Cook and Care "Walk-A-Thon"– Sunday, October 17, 2010

The planning committee of the fourteenth-annual Cook and Care "Walk-A-
Thon" has announced the dedication of the event to the memory of Blanche B.
Baldwin, DESK's 2010 President of the Board of Directors.

The Walk, to take place at 1:00 p.m. in Edgerton Park on Sunday, October 17,
raises money for four New Haven-area charities: the Community Soup Kitchen,
the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, FISH of Greater New Haven, and
Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers.

Blanche Baldwin, who passed away on July 6, was one of this event's staunchest
supporters and a hardworking committee member of the Walk. Blanche gave
generously of her time, talent, and energy to numerous groups and organizations
in the New Haven area, including First Church of Christ (Center Church) in New
Haven, the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Columbus House, Ward Hetman
House Museum, West Haven Retired Teachers Association, and the West Haven
Historical Society. She appreciated having the opportunity to serve others,
especially those in need, through feeding the hungry and raising funds for
charitable organizations.

Blanche was a past recipient of a West Haven Board of Education award for years
of Excellence in Teaching. As an alumnus of Southern Connecticut State
University, she established an SCSU scholarship for aspiring teachers. Blanche
was greatly loved and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In tribute to this gifted, caring woman, the committee extends an invitation to

everyone to participate.

For more information on how to participate in or support the Walk please call
203-624-6426 or go to www.cookandcare.org.

Ride To End Hunger 2010
DESK would like to thank all of the riders and supporters of this year’s Ride To
End Hunger. Even though the weather was tenuous, the ride was beautiful and
everyone enjoyed the great BBQ and raffle following the ride at Lighthouse Point.
Please check www.ridetoendhunger.com for photos from the ride this year &
other years.

Mark your calendars now, the 6th Annual Ride To End Hunger 2011
will be in Sunday, September 10, 2011. Next year the Ride BBQ will be in
the Carousel House at Lighthouse Point so the wind will not be an issue but we
can still enjoy the beach and harbor views.

DESK would like to thank the sponsors of this year's ride:

S&V Screen printing, especially Ralph and Ralph, who have produced our
fun t-shirts;
TYCO Printing in New Haven for years of great service to DESK; and
Captain Quig's Shore Shack, especially Scot and his staff, for preparing food
for the BBQ at no cost to DESK.

Thanks to Paul DeRose and Autotote Enterprises for use of the Sports
Haven parking lot for yet another year!

Big thanks go to Chuck Cheslock for donating and setting up our tents. And for
Dave Roberts for helping him and getting the new DESK generator going!

The music rocked thanks to DJ Matt from Dark Entertainment!

Thanks again to all the Common Ground High School students who helped
serve coffee and donuts this year and helped sell Ride T-shirts!

Thanks to DESK volunteers Kiele, Taylor, Jasmin and Michelle for helping
with a variety of tasks during the BBQ.

Thanks to DESK Board members Hans Andersson, Tammy George, Scot

McLean, Ming Toy Taylor and Glen Meyerowitz, as well as Yale Hunger
Heroes for helping all day.

Great food served and prepared by DESK’s Director of Operation, Linda

Carbone.
Thanks to our new DESK staff and long time volunteer Henry Ford for helping
with food transportation and security!

Yale Habitat for Humanity paints DESK Dining Hall

Thanks to Kenny and the members of the Yale Habitat for Humanity. They
recently painted the big white columns in the DESK Dining Hall. This same
group painted the entire Dining Hall in the spring. We are really lucky to have
them volunteer their time and they do a great job!

West Rock Health & Care Center & Kate Sacks

DESK recently picked up a wonderful donation of food from the unfortunate
closing of West Rock Health Care Center. Kate Sacks coordinated a huge
pickup of food for DESK which included frozen fish, chicken, dairy products and
fruits.

Roast Beef Nights- New Haven County Bar Association, Young

Lawyers section
These nights are all sponsored by The New Haven County Bar Association,
Young Lawyers Section (YLS). The YLS has supported our organization in a
variety of ways last year and this year. Starting this past September, the YLS has
been sponsoring a "Roast Beef Night" for DESK guests on the third Wednesday of
each month.

Quick Notes
The DESK Sunday Kosher meal at Silfka ends after 15 years
The Joseph A. Sifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale will not be hosting a kosher
meal for DESK on Sundays in the 2010-2011 academic year. They have decided
to start serving students on Sunday nights. Kosher meals at Silfka for DESK have
a rich history since 1995 and will be missed. The Sunday meal will continue to be
served at 311 Temple Street at 5 PM for the entire year. Thank you Slifka for
years of kosher meals for our clients at DESK!

Blanche's Buddies: New Food Program for Seniors

This fall, DESK will begin a new program for at-risk seniors who already make
use of DESK's direct food services. The program will help seniors supplement
their daily food intake with food nutritionally matched for each senior. DESK will
make food available to seniors two to three times per week to compensate for
regular kitchen closures.

Members of the Ladies Home Missionary Society of Center Church on the Green
are helping to sponsor this new DESK program for seniors. DESK is naming it in
honor of Blanche Baldwin who was a longtime member of both the Ladies Home
Missionary Society and DESK's Board of Directors, a regular DESK volunteer,
and a friend to all. The program excited Blanche, who, before she fell ill, looked
forward to implementing it in the fall.

Anyone wishing to support this specific DESK program may send donations to:

Thunder's Pantry for Pet Food

DESK is continuing "Thunder's Pantry", its pet-food pantry . The pantry currently
has cat, dog, gerbil, and bird food. The cat and dog food comes in both wet and
dry varieties. If you or someone you know needs help with pet food, please call
203-809-8770 to make an appointment to pick up pet food. Pet food may also be
picked up at the weekly DESK Food Pantry, every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at 311
Temple Street, New Haven. Please note that DESK cannot deliver pet food.

If you would like to donate pet food items to Thunder's Pantry, please refer to
DESK's regular food drop-off schedule or call Linda at 203-809-8770.

Thanksgiving 2010
DESK is in the midst of planning the annual ICM Thanksgiving Dinner. This year
we anticipate preparing over 700 meals onsite at the DESK kitchen in the Center
Church Parish House at 311 Temple Street, and delivering over 600 meals to the
homebound in the community. This is an all week event for DESK staff and its
many volunteers.

This event has also given members of ICM congregations an opportunity to

volunteer their time and efforts to the Thanksgiving Day meals. DESK Chef Linda
Carbone and DESK Coordinator of Evening Meals , Andrew Bambrook will run
the dinner and provide oversight for volunteers on Wednesday and Thanksgiving
Day. Rev. Dr. Sandra Olsen will give the blessing this year at the 12 noon
Thanksgiving Day dinner at DESK dining hall. The rest of the people preparing
and delivering the meals that day will be volunteers, and we are counting on
members of ICM congregations to help as in years past!!

For details on how you can help DESK this Thanksgiving please check the DESK
web site (www.downtowneveningsoupkitchen) and in a future email
announcement later this month!

Information
Food Donations
You may drop off food donations at 311 Temple Street between 1:00 p.m. and
4:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. Please call the kitchen (203-772-3400)
before you come to make sure that DESK staff will be present—please do not
leave food donations outside or on steps!

Please remember that all of DESK's offices and operations are closed on Fridays
and Saturdays. Volunteers will not be accepted on these days, nor will deliveries
or food donations be received. Volunteer calls should only be made Sunday
through Thursday.

Volunteering
The fall is DESK's busiest volunteer season. Please be patient—Linda will get back
to you and do her best to schedule you or your group! If you need to do
community service to meet obligations for your school or legal situation, please
contact Linda as soon as possible. Do not wait until the last minute, as we cannot
always guarantee availability at your preferred times and dates.

All volunteers & groups must first email linda@downtowneveningsoupkitchen.com.

To schedule your group, please narrow down when you would like to come, and
then have one person contact Linda.

Please fill out the Volunteer Waiver located on the “volunteering” page under
Serve with us.

We cannot accept
» groups over ten people
» groups on the days we are closed (Fridays and Saturdays)
» any walk-in volunteers
» unscheduled friends and tagalongs of scheduled volunteers.
» some community-service and court-appointed volunteers

The DESK kitchen is professionally run and commercially licensed.

Volunteers play a vital role in DESK's operations, and we appreciate every person
that lends a hand, but we also must run a clean operation to protect guests,
volunteers, and staff. Please observe the following rules for safe and sanitary
volunteering:

1. Do not wear open toe shoes or loose long hair (tie it back and be willing to wear
a hair net). Choose clothes that you do not mind getting dirty.
2. If possible, leave bags, purses, and backpacks behind, as we have little room to
store things.
3. Wash hands immediately upon entering the kitchen, then keep on the plastic
gloves we provide, changing pairs as necessary.
4. Stay home when you are ill or not feeling well to prevent the spread of disease.
5. Come on time to the left basement entrance of 311 Temple Street (we do not
serve at Slifka during the summer), and be ready to stay until cleanup is finished.
