Problem Statement:

The continuous growth of the customer's higher end requirements and regulations which lead and to
introduction of electronics control software complexities, invokes a vital role of testing in the software
development process. Attending the existing issues and the incorporation of new technological solution for
them with in the short market time, requires a testing technique before without moving to field for final
validation. This sets foot print for the Model Based Testing in terms of feasible solution. During software
development process where one module has undergone different level of testing and another one is still
under development, following the Standard V-model helps in the detection and removal of bugs during
early stage of development. This minimizes the major field recalls in terms of type, frequency and criticality.
This paper talks about how TAFE, a major agricultural machinery Original Equipment manufacturer (OEM)
used model based design and testing techniques in the development of tractor embedded control systems
during this rivalry time among the other global tractor player

Abstract: In the recent years the use of agricultural tractor has been extended to many operations other
than agriculture like hauling, earth moving and quarrying. Looking tractor as a versatile machine and to
meet the continuous improvements customer's requirement in terms of fuel economy, emission, ride
comforts and vehicle performance the need of embedded control systems for the design of these
improvements controls has been potentially increased in past few years in the automotive industries. Due
to quality , high end requirements and short market time the automotive industry is are shifting toward the
model based design for the design of controls and auto code generation. The replacement of these controls
from mechanical to electronics system make it safety critical and , so before moving to the field software
needs rigorous testing well before in the lab for ensuring its quality and reliability and to eliminate any design
errors during its development phase. So this paper presents the Testing, Model based Verification and
Validation approach for the control strategy of tractor's embedded controls system. The approach hovers
around the automated testing at different testing levels viz. unit, module, integration and Model-In-The-Loop
(MIL) using simulink test, simulink verification and validation and simulink report generation tool kit.
Following Hardware-In-The-Loop( HIL) as a system level testing eliminates the frequency of going to field
for error detection and system performance optimization.

Eventually it is seen that use of this tools greatly reduced the time, effort and cost required during
traditional(manual) testing and improves the overall testing experience, process and quality of software.
