Countries of the World Lesson Plan (English)

Five 120-minute class periods

Lesson Overview/Rationale:
It is important to be able to discuss the topics concerning other regions of the world using English.
This includes having the knowledge and attitude needed to converse about the general
environment, people, culture, and attractions from countries around the world. Students will be
expanding their English vocabulary, practicing their grammar skills, and demonstrating their
computer skills while creating a presentation using PowerPoint on the country of their choice
and then presenting it to the class.

Curriculum Framework/Standard:
This is the national curriculum for Indonesia, which is where I plan on teaching English.

Learning Objectives:
● Students will be able to summarize a few general facts from countries around the world
● Students will be able to describe climate features in English
● Students will be able to match nationalities, languages, and activities unique to different
countries
● Students will be able to identify famous foods from around the world and explain diets
● Students will be able to describe tourist destinations and famous sites
● Students will be able to write a paper describing all factors of their country and culture in
Indonesia

Technology Uses:
● Students will use PowerPoint to organize a presentation
● Students will find at minimum of one online article concerning their country
● Students will use Word to write an essay
● Google Translate

Materials:
● Computer with Internet
● Microsoft Office
● Provided books on other countries
● Reliable sources of information
● Provided articles on multiple countries geography, food, culture, and tourist sites
● Notebooks and pencils for taking notes and writing

Procedure:
1. Teacher will begin the chapter by handing out a vocabulary sheet for the students to
study. This can be used as a reference for the following lesson.
2. The students will read aloud, with the teacher’s help, a few articles about countries
around the world. While reading these articles, the students will be asked to circle the
words not recognized and highlight the newly learned vocabulary words.
3. Students will have time to ask questions to the teacher and discuss the interests.
4. The students will be introduced to the presentation project’s guidelines and rubric.
5. By the end of the first period, students will be assigned in groups based on interest, and
have a teacher’s approval for their country of choice to present.
6. For the second period, the class will begin with matching the new vocabulary with the
appropriate images and descriptions in front of the class.
7. Then students will be given time to work in their groups on their projects with the
teacher’s help.
8. Third class period will be dedicated to the students working in groups on their
presentations.
9. By the end of the third class, the teacher will discuss the rubric for the take home short
essay about their own culture and experience living in Indonesia.
10. Class periods four and five will be presentation days where the groups will inform other
students about the country of their choice.

11. Students who are not presenting must take some notes in English of the countries
presented.
12. Students will submit the essays either handwritten or written on Microsoft Word on the
last day of this chapter.
13. A short matching vocabulary quiz will be given at the end of the last period which the
students can complete in groups of two.
14. Notes will be collected as well for extra credit.

Assessment:
● Rubric evaluating the presentation, PowerPoint, and speech skills with the focus on
accurate information, effort into the project, correct use of technology, and English skills
● Rubric evaluating the short essay where the focus is describing Indonesia with correct
grammar and vocabulary terms
● Short vocabulary quiz will be twenty questions matching Bahasa Indonesia words to
English
● Notes based on quality will be used as extra credit for one of the projects or quiz
(wherever the points are needed)
