to another one, instead of using NetBackup Vault for duplication. If this is done, only the physical tape
drives in the library ejecting tapes to be sent off-site and managed by NetBackup Vault would require NetBackup Vault tape
drive licenses.
The unlimited drive SKU includes the base NetBackup Vault license.
ALL physical tape drives in a library used for vaulting require a NetBackup Vault license.
When a VTL is the primary NetBackup storage and a customer wishes to run a duplication job to physical tape for offsite
storage, the customer must have an appropriate tape drive licenses.
NetBackup Vault Additional Drive licenses are not required when only one copy of the backup is being created and vaulted.
Notes:
Licensing 24 physical tape drives for NetBackup Vault equates to $50K. Therefore, it is recommended to sell the
NetBackup Vault Unlimited Drive license if the customer has over 24 physical tape drives that will be used for vaulting
purposes.
Other Options
OpsCenter Analytics
There are two packages of OpsCenter: Standard and Analytics. The Standard OpsCenter functionality and reports are
included with all NetBackup licensing. The customer is able to deploy OpsCenter within their environment as needed.
The base OpsCenter product and applicable support is available for customers who have a valid NetBackup license and
corresponding support contract. No support will be provided customer without a valid NetBackup license.
OpsCenter Analytics Option is builds on the OpsCenter standard features. OpsCenter Analytics enables advanced reporting
capabilities such as a custom report builder and the ability to write custom SQL queries on the OpsCenter database.
Furthermore, OpsCenter Analytics enables customer to access the entire history of their backup information. The base
OpsCenter product limits customers to a 60-day window into their backup history.

Self Service
NetBackup Self Service (NSS) provides an IT Self-Service platform that offers Backup as a Service (BaaS) where customers
and end users can self-serve their backup requirements on-demand.
Notes:
See the Measuring Platform Base Capacity section for how to calculate front-end terabyte capacity.
Licensing Examples
Scenario 1 – Traditional: Customer buys NetBackup under traditional model and pays for 20 Enterprise Servers, 100 Standard
Clients, 10 Enterprise Client, 15 Database Agents, 10 Tape Drives, 50TB of Data Protection Optimization and is managing 100
front-end terabytes (FETB) with NetBackup Self Service.
Customer would buy 100 TB licenses of Self Service.
Scenario 2 – Platform Base: Customer buys 100TB’s of Platform Base Complete and plans to manage 50 front-end terabytes
(FETB) with NetBackup Self Service.
Customer would buy 50 TB licenses of Self Service.

Notes:
When deploying one or more off-host clients (i.e. proxy system) exclusively for VM backups, they do not require a
separate client license. For example:
An off-host Windows client (backup host) exclusively for NetBackup for VMware or NetBackup for Hyper-V.
A VM Windows client (hotadd transport) exclusively for NetBackup for VMware.
An off-host client exclusively for backup of shared VM volume, e.g. VMware RDM disk, Hyper-V pass-thru
disk.

machine.
Specifically, AIX LPAR follows the general virtualization licensing; license at the physical server (e.g. license for the ESX
server and one license for any application/DB being protected). For zSeries LPARs, apply the applicable tiering (NetBackup
Hardware Tier Matrix).
When using a NetBackup client in one or more guest VMs, only one client license (Standard or Enterprise) is required for the
entire physical host regardless of the number of VMs.
When using a NetBackup database/application agent in one or more guest VMs, only one Application & Database Pack
license or SAP agent license is required per host server, regardless of how many VMs may be running a particular database
or application, and regardless of how many application instances are running.
The NetBackup Windows client (backup host) can be deployed as a VM on the VMware ESX server, eliminating the off-host
backup advantages. This can be done when the deployment of a physical backup server is not possible. If the backup host
VM is also a NetBackup Server, then an Enterprise Server license is still required.
In a VMware cluster, any/only VMware hosts (cluster nodes) that contain virtual machines protected by NetBackup require an
Enterprise Client license. Also, licensing must account for any migration of VMs between nodes. In other words, if a set of
cluster nodes are used to load-balance VMs, all nodes that participate must be licensed.
Performing an off-host backup of a Hyper-V VM snapshot requires that the NetBackup Windows client be installed on both the
Hyper-V host and the off-host Windows client. However, for consistency with NetBackup for VMware licensing practices, the
off-host capability is included in the Enterprise Client license of the Hyper-V host.
Also, for Hyper-V clusters, any/only Hyper-V hosts (cluster nodes) that contain virtual machines protected by NetBackup

NetBackup software is not included with a NetBackup appliance and must be licensed separately. Customers may either
purchase new NetBackup software licenses or transfer existing NetBackup software licenses to a NetBackup appliance.
Notes:
NetBackup Server can be used in a Two-Tier architecture where the appliance functions as the master and media
server and only the Standard client is used for client protection. Enterprise Server is required if the appliance is used
in a 3-tier architecture or Enterprise Client is used to protect clients.
NetBackup Appliance Services are sold per physical appliance and is comprised of three offerings:
Standard Deployment - Features remote expert assistance with installation and basic Appliance configuration.
Customers also receive an Appliance Services Report which provides a detailed deployment report and pre-flight
check of the appliance.
Preferred Deployment - Features remote expert assistance, but adds a more extensive configuration service to
ensure integration into the customer’s existing backup environment. Preferred Deployment offers a pre-engagement
environment report and recommendations to facilitate the optimization of the customers’ backup environment
Premium Deployment - Delivers all the benefits of Preferred, but includes on-site deployment by VERITAS experts
instead of remote deployment.

NetBackup 7.7 Licensing Guide
Customers are entitled to install and use one additional copy of the licensed software as a Cold Disaster Recovery License on
a Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment located at a Cold Disaster Recovery Site as part of a cluster of production servers.
IMPORTANT: With the exception of Cold Disaster Recovery situations, when a protected VM is copied, moved, or otherwise
transferred between physical hosts, each participating physical host must be licensed, e.g. clustering, load-balancing,
replication, etc.
“Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment” means a server, processor or device that has the Cold Disaster Recovery license
installed and configured but is either turn-off or is idle. An idle or ”passive” mode and configuration refers to the server in a
high availability cluster that has database and/or applications installed, but are not servicing user transactions or query
workloads during periods of normal operation.
“Cold Disaster Recovery License” means a copy of the licensed software deployed on Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment
granted by Veritas for the sole purpose of use by a customer in accordance with the requirements described above in the
event of a Disaster.
Current customers receive an automatic notification email and letter that announces the availability of a new version and
provides the serial number needed to register at the Customer Care License Portal. Customer Care should be able to help

The preferred download method from FileConnect is the managed download. This is the better option because the download
can resume if interrupted. The http download will restart the download process.
If your customer has any issues generating their license keys at the License Portal please pro-actively help by working with
customer care.
Cross-grades (XGRD)
The term “cross-grade” is used to describe when a product or option of lesser functionality is upgraded to a product or option
of greater functionality. Not all cross-grade scenarios are allowed.
In the event an organization requires advanced snapshot-based, SAN, and data center scalability solutions, a NetBackup
Server investment can be seamlessly upgraded to a NetBackup Enterprise Server solution.
Basic Support
Basic Support is for small businesses that need consistent, basic support with timely software updates. Customers include
small offices and home offices with a limited number of users, running a single server with one or two Veritas products
licensed where continuous uptime is not required. No IT activity is likely to take place after regional business hours. Basic
Support is not recommended for NetBackup customers.
Essential Support
Essential Support is for businesses that have an increased need for uninterrupted availability of their data and require around-
the-clock support. These customers are usually single-location, homogeneous environments that run workgroup servers and
multiple database together with Veritas products. IT activity during off-hours is limited. Essential Support is the minimum
recommended support level for NetBackup customers.

Customers may call Inside Sales to obtain an evaluation license key which will be sent via email.
NetBackup evaluation software is available to prospective customers through the Trialware Portal. Setup an account, log in,
and obtain access to download the NetBackup 7.6 electronic images. An evaluation license key must be used to enable the
software. Existing customers should be able to access media via FileConnect.
You must log into the NFR order web site with your Symantec email address for the User ID and enterprise password.
Because most customers see the amount of primary storage that they need protecting growing on a monthly basis, this
customer would want to purchase the capacity required to accommodate this growth. If this customer expected 10% growth in
source data per year they should add 10% to the total license amount (2.44 TB + 24.4 TB = 26.8) for a total of 27 TB.

An EMC NS84 has four data movers (according to EMC, the last digit is the number of data movers). A single NDMP Tier 4
license is required.
NetBackup Vault
A customer either uses NetBackup Vault to duplicate backup images from a VTL to a 10-drive physical tape library or uses
Storage Lifecycle Polices to perform backup im
age duplication, but uses NetBackup Vault to track tapes sent off-site. This would require a NetBackup Vault Base license and
six NetBackup Vault Additional Drive licenses.

Appendix
FAQ
1. NetBackup Platform Base – NDMP Edition says you cannot use NetBackup Accelerator because the licensing model
does not include Standard Client. However, Enterprise Server is licensed AND a NetBackup 5230 supports
Accelerator, so can I mount an NFS share from a NetApp filer on a 5230 and use Accelerator with the Platform Base
– NDMP base license?
Accelerator for NDMP is included as part of the Platform Base – NDMP Edition. However, other NetBackup
Accelerator workloads are not supported with the NDMP Edition. Even though you can use an NFS mount
on a 5230 you still cannot use Accelerator for non-NDMP workloads with an NDMP Edition. The customer
would have to upgrade any capacity they want Accelerator for from the NDMP Edition to Complete Edition in
order to get Standard Client enabled.
2. How do customers enable client licenses for 10 virtual machines on NetBackup?
Customers will not get separate license keys for the virtual machines as we don’t license VMs, just the
physical hosts. All client license keys are entered only on master servers and media servers. Once an
Enterprise Client key is entered on the master server, you can install the client on as many VMs as you like;
there is no need for an individual key for each virtual machine
3. If a customer has bought the NetBackup 5230 Appliance in order to use it as a media server while using OST to
backup data to Data Domain, what license will the customer need to enable OST and can the customer use the disk
pool of the NetBackup appliance as a normal disk pool instead of a dedupe disk pool?
The customer will need to buy the Data Protection Optimization Option as it contains the Advanced Disk
functionality supported by the 5230. With regards to the disk pool, the customer can use the disk pool of the
NetBackup appliance as a normal disk pool instead of a dedupe disk pool but with the right NetBackup
licenses along with it.
4. Does the customer need to include Enterprise Vault data as well when calculating FETB to buy the Platform Base –

Complete Edition?
Yes, the customer needs to include EV data as well. In traditional licensing, EV licenses include NetBackup
EV agent and SQL agent at no extra cost. You only need to buy Standard Client for each EV server.
However, with Platform Base licensing, anything that NetBackup protects must be included in the FETB
capacity for licensing. This means that the capacity of the EV vault stores that you’re protecting must be
licensed.
5. If a customer has SAP with Oracle, is an App+DB Pack required or just NetBackup for SAP?
For SAP on Oracle or Max DB, license NetBackup for SAP.
For SAP on other databases (e.g. DB2, SQL Server), or if the customer prefers to backup the underlying
Oracle database through Oracle instead of through SAP, license the App+DB Pack.
