1 The columns can be braced or un-braced. A click of the respective radio button makes the Column
braced or Un-braced.
2 Up to six loading cases can be considered for the design of each column.
3 Each RoundCol data file can hold design information for up to 200 columns. The file size, when
maximum, is about 600 KB.
4 A pull down combo box displays a scrollable list of all user descriptions for each column. This
permits re-display and re-design of each column with ease and rapidity at a later stage.
5 Auto analysis checks the design of all columns by one click of a command button. If required, the
results for each column can also be printed by the Auto analysis.
6 Fail-codes for the design check of each column and its 6 loading cases are shown in red cell pattern.
The use of red pattern makes the failing columns apparent at a glance. The Fail-codes are also shown
in the “Store” worksheet, after the Auto analysis of all columns as a batch.
7 When designing un-braced columns, floor displacement can be also be specified for each column. As
described in Clause 3.8.3.8 of the code, this deflection is used for calculating the deflection induced
moment in the column design.
8 By the click of a radio button, the end connection for each column can be specified as being Rigid,
Semi-rigid or Pinned. For un-braced columns, the top connection can also be a Free connection. The
above 4 connections respectively represent type 1, 2, 3 and 4 end connections described in Section
3.8.1.6.2 of the code. These connections help establish the factor for effective column height from
Table 3.19 and 3.20 of the Code.
9 RoundCol is a one-page document for the design of all Circular columns using BS8110. The screen
and output layout has been so arranged that the user or a checking authority can check all results by
hand calculations.
10 The program uses an interactive technique to calculate moment capacities of a column section
corresponding to its balanced failure load and applied axial loads for each of its six loading cases.
11 The column shape and position of reinforcing bars are plotted in a diagrams. This diagram also shows
the position of neutral axis and the extent of the concrete compression zone.
12 RoundCol incorporates the use of default values for new columns. The user can set these to any
desired values. They are fcu, mc, ms, diameter of column, number of steel bars, cover to the
centroid of steel, column height and the area of steel reinforcement bars.
Introduction
RoundCol is an Excel Spreadsheet template for the design of Circular columns using BS8110.
Because of its shape, all columns are considered as subjected to uni-axial bending. When it is required
to consider a column with bi-axial bending, the two eccentricities can be combined to make it a column
having one eccentricity moment.
RoundCol can hold design information for up to 200 columns. Using a pull down combo box, the
design information for any column can be retrieved, amended and re-saved for design use as and when
necessary.
Each Column in RoundCol can have up to 6 Loading Cases. Although the design results are displayed
for one load case at a time, RoundCol checks the design for all 6 loading cases in one step. If a column
fails the design checks for any of its load cases, the Fail-Code is shown indicating the failure. Detailed
results for any load case can be displayed by the click of its radio button and also printed as and when
required.
If you receive an Excel Warning about running Macros and are prompted for whether to load them,
answer YES to Load and Enable Macros. RoundCol incorporates VB Macros and to allow your
computer to use them is vital for its operation.
Using RoundCol
Cells shaded in Light Green indicate positions for the user input. Cells shaded in Light Blue also
indicate user input but via cells for Loading Case Data; they cannot be edited directly.
In addition to describing Job Information in the heading part, column data is entered in 3 parts of the
screen. The first part in top left of the screen is for column size and strengths of concrete and steel.
The second part the top right of the screen is for bending about the X-axis. The third part at the bottom
full width of the template is for describing details of six loading cases.
RoundCol employs an interactive procedure to check the design of columns. When the data input for a
column is complete, the user needs to click the “Analyse and Update” button at top left of the screen.
RoundCol checks the column design for all six loading cases and updates the screen display to show its
results. This is indicated by the disappearance of a red diagonal warning across the screen “Results
Invalid – Click Analyse and Update Button”. At this stage, RoundCol results can be printed and also
saved by clicking “Log Data (Using Store No 1 to 200):” command button.
Method of Design
The ultimate moment capacity of a column section subjected to a given axial load is found by setting
up equilibrium equations. As these equations are at times quadric or cubic, an iterative technique is
used to solve them. These equations are set up and solved for finding moment capacities at the balance
failure load and at each axial load for the six loading cases.
As far as possible, the method of design is in accordance with the recommendation of the code. The
assumptions used are those stated in Clause 3.4.4.1 of BS8110: Part 1. To derive stresses in the
compression zone of the concrete, the simplified stress block illustrated in figure 3.3 of the Code is
used. To derive stresses for steel reinforcement in both the compression and tension zone of the
column section, the Short term design stress strain curve shown in Fig 2.2 of the Code is used.
The material factors of strength for both the concrete and the steel reinforcement are variable. As any
other data, the user can change them on the screen.
Origin
To specify the position of reinforcing bars, the origin is located at the bottom qudarant point of the
section. Using the number of bars specified by the user and cover to the centroid of steel
reinforcement from the outer edge, RoundCol calculates these co-ordinates by itself.
To calculate moment capacities of the column section, the origin for axial load is taken at centroid of
the Circular concrete section. Any eccentricity the axial load may have relative to this point is
described via its net eccentricity moments about the X-axis.
Units
RoundCol employs mixed units for ease of use and compliance with the code provisions. The used
units are stated beside the displayed information and results.
A casual Excel user generally does not need to tweak or amend the “Store” worksheet. An experience
Excel user, however, can benefit by generating and using this information by Copy, Paste and Fill-
Down commands of Excel. It is strongly recommended that Cut Command of Excel is not used on this
worksheet; use of this command affects the worksheet layout and can disrupt the working of RoundCol.
Clicking the “Log Data (Using Store No 1 to 200):” button writes the information to the “Store”
Worksheet. For saving data to disk, it necessary for the user to take the standard File and Save option
for saving Excel Files.
To keep design information for each column, RoundCol uses a Store Number. This number is in the
range from 1 to 200. To locate and identify a column data, this number is used to scroll in the Store
Worksheet and locate data for a given column.
Entering “Y” in the “Analyse Y” column, signifies that the RC column in its row need to be analysed.
Leaving the cells blank signifies that respective Column are not be analysed. On a machine with
Pentium 200 MHz CPU, the RoundCol analysis takes about 3 seconds for each column.
Entering a Positive number 1 to 6 in the “Print LC” column indicates that all Loading Cases for the
column up to this number need to be printed. Entering a Negative number indicates that only one
Loading Case need to be printed. RoundCol converts the display to 1 to n when a positive number n is
entered and to n only when a negative number n is entered. Leaving the cells blank signifies that no
printing of results is required.
Fail-Codes
RoundCol shows Fail-Codes for the design check of each column and its 6 loading cases.
The components of this code are: 1- axial capacity; 2- moment Capacity; 3- steel amount being within
the minimum and maximum allowable limits; 4- slenderness limit; 5- minimum number of bars in the
section being not less than six; 6- bar diameter being not less than 12 mm; 7- connections in X-
direction being OK to Tables 3.19 and 3.20.
The above codes are combined to make them an 7-digit number for concise output. For example, a
Fail-Code of 301 means the column failing in axial compression and not satisfying the
maximum/minimum steel amount requirements of the code. A null or no code display means that the
column passes all checks.
