TWO STROKE HYDROGEN ENGINE

Hydrogen plays a major role in future fuel needs. Power to weight ratio is
more for two stroke engine than four stroke engines but low efficiency and polluting
environment .Considering all these effects two stroke hydrogen engine is designed for
better efficiency, compactness and zero pollution.
FUEL PRODUCTION:
Fuel for this engine is hydrogen at high pressure which is obtained by high
pressure electrolysis equipment .It consists of high pressure cylinder from bottom
electric connection for electrodes with insulators avoid passing the current to pressure
cylinder .In this cylinder water is fed at high pressure and current is passed to
electrodes producing hydrogen and oxygen at high pressure because of closed
container already at high pressure water, the same is used to inject in combustion
chamber.
WORKING OF ENGINE:
In this engine first stroke is completely expansion stroke but next stroke
consists of exhaust and compression .The fuel at high pressure is injected in
combustion chamber, spark plug ignites the fuel mixer and the piston moves from
TDC to BDC by expansion then exhaust valve opens to relieve the pressure. After a
short interval intake valve also opens in which air is sent to combustion chamber at
high pressure which will scavenges out the exhaust gases through exhaust valve for
quarter revolution of crank, then exhaust valve closes and the inlet also closes.
Compression takes place up to TDC .So compression ratio is less but expansion is
more by giving more energy and efficiency.

VALVE TINING DIAGRAM FOR TWO STROKE HYDROGEN ENGINE

THEORETICAL P-V DIAGRAM OF TWO STROKE HYDROGEN ENGINE

P-V DIAGRAM:
The p-v diagram is almost like Otto cycle engine but from 3 to 5.
1-2: Expansion of exhaust gases moving piston from TDC to BDC.
2-3: Opening of exhaust valve relieving pressure to atmosphere.
3-4: Scavenges out the exhaust gases moving piston at a distance of half of stroke
towards TDC in which pressurised air scavenges out the exhaust gases.
4-5: Compression of air for half of stroke length up to TDC.
5-6: Fuel at high pressure is injected to combustion chamber by increasing pressure.
6-1: Fuel combustion by increasing further pressure.
This cycle is more efficient then Otto cycle as it expands as in diesel engines
generating more power but compression as in petrol engines taking less power. This
cycle has high working pressure as hydrogen is injected at high pressure and after that
creating high pressure by combustion of hydrogen which leads to more power output.
ADVANTAGE OF TWO STROKE HYDROGEN ENGINE

1) Two-stroke engines have the potential for about twice the power in the same size
because there are twice as many power strokes per revolution.
2) Power output is high as the engine is running at high RPM .Fast completion of
cycle because of rapid combustion of hydrogen then ordinary fuels.
3) No compressor is needed to compress hydrogen to high pressure.
4) Pollution is zero as combusted product is water only.
5) High efficiency compared with present four stroke and two stroke engines.
