August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC 1-3 e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Product Overview

2. Design Features

A. High image quality

A-01. Micro-grain toner supports higher image quality

Because the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c employ newly developed micro-grain toner, they deliver
fine lines that are sharper and noticeably clearer text as well as achieving an improved, more unified
finish for highlighted areas. These machines also minimize graininess to deliver smoother, more
beautiful image quality, while the new toner also contributes to oil-less fusing.

A-02. Improved color reproduction

Blue reproduction has been significantly improved through our stringent selection of pigments for the
magenta toner.

A-03. Improved reproduction of text/fine lines

High-precision micro recognition
Color documents can often involve the reproduction of
black text on a colored background, and with the e-
STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c such elements are produced
with outstanding clarity. This is due to improvements
made in recognition processing for black text on colored
backgrounds that result not only in more truthful
recognition of text, but also improved reproduction quality
for photographic images by minimizing recognition errors
for photographic areas.

TRC (Text Recognition Control) processing

With other machines, there can be a tendency for black logos
to be reproduced with dark edges, but a lighter inner area. As
the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c use new TRC processing
technology, however, thick black logos are reproduced with
sharply unified black throughout.

August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC 2-1 e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features

4-line CCD sensor
The e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c feature an exclusive sensor for the reading of K (black) in addition
to those used for reading RGB color. Combining with sharp edge processing, Serial Filter processing
and Dynamic Range Correction*, this advance helps ensure output of black is as sharp as possible.
*Dynamic Range Correction measures variations in levels of background density for individual documents, and reduces
unwanted background influences to maximize the legibility of text.

Printer image object adaptation processing

Improved text reproduction at the time of print output is
ensured not only through image processing tailored to each
object, but also through use of surrounding object information
and print image data. Text on image objects (such as a colored
background) is smoothly reproduced without any fading where
the text meets the background. And at the time of “Black Over
Print,” high-level precision and sharpness are achieved
through screen processing for the reproduction of black text on
colored backgrounds.

A-04. Minimized out-of-register colors, jitter and moire

High-precision drive mechanism
Through fine-tuning the drum drive gears and also making improvements to the drum drive coupling,
the drum rotates at a constant speed – even in the unlikely case of an accidental error. As a result,
jitter is suppressed, out-of-register colors are minimized and the incidence of moiré is greatly reduced.

e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features 2-2 August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC

A-05. Suppression of off-setting
The temperature sensor located in the fuser area has been replaced with a non-contact sensor. This
newly employed non-contact sensor is able to detect temperature of the transfer belt at a faster speed
and therefore enables an improvement in temperature control performance. As this supports much
more precise control over temperature, the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c are able to realize
suppressed image deterioration and off-set that are otherwise caused by changes in temperature.
These models also utilize newly developed toner that contributes to oil-less fusing, which in turn
eliminates the need for the oil roller that is conventionally attached to the fuser belt. Thus, oil banding
and stains on output images are no longer a problem, and maintenance is made much easier.

A-06. Transfer control system for improved image quality stability

Thanks to the transfer control system that monitors physical changes in the materials of transfer parts
and accurately feeds back the information, highly stable image quality is achieved at all times –
enabling users to enjoy high image quality throughout continuous output.

A-07. Improved sharpness and density

A new fθ lens is incorporated into the LSU (Laser Scanner Unit).
Featuring unwavering performance in varying atmospheres and
heightened surface precision, this lens minimizes any change in the
focal point that may otherwise be caused by changes in humidity.
This allows it to deliver elevated sharpness and repress any
unevenness in density that may otherwise result from changes in
environmental conditions. Furthermore, as the lens serves to extend
the length of the light path and thus the effective scanning width, this
new, improved performance extends even to A3-Wide size jobs.

August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC 2-3 e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features

A-08. High speed and quality at 600dpi, 32-bit/pixel
By incorporating 8-bit RIP, the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c deliver high image quality supported by
256 gradation-per-dot processing capability. When one considers that a machine with 1-bit RIP
supports only 2 gradations per dot, it's easy to see that the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c really are a
world ahead of other machines.

A-09. Background adjustment function

When making a copy of a very thin paper original, such as a newspaper, the contents of the other side
of the paper can often shine through to interfere with the desired contents. Normally, a background
adjustment function is used to counter such problems or eliminate an unwanted background color;
however this usually results in altered color for the desired content – making graphics, photos and text
look different to the original. The e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c, on the other hand, feature a new
background adjustment function that uses a unique method to successfully reduce the density of the
background while maintaining the correct hues of the original.

A-10. Accurate image quality adjustment

Aiming to offer the user the specific type of image quality desired, the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c
are equipped with a diverse range of image quality adjustment functions. As a salesperson, please
make sure you understand the scope and effects of each one of these image quality adjustment
functions. By ideally selecting or combining these functions, you can offer the precise image quality
and image quality adjustment the user truly desires.

Copy image quality adjustment

From the control panel, users can simply adjust CMYK or RGB color balance and take control over
background, sharpness, hue and saturation adjustments too. There is also a handy one-touch button*
that allows adjustments according to five image types – Warm, Cool, Vivid, Clear and Marker.
Furthermore, twin color and mono color settings are also possible. And for CMYK color balance
control, users can make detailed settings for areas of differing density levels. Once a setting is
selected, it can be saved in the template. This can then be further adjusted for each job if desired.
*When adjustments are made using the one-touch button, other adjustments are rendered inaccessible.

e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features 2-4 August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC

Print image quality adjustment
Toshiba’s original CMM (Color Management Module) controls output image quality for both color and
B&W – allowing image quality adjustments to be made from the printer driver and enabling processing
of color conversions in relation to the received adjusted profile data through use of the color profile
tool.

Printer driver
The printer driver offers four image quality types (General/Photograph/Presentation/Line Art) as
standard. It also allows users to adjust CMYK color balance, image sharpness, brightness, contrast
and saturation.
For CMYK color balance, users have a choice of adjustments by highlight area, mid-tones area and
high density area (shadows). Adjustments can also be made by area according to the level of density
– with a choice of low, middle and high. Once a setting is selected, the user can save it as profile data
in the Print Mode, which can then be further adjusted for each job if desired. Up to 24 image quality
types can be stored in total (General/Photograph/ Presentation/Line Art + 20 new types).

Color Profile Tool

Toshiba’s original color profile tool allows the user to have a service person adjust the color tone of all
output via the PS driver. A service person can easily download the MFP profile data to a PC through
use of the color tool and make desired adjustments on a PC, then upload the new profile data to the
MFP. In this convenient and efficient manner, the service person can not only make gamma
adjustments, but also make overall color adjustments, selected color adjustments and take control
over contrast, saturation, brightness and other elements to customize the colors to meet specific user
needs.
Note: All adjustments made via the color profile tool are designed to be handled by a service person.

August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC 2-5 e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features

e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features 2-6 August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC

B. User friendliness

B-01. Improved printer driver tab structure

The tab structure for the printer driver has been redesigned for smoother operation, with a new 6-tab
structure comprising “Basic,” “Finishing,” “Paper Handling,” “Image Quality,” “Effect” and “Others.”
Additionally, the previously text-heavy information within each tab has been replaced with a range of
easy-to-understand icons. The new design also shows frequently used items on the basic display
within each tab to speed recurring jobs. And when the need arises to make detailed changes, a pop-
up window can be displayed, then closed to keep the driver screen from looking cluttered and to help
minimize input errors.

The new printer driver tab structure also means users can set types of various print jobs, such as
normal print, private print and proof print from all tabs. Furthermore, customization has now been
made possible through simply adjusting the settings for the PAL (Printer Abstraction Layer), with
customization including the alteration of default settings for the Combo Box, List Box, Check Box and
Radio Buttons on the driver. With such comprehensive and precise control, users can swiftly and
smoothly customize the driver to precisely match their needs.
(Note: Printer driver customization via PAL is carried out by dealers/distributors only. Supported operating systems include
Windows 2000, XP and 2003. For details concerning customization procedures and limitations, please refer to the BSI
on the service information database.)

Basic tab
An illustration of the MFP that displays automatically in response to MFP events makes it easy to
understand the status of the MFP at a glance by utilizing the information of the MIB (Management
Information Base). Such information includes paper size, paper type, paper source, etc. And for
additional convenience, a new “Twin-color printing” function can also be set from this tab.

Finishing tab
The finishing functions that were previously located within the setting/layout tabs are now collected
and shown on a single screen. And with icons used to represent each possible finishing setting,
selection is made easier, too.

Paper handling tab

This convenient tab makes it easy to select a setting from a choice of “Destination,” “Front cover,”
“Back cover,” “Insert pages” and “Interleaving” settings.

Presentation and Line Art, and also provides access to control over elements such as CMYK intensity
(color balance settings), sharpness, brightness, contrast and saturation (image attribute settings).
Taking convenience further, user-adjusted settings can be stored as a set under a user-created name,
which can then be added to the print mode as a handy shortcut for use when the same settings are
required again.

Effect tab
The Effect tab allows image overlays and watermarks to be quickly and easily selected.
(Note: In the near future, this tab is planned to include access to settings for Hardcopy Security Printing Level 1)

"Other" tab
The "Other" tab can be used to set the default tab that first appears when the user opens a driver. As a
result, users can assign the most frequently used tabs to the default tab to speed and simplify repeat
operations. This tab also offers the ability to select a custom paper size.

B-02. Color control panel for maximum visibility and operational ease
The new large, half VGA size, color LCD touch panel offers a higher level of visibility and enables
smoother operation. The colors used on the control panel have been specifically selected not only for
good visibility, but also to be easy on the eyes. In fact, the colors and text are strategically designed
for maximum operability even for those with visibility problems. Featuring the same large icons and
tilting design of previous models, it delivers maximum user friendliness. And employing strategically
colored buttons, it reduces mistakes as well as the time required to complete an operation. The control
panel also features other various improvements including image quality adjustment and displays of

B-03. Templates for accelerated office performance
Recurring office operations can be significantly speeded through use of Toshiba’s handy template
function that allows user-selected combinations of settings such as resolution, recipient address and
finishing options to be accessed and used with the click of an icon. In fact, templates are not only
useful for frequently used functions, but can also be easily created for any job that’s useful or difficult
to set up each time.
While templates with easy settings can be created by any user, complex settings can be created by a
master operator. Once all the settings have been saved, users can call on the template for smooth
access anytime. Up to 12,060 different templates can be stored by the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c
in total (comprising 200 private groups containing 60 templates each and 60 public templates) for
access directly from the control panel.
Actually working the template function is simplicity itself. All the user has to do is press the
[TEMPLATE] key on the control panel of the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c to access the initial
template screen that allows template creation and customization for copier, fax, network scanner and
box functions. Alternatively, users can create and edit templates for scan and fax jobs through using
TopAccess on any network-connected computer. There’s also an Auto Start Function with which the
user can further speed the process of template utilization. This function activates a job automatically
upon selecting a desired template, thereby eliminating the need for pressing the Start button.
Please bear in mind that while the e-STUDIO’s template function is highly convenient, powerful and
flexible, feedback from e-STUDIO owners has revealed that many still do not know how to create and
use templates. It is precisely for this reason that the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c have been created
with 12 frequently used templates already installed in the hard drive. As a result, users can enjoy a
higher level of convenience in a wide range of jobs straight after installation.

B-04. A single, unified address book

Email addresses and fax numbers are unified into a single address book, which allows the user to
simultaneously select both email addresses and fax numbers for data transmission to multiple
recipients. Saving such transmission settings with mixed destinations into a template can further
increase workflow efficiency.

B-05. Diverse finishing functions

A range of optional finishers (a saddle-stitch Finisher and a new Multi-staple Finisher) can increase
speed and office efficiency when making multiple copy/print sets.

August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC 2-9 e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features

B-06. Multi-staple Finisher (MJ-1101) + Hole Punch unit (MJ-6101)
The Multi-staple Finisher has been newly developed to deliver higher output performance and less
noise, while its new Active Drop Technology dramatically improves the processing time of double-
position stapling and ensures automatic double stapling without the speed loss associated with other
machines. This new finisher also offers a handy manual staple function, which allows the user to
manually staple (front or rear position) a stack of documents by simply placing the stack on the output
tray of the finisher and pressing a button.
The hole punch unit for the multi-staple finisher features the advanced 2D Register Mechanism, which
combines the use of skew, vertical and horizontal adjustment sensors to detect any front or rear edge
skewing of the document and automatically align the documents for hole punching by the Hole Punch
Unit, MJ-6101.

B-07. Saddle-stitch Finisher (MJ-1030) + Hole Punch unit (MJ-6004)

The saddle-stitch Finisher makes output in the form of booklets easy. Users can also benefit from the
addition of the optional Hole Punch unit (MJ-6004) to the Saddle-stitch Finisher to realize automated
hole punching in sets of copied/printed documents to prepare them for binding.

B-08. Scan to USB
This highly convenient new function allows users to store scanned data on external memory media
inserted into a USB port of the e-STUDIO models. As this does away with the need to retrieve data via
the network, users can avoid placing additional burden on network traffic, and can benefit whenever
there’s a need to take data with them in a hurry through use of the familiar USB port. For instance,
let’s say you are making a presentation in a conference room and you are in need of some specific
data you have in the form of a hard copy only. In such a case, you can simply scan the hard copy and
save the data on USB memory using the handy Scan to USB function of the e-
STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c.
Then, you can come back to the presentation room with the USB memory and stick it in the USB port
of your PC to show the data on screen.
Note Error messages may be encountered when available memory capacity of the external memory is smaller than the scan
data volume.

B-09. Remaining toner volume display

The remaining volume of toner can be displayed in 4 stages – both on the control panel and in
TopAccess.

B-10. TopAccess
Coming complete with the web-based TopAccess application as standard, the
e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c offer convenient real-time device management that allows job status
information to be displayed from any network computer via the Internet - regardless of operating
system or platform. Providing instant alerts the moment an MFP event occurs, such as when paper or
toner runs out or when maintenance is required, it allows users to minimize downtime by taking
immediate corrective action. And because TopAccess gives a graphic representation of the e-STUDIO,
users can instantly see the sizes of paper required, current options selected and other elements.
TopAccess can even be used to enter data the Address Book and create templates, while additional
features including detailed counter information, authentication and security measures, and access to
remote service call settings can support precise MFP management.
TopAccess can also be set to display counter information for print/scan jobs including details such as
document name, user name and the date and time each job was requested, while security is
enhanced through access to functions such as the changing of passwords, the ability to reset the print
counter and also select TopAccess, Job Log, Network and Printer settings.

B-11. TopAccessDocMon
With the advantage of TopAccessDocMon, users of the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c are able to
monitor all jobs, enjoy closer control over their own jobs and confirm e-STUDIO status at any moment
from the convenience of any network desktop. There are also popup alerts that keep network
members informed of print event matters such as job completion, job failure and general status.

B-12. Job Build

The Job Build function allows the user to select from modes such as text, photo, color and black-and-
white to match individual pages of an original selected for reproduction as a single document. It also
enables mode selection for single or double-sided copying as required, while the originals can be set
on the platen, passed through the document feeder, or processed as a mixture of both. Job Build then
automatically reproduces each page of the mixed original documents as a single job, which can also
be automatically sorted and stapled to create professional-looking, unified documents in minimal time,
with minimal cost.

B-13. e-BRIDGE Viewer speeds the search for documents

A unique new application from Toshiba, the e-BRIDGE Viewer significantly reduces the time taken to
search for all selected folders in client PCs. Additionally, all data stored in an e-filing box can be
selected via the e-BRIDGE Viewer to automatically be downloaded to client PCs for searching, too.
Featuring a unique browser-based interface, the e-BRIDGE Viewer displays a vertical, color-coded
strata on the right of the screen, with each stratum representing a file and indicating chronological
order with the latest documents at the top. Moving through the pile is extremely simple using the
scrolling wheel of the mouse, enabling users to pass through the pile of up to 2,000 documents at up
to 10 documents per second. Finding the right document is made easier still as the color coding of the
strata bar can be set to automatically represent different folders or files created in different
applications, or the user can instead assign a specific color to each individual tile for more
personalized organization.
Please note that the e-BRIDGE Viewer is currently available for PC users connected via network to
the e-STUDIO and is compatible with systems running Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features 2-12 August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC

B-14. e-BRIDGE Viewer is so easy to use
To begin, users simply open the retrieval screen. Then, to make the process of retrieval easy, the user
can narrow down the document search by folder, application type, date, color of attached memos and
file name with the search also extending to documents attached to Email. The e-BRIDGE Viewer then
carries out a search in accordance with the user-selected criteria and changes all unrelated color-
coded sections of the strata bar to gray, leaving only those related to the search in color. To find the
desired document, users then move through the remaining color-coded tiles with a simple scroll of the
mouse wheel

B-15. Other e-BRIDGE Viewer features

The e-BRIDGE Viewer does more than help users find documents, with a range of other features that
add convenience after the document has been found. A “Memo” function lets users paste up to 10
memo notes on each page. These memos can then be moved around the page at will, and the user
can choose from six different colors. The e-BRIDGE Viewer also allows documents to be printed out
without having to launch the application they were created in. Furthermore, the e-BRIDGE Viewer can
be set to direct all incoming faxes to a client PC via a selected box in the e-
STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c, downloading the data from the box to a PC at user-designated intervals
with a pop-up notice to signal new arrivals so the user can view arriving faxes without the need to print
them out.

C-02. 30 sec. wake-up from low power mode

When using the low power mode, the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c can become ready for use again
in just 30 seconds – enabling users to cut costs without having to compromise performance.

e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features 2-14 August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC

C-03. Fast First Copy Time (FCOT)
For color copies, the three e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c models deliver a first copy time of just 8.6
seconds For black and white, the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c (35ppm) boast 6.5 seconds FCOT, while the
e-STUDIO3510c (45ppm) delivers the first copy in a mere 5.2 seconds.

C-04. Improved Scan to/Box to functions

”Scan to” functions such as Scan to File, Scan to Box and Scan to Email have also been refined in the
e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c, with improvements made to the data processing system that not only
delivers higher scan speeds, but also accelerates the creation of JPEG files and carries out Box to
Print with the same engine speed of the MFP.

C-05. High-speed scan processing

In the case of JPEG files, file format conversion used to be handled by software that would store
scanned data temporarily in the HDD one page at a time. The data would then be retrieved and
passed through JPEG compression. With the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c, however, JPEG file
creation is conducted by the hardware. Scanned data is read 2 pages at a time, then passed
immediately through JPEG compression without it ever being stored in the HDD. As a result, JPEG file
creation is completed as soon as data reading is finished, which translates into a significant increase
in the processing speed for “Scan to” functions.
(Note: The advantage of this function is especially apparent when using Scan to File.)

C-06. Real-time Box to Print processing

In previous systems, the printing of data stored via Scan to Box used to begin only once all of the
pages had undergone format and resolution alteration. With the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c,
however, format and resolution alteration is conducted in real-time within the hardware as soon as a
print command is entered, so printing can start immediately following the print command through RIP-
less processing. All data stored with Box to Print can therefore be printed out with the same engine
speed of the MFP.

August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC 2-15 e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features

C-07. High compression PDF known as "Slim PDF"
With the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c, PDF files can now be created with ideal data compression for
text and non-text areas. Using the Slim PDF function, an original layout analysis is carried out to
detect text and non-text areas and the most appropriate compression ratio and resolutions are applied
to each area in the creation of the PDF. As the PDF format compresses data to 1/100* of the original
data size, it is highly convenient in various situations, such as when sending a color document as an
Email attachment, for example.
*For example, use of PDF can turn an A4/300dpi, 26MB original into a 300KB PDF file. Compression ratio varies depending on
the original data.

Slim PDF specifications

— Scanning color modes: “FULL COLOUR” and “GRAY SCALE”
— Resolution is fixed at 300dpi
— Standard support of scanning up to A4 size
— With optional expansion memory, scanning of up to A3 is possible.
— The same settings that can be selected with ordinary Scan to File Color and Gray scales modes
are applicable to Slim PDF settings.
(e.g. background adjustment, RGB adjustment, etc.)

— In terms of image quality, Slim PDF is inferior to regular JPEG because in Slim PDF data volume
is made smaller by further compressing data using appropriate compression methods and
resolutions. Please recommend regular Scan to File (JPEG compression) when your customer
demands higher image quality.

e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c Design Features 2-16 August 2006 TOSHIBA TEC

D. Security

D-01. Standard data encryption function

The e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c offer a HDD data encryption function as a standard feature,
whereas this function via scrambler board used to be an optional extra on previous models. And as the
e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c use AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), the ASIC-incorporated next-
generation data encryption method, they offer data encryption that’s more assured – being more
secure than the previously used "Triple DES" encryption, and being recognized as an industry
standard that is considered "unbreakable".
Note: As a default setting, the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c come with the encryption function turned off. Users can have a service
person turn it on as required.

D-02. Optional data overwrite kit

In addition to the standard data encryption function, the user can achieve an even higher level of
security by securely overwriting all temporary HDD data with the optional data overwrite kit installed to
ensure zero chance of data recovery.

D-03. ISO15408 and EAL3

Toshiba will acquire international standard certification for information security evaluation - ISO15408
Level 3 for Data Overwrite Kit.

D-04. A high level of security via solid authentication functions

With the e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c, the user can limit or manage access to the MFP by utilizing
up to 10,000 user IDs and 1,000 department codes. And with a Role Based Access Control function,
the administrator can decide the capabilities available to each individual user. Such capabilities not
only enable more effective management, but also help prevent unauthorized machine access and data
leakage. Particularly of use for these color machines is the Copy/print Management for Color Only
function that allows unlimited B&W use and limited color use as an additional cost management
measure.

D-05. RoHS
Please remember that our efforts to minimize any impact on the environment continue with the
e-STUDIO2500c/3500c/3510c. We remain committed to the reduction of hazardous substances output
in line with the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) requirements of the European Union for
2006.

Notes
• In the PM support mode, the names, replacement cycle, present number of copies/printouts and
present operating time of PM parts can be displayed and checked on the touch panel screen.
Parts whose present number of copies/printouts exceeds the replacement cycle number must be
replaced immediately. After the part has been replaced, enter the PM support mode to reset the
counter values of the replaced part, so that you can know the exact time when the next
replacement should be carried out.

• The replacement cycles of the feed roller, pickup roller and separation roller in each paper feed
unit are decided by the number of sheets sent from each feed unit. To know whether it is
necessary to replace parts, go into the PM support mode to see the present number of paper fed
from each feed unit and check this with the “replacement cycle” in the following table. The
replacement cycle is common to all models.
