A. Understanding Cultures and Their Diversity

1. Culture in America
The United States of America in the early days of its members carried
out polarization for immigrants who came from all over the world. The
immigrants who came to America, and then chose to settle and become
Americans, were asked by the government not to leave the community and
continue to practice it during their stay in America. This makes the culture of
the United States multicultural. Various kinds of world culture are mixed,
country but culture and cowboys generally become one of the famous
symbols and characteristics of America.
The United States community acknowledges that they do not have a
special culture down, and also considers that culture is a culture to "try to be
the best". Because there are no responsible factors, religions and cultures,
people in these countries believe that someone who is trying to be the best
can be the best.
 2. Culture in Indonesia
Cultural diversity is a necessity that exists in Indonesia. The existence
of Indonesian cultural diversity cannot be denied. There are so many types
of differences that the Indonesian people have, ranging from ethnicity,
culture, religious race, and many others.
With a population of more than 250 million people spread throughout
the archipelago in Indonesia. They inhabit areas with diverse geographical
conditions but with the same climate. T he assimilation of Indonesian culture
is also strongly influenced by the meeting of local culture with outside
culture. It is also a factor in Indonesia's cultural diversity.
Apart from outside culture, the development and spread of religion
also influence and support the development of Indonesian culture. Indonesia
can be said to be one country that has a high level of heterogeneity
The advantage of the Indonesian people from other nations is that they
have a very varied culture. And no less interesting and important is that,
socially and culturally and politically, the Indonesian people have an
interesting historical dynamics. One of them is the relationship between
indigenous Indonesians and traders from Gujarat and the Middle East in
building Indonesian cultural civilization.

B. Analyzing Cultures and Their Diversity

1. Food
About eating food, most of Indonesians eat the same food every day
for lunch and dinner. For dinner, they usually warm the food that was
cooked at noon instead of making more. On the other hand, Americans eat a
variety of foods each day and prefer eat fast food like pizza, sandwiches,
pasta, and etc. Because they are really busy by their activities.
 About the taste of food, most of Indonesians like a hot and spicy taste
in their food. Because in Indonesia have so many spices. So, most of the
traditional food in Indonesia have a strong taste especially spicy taste.
Meanwhile, Americans prefer a sweet taste or a little bit salty in their food.
Because in America always use cheese in their meal and they used bread
instead of rice. It is because in America there is no rice. They also admit to
eat food that isn’t warm, like sandwiches. They usually don’t make their
own food but they buy it on street or canteen.
Americans eat use eating tools, like spoon, fork, knife, and so on.
Because they like eating meat. While in Indonesia, some people also eat use
eating tools, but in Indonesian original culture itself, they use bare hands for
eating. It is also because most of Indonesians are muslim, and it is some of
muslim tuition.
Americans use their left hand as often as they use their right one
includes when they are eating. While in Indonesia, since most Indonesians
consider manner as the important one, they think that using left hand for
good activities such as eating is not allowed.
2. Time
In Indonesia well-known less appreciate the time that there is
sometimes not appropriate appointment time. They also sometimes waste
time and not discipline, therefore they are often late. While Americans quite
appreciate the time, they never ignore the time. Time is very important for
them and they are very on time. Because they always keep in their mind that
time is money.
3. The behavior of their speak
Indonesians usually being complicated when they speak. Commonly,
they start a communication by lip service. Because Indonesians have known
 as a friendly people and they have a good manners. On the other hand,
Americans usually speak directly to the point when they say something.
Because they don’t like being complicated or lip service. They really
appreciate the time and manage the time for other schedule.
4. Personality
Americans well known of being individualistic people. They are very
individualistic, namely that people who belong to this group have a egoist,
do not like mutual help, not to be family, and always keep their self when
they meet with someone they just met .they also known arrogant, open-
minded, efficient and practical, they only know their country (us-centered),
easy going, straight to forward and straight to the point. On the other side,
people in Indonesia have caring more than people in America. Most
Indonesians live in rural area which caring level is still high.
5. Education
Level of education in America is high. Americans consider education
as important thing. They think that by having higher education they will
have no poor life. Most of them go to college. While in Indonesia, education
is still low, especially in rural area. Distribution of education has no balance
between in city and rural area. People in rural area think that having higher
education can’t ensure to have good life. The most important thing for them
is having good skill which it can be got even they have no higher education.
6. Social life
Social life in America is uncontrolled. Living in the same house and
making love before marriage, and kissing in the public are no big deals in
America. Almost all people there have ever done these things. They think
that it is their right to do those. While in Indonesia, these things are taboo
and such an improper habit because manner is number one for Indonesians.
7. The way to greet other people
Indonesians do handshake and nod the head each other. Sometime
there is some people do handshake without touching between female and
male.because most of Indonesian people are muslim, so the female do not
touch the male when they shake hand. Commonly, Americans give kiss or
handshake for business relationship. And for young people they usually
touch their shoulder or just say hello and eye contact.
8. The behavior of take a bath time
Indonesians do it twice a day, morning and afternoon. Because take a
bath in the morning make their body feel fresh to start the activity, and for
the afternoon is to refresh after the whole activity they do. Meanwhile,
Americans rarely take a bath. Commonly they just wash their face and brush
their teeth. Because of the laziness to get up early and it is also because they
really busy of their activity.
9. Fashion
In Indonesian’s view point, fashion represents how the characteristic of
somebody is. It’s a symbol of him/her personality, age, or social standing.
Before choosing their clothes, they must think over your event, the situation,
or your role. They will get complaint if wear inappropriate fashion. Wearing
sexy clothes is considered rather taboo and impolite because Indonesia has
strong eastern-ethical and influence of islamic value.unlike in Indonesia,
people in the usa can choose what clothes they want to wear freely. An old
woman can wear a vivid clothes with many bright accessories. A boy may
change his hair in a unique style. A girl may draw a tattoo in her skin.
Nobody will complain what your fashion is.
10.Religion
 Having a religion is so essential for people in Indonesia. However,
Indonesia is not a country of specific religion. Indonesian can choose freely
their religions such us islam, cristian, catholic, hinduism, or buddhism. They
usually have same religion with their parents. Indonesian children get
religion education in school as a subject and in their home from their parents.
It’s polite to talk about religion even you can ask to someone, “what’s your
religion?” It’s also common to invite someone to go to a church or a mosque.
The culture is so different with America. Religion is a private thing there.
You can’t ask directly, “what’s your religion?” The question are really
impolite like asking weight. When you fill out an official document, there is
no question about your religion even in the population survey. They have
absolute freedom to choose religion or pray. However, they can’t bother
others who are praying. Attacking other holy places is really prohibition.
They have to respect to all people even if they have different religious view.

C. Synthesizing Cultures and Their Diversity

1. Fashion
Nowadays, most of Indonesian fashion styles have mixed with
American fashion style. Indonesian prefer to wear American fashion styles,
such as jeans,
2. Music
Start from 1990s original American music, hip hop and rap spread
everywhere, includes in Indonesia. Some Indonesians become hip hop
rapper, such as J. Flow, Iwa K, Saykoji, Rich Brian, Young Lex, Ramengvrl
and so on. For example Iwa K. Iwa K crossovers varieties of music genres,
includes hip hop and rap from the lyric not only use Indonesian but also
 American English. Moreover, Indonesia has bahasa daerah rappers, such as
Sundanis, and kojek.
3. Food
Some American junk food spread world wide, includes in Indonesia,
such as MC Donalds, KFC, Texas, Starbucks, Burger King and so on.
