5 Questions-Introduction of Computational Fluid Dynamics in a Thermal Fluid Lab

1. In paragraph 3; When solving for NTU or ε for counter-flow, what equations must be used when
C* is equal to 1?
𝑁𝑇𝑈 𝜀
Answer: 𝜀= 𝑁𝑇𝑈 =
1−𝑁𝑇𝑈 1−𝜀

2. In paragraph 5; Table 1; using experimental data 1; what is the NTU and effectiveness for the
given conditions. Assume Cp= 1.0
𝑚 𝐶𝑝𝑐 (𝑇𝑐2− 𝑇𝑐1 ) 𝜀
Answer: 𝜀 = (𝑚 𝑁𝑇𝑈 =
𝐶𝑝)min(𝑇ℎ1 −𝑇𝑐1 ) 1−𝜀
2.0×2.0×(78−61) 0.151
𝜀= 𝑁𝑇𝑈 =
3.0×2.0×(136−61) 1−0.151

𝜀 = 0.151 𝑁𝑇𝑈 = 0.178

3. In paragraph 6; For the Model development in STAR-CCM+, what are the general steps used to
develop a CFD Model?

Answer:

 Define the physical problem

 Create the Geometry
 Create the regions
 Generate the Mesh
 Define the physics
 Define the Boundaries
 Prepare for analysis
 Run the Simulation
 Analyze the Results
 Validation Process

4. In paragraph 3; What equations are used for a parallel pipe heat exchanger?

Answer:

 Heat transfer rate

𝑞 = 𝑈𝐴∆𝑇𝑙𝑚
 Logarithmic Mean Temperature Difference

(𝑇ℎ2 − 𝑇𝑐2 ) − (𝑇ℎ1 − 𝑇𝑐1 )

∆𝑇𝑙𝑚 =
𝑇 − 𝑇𝑐2
ln( ℎ2 )
𝑇ℎ1 − 𝑇𝑐1
 𝜀 = 𝑁𝑇𝑈 𝑀𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑑
𝑞𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙
𝜀=
𝑞𝑚𝑎𝑥

𝑞𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 = (𝑚𝐶𝑝)𝑐(𝑇𝑐𝑜 − 𝑇𝑐𝑖 ) = (𝑚 𝐶𝑝)ℎ(𝑇ℎ𝑖 − 𝑇ℎ𝑜 )

𝑞𝑚𝑎𝑥 = (𝑚𝐶𝑝)𝑚𝑖𝑛(𝑇ℎ𝑖 − 𝑇𝑐𝑖 ) = 𝐶𝑚𝑖𝑛(𝑇ℎ𝑖 − 𝑇𝑐𝑖 )

Cmin refers to lowest heat capacity (m Cp) of the 2 fluids.

𝐶𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝐶∗ =
𝐶𝑚𝑎𝑥
𝑈𝐴
𝑁𝑇𝑈 =
𝐶𝑚𝑖𝑛

1−𝑒 (−𝑁𝑇𝑈(1+𝐶 )) 1
 𝜀= 𝑁𝑇𝑈 = ln[1 − 𝜀(1 + 𝐶 ∗ )]
1+𝐶 ∗ 1+𝐶 ∗

5. In paragraph 1; What is the writer’s purpose of his paper?

Answer:

To introduce students to CFD in a laboratory course and terminology associated with CFD. To give
insight into basic principals of CFD, recognize the quality of a CFD model by understanding the
concept of validation and realize the benefits of having a validated model. The approach also allows
comparison of experimental results with CFD results and for the students to understand that the
CFD model is a powerful tool in educational process of learning engineering concepts.
