Saturday DESK Meal Returns – Saturday, October 9, 2010
The Yale Hunger Heroes and Kitchen to Kitchen, both Yale student groups,
will be staffing a DESK Saturday evening meal at the site of the Friday meal:
United Parish House at 323 Temple Street. Thanks to United Parish House for
donating the space for this Saturday meal!
Yale Hunger Heroes, led by Ming Toy Taylor and Glen Meyorwitz, with help
from Alexandra Hess and Lexie Berwick are ready to put Yale student
volunteers to work for DESK. These students not only coordinate the entire
evening meals but obtain rescued food from Yale Dinning Services and perform
every task necessary to produce an evening meal with supervision from DESK
staff. This meal will operate on Saturdays at 5 PM, which is the same time as
Sundays.
Any Yale students interested in volunteering for Friday or Saturday Soup Kitchen
tasks please email: alexandra.hess@yale.edu
The Walk, to take place at 1:00 p.m. in Edgerton Park on Sunday, October 17,
raises money for four New Haven-area charities: the Community Soup Kitchen,
the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, FISH of Greater New Haven, and
Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers.
Blanche Baldwin, who passed away on July 6, was one of this event's staunchest
supporters and a hardworking committee member of the Walk. Blanche gave
generously of her time, talent, and energy to numerous groups and organizations
in the New Haven area, including First Church of Christ (Center Church) in New
Haven, the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Columbus House, Ward Hetman
House Museum, West Haven Retired Teachers Association, and the West Haven
Historical Society. She appreciated having the opportunity to serve others,
especially those in need, through feeding the hungry and raising funds for
charitable organizations.
Blanche was a past recipient of a West Haven Board of Education award for years
of Excellence in Teaching. As an alumnus of Southern Connecticut State
University, she established an SCSU scholarship for aspiring teachers. Blanche
was greatly loved and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
For more information on how to participate in or support the Walk please call

It is part of the mission of the Slate Voice Studio to use music and the arts to give
back to our community. The dedication of the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen
to serving the less fortunate members of our community with dignity and respect
is an inspiration to us all. For this reason, the Slate Voice Studio will donate all of
the proceeds to this event to DESK.

Mark your calendars now, the 6th Annual Ride To End Hunger 2011
will be in Sunday, September 10, 2011. Next year the Ride BBQ will be in
the Carousel House at Lighthouse Point so the wind will not be an issue but we
can still enjoy the beach and harbor views.
Thanks to Paul DeRose and Autotote Enterprises for use of the Sports
Haven parking lot for yet another year!
Big thanks go to Chuck Cheslock for donating and setting up our tents. And for
Dave Roberts for helping him and getting the new DESK generator going!
Thanks again to all the Common Ground High School students who helped
serve coffee and donuts this year and helped sell Ride T-shirts!
Thanks to DESK volunteers Kiele, Taylor, Jasmin and Michelle for helping
with a variety of tasks during the BBQ.
Quick Notes
The DESK Sunday Kosher meal at Silfka ends after 15 years
The Joseph A. Sifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale will not be hosting a kosher
meal for DESK on Sundays in the 2010-2011 academic year. They have decided
to start serving students on Sunday nights. Kosher meals at Silfka for DESK have
a rich history since 1995 and will be missed. The Sunday meal will continue to be
served at 311 Temple Street at 5 PM for the entire year. Thank you Slifka for
years of kosher meals for our clients at DESK!
Members of the Ladies Home Missionary Society of Center Church on the Green
are helping to sponsor this new DESK program for seniors. DESK is naming it in
honor of Blanche Baldwin who was a longtime member of both the Ladies Home
Missionary Society and DESK's Board of Directors, a regular DESK volunteer,
and a friend to all. The program excited Blanche, who, before she fell ill, looked
forward to implementing it in the fall.
Anyone wishing to support this specific DESK program may send donations to:

If you would like to donate pet food items to Thunder's Pantry, please refer to
DESK's regular food drop-off schedule or call Linda at 203-809-8770.
Thanksgiving 2010
DESK is in the midst of planning the annual ICM Thanksgiving Dinner. This year
we anticipate preparing over 700 meals onsite at the DESK kitchen in the Center
Church Parish House at 311 Temple Street, and delivering over 600 meals to the
homebound in the community. This is an all week event for DESK staff and its
many volunteers.
For details on how you can help DESK this Thanksgiving please check the DESK
web site (www.downtowneveningsoupkitchen) and in a future email
announcement later this month!
Current Needs
Pantry Supplies
During the fall months, we have an increasing need for certain food items for use

prefer generic brands.

Information
Food Donations
You may drop off food donations at 311 Temple Street between 1:00 p.m. and
4:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. Please call the kitchen (203-772-3400)
before you come to make sure that DESK staff will be present—please do not
leave food donations outside or on steps!
Please remember that all of DESK's offices and operations are closed on Fridays
and Saturdays. Volunteers will not be accepted on these days, nor will deliveries
or food donations be received. Volunteer calls should only be made Sunday
through Thursday.
Volunteering
The fall is DESK's busiest volunteer season. Please be patient—Linda will get back
to you and do her best to schedule you or your group! If you need to do
community service to meet obligations for your school or legal situation, please
contact Linda as soon as possible. Do not wait until the last minute, as we cannot
always guarantee availability at your preferred times and dates.
To schedule your group, please narrow down when you would like to come, and
then have one person contact Linda.
Please fill out the Volunteer Waiver located on the “volunteering” page under
Serve with us.
We cannot accept
» groups over ten people
» groups on the days we are closed (Fridays and Saturdays)
» any walk-in volunteers
» unscheduled friends and tagalongs of scheduled volunteers.
» some community-service and court-appointed volunteers
1. Do not wear open toe shoes or loose long hair (tie it back and be willing to wear
a hair net). Choose clothes that you do not mind getting dirty.
2. If possible, leave bags, purses, and backpacks behind, as we have little room to
store things.
3. Wash hands immediately upon entering the kitchen, then keep on the plastic
gloves we provide, changing pairs as necessary.
4. Stay home when you are ill or not feeling well to prevent the spread of disease.
5. Come on time to the left basement entrance of 311 Temple Street (we do not
serve at Slifka during the summer), and be ready to stay until cleanup is finished.
