Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes…

Introduction

Education is vital for every man in this world, and it has become a right

of every person to go to school, attain schooling, and explore the groves of

Academe. The country is, aside from being financially or economically challenged,

is also challenged educationally. In order to combat this problem, the teachers and

instructors all around the country tried to come up with many ideas on how to

teach their students in a short span of time yet in a fruitful and successful way.

According to the Department of Education’s Order 35, also known as the

Learning Action Cell (LAC) in 2016, successful teachers are the following based

on their research:

o They posses a good grasp of the content which they can consequently

convert to sound learning objectives.

o They can make instructional decisions on the basis of formative

assessment results.

o They promote sincerely their students’ learning and holistic

development.

o They are professional and ethical in the conduct of their work. Since

teaching is concerned more to both students and teachers, student’s

effective learning comes with the effective teaching of the instructors.

The Department of Education launched this order so that it is possible to

conquer the remaining gap of 2% to the deteriorating literacy rate of the Philippines

at 97.95%. (United Nations Human Development Report, 2016) The department

simply wants to equate the country’s rate of literacy to the three countries, namely

Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia respectively, with the highest rates in Southeast

Asia, or perhaps to surpass it.

The DepEd instructed the secretaries, undersecretaries, directors,

superintendents, school heads, and all other school staffs concerned this order for

producing effective students by means of giving them the best education – by

teaching the youth effectively.

Teaching skills of the educators must be effective for the students in

order to work cooperatively in this field, but what are the teaching skills?

Teachers have a direct responsibility to shape a student’s academic

performance, and are the most important school based factor in their education

(Rockoff, 2004; Rivkin, Hanushek). This is why it is important to examine which

teacher characteristics may be related to students’ academic performance.

Considering which teacher characteristics produce the best student academic

performance at the senior secondary school level can help the school in identifying

unique ways to increase student performance with the teacher resources available

to them.

According to Thompson, Greer ( 2001 ), there are twelve characteristics that

are central to that students as good and effective teaching skills which connect to
the caring for the students, both academically and personally and strengthen recent

indicators for academic performance. These characteristics are displaying fairness,

having a positive outlook, being prepared using a personal touch, respecting

students, maintaining high expectations, possessing a sense of humor and many

more.

The overall purpose of the study is to understand the impact of effective

teaching skills in the academic performance of the senior high school student in

AMA Fairview Computer College. Analyzing the effectiveness and efficiency of the

teacher in molding the student to be knowledgeable and rational thinker inside

and outside of the school. To explore the different teaching methods and the most

effective way of teaching.

Background of the study

The education system of the Philippines has been highly influenced by the

country’s colonial history. That history has included periods of Spanish, American

and Japanese rule and occupation. Spanish education played a major role in that

transformation. The oldest universities, colleges, and vocational schools, dating as

far back as the late 16th century were created during the colonial period, as

well as the “first modern public education system” in Asia, established in 1863.

By the time Spain was replaced by the United States as the colonial power,

Filipinos were among the most educated people in all of Asia, boasting one of the

highest literacy rates in that continent. Simultaneously, the knowledge of Filipinos

about neighboring cultures receded. ( The friars, Coleman, 2009)

The most important and lasting contributions came during America’s

occupation of the country, which began in 1898. It was during that period that

“English was introduced as the primary language of instruction” and a system

of public education was first established — a system modelled after the United

States school system and administered by the newly established Department of

Instruction.

The United States left a lasting impression on the Philippine school system.

Several colleges and universities were founded with the goal of educating the

nation’s teachers. In 1908, the University of the Philippines was chartered,

representing the first comprehensive public university in the nation’s history.

Like the United States, the Philippine nation has an extensive and highly

inclusive system of education, including higher education. In the present day, the

United States continues to influence the Philippine education system, as many of

the country’s teachers and professors have earned advanced degrees from United

States universities.

Philippine educational system during the Japanese period. Japanese

education policies were embodied in the Military Order no.2 (1942). The Philippine

Commission of Education , Health and Public Welfare. Schools were reopened in

June 1942 with 300,00 students. Focus of their curriculum is that Tagalog,

Philippine History, and Character Education. Love for work and dignity for labor

was emphasized. There was a spread Elementary and Vocational education.

Nippongo was used and the Japanese tried to stop the Filipino people from using

the English language.

Although the Philippine system of education has long served as a model

for other Southeast Asian countries, in recent years, that system has deteriorated.

This is especially true in the more remote and poverty-stricken regions of the

country. While Manila, the capital and largest city in the Philippines, boasts a

primary school completion rate of nearly 100 percent, other areas of the country

including Mindanao and Eastern Visayas, have a primary school completion rate

of only 30 percent or less. Not surprisingly, students who hail from Philippine

urban areas tend to score much higher in subjects such as mathematics and

science than students in the more rural areas of the country.

With this in mind, these two colonial periods in our country have the same

achievement that they both attained in different times for the sake of the Philippines

— high literacy rates. Why did we have those high numbers with their help? It is

because of their effective teaching skills that resulted in effective education systems.

Excellence in academic life demands high level of intelligence; but in addition

to intelligence, recent studies have indicated that there are other factors that can

be useful predictors of academic performance ( Busato &Prins, et.al, Hamaker, 1998

One of the factors is teachers’ characteristics. Teachers cannot be undermined

in the discussion of knowledge transfer or education in every day. Teachers are very

instrumental to the transfer of knowledge. The statistically significant relationship

between teachers’ characteristics and student academic performance ( Ali, 2001)

Statement of the problem

This study aims to discern the impact of effective teaching skill in the

academic performance of the Senior High School Student in AMA Fairview

Computer College.

5. What is the significance of having this kind of the study?

Scope and Delimitation

The general purpose of the study is to understand the impact of the

effective teaching skill and understand also the different teaching skills. The study

will focused only on the Senior High School in AMA Fairview Computer College.

The number of the respondents are only limited since there are a lots of Senior

High School. The researcher needs only an enough number of the students to

respond on the survey questionnaire due to the time constraints.

The primary data gathering method in this study is to interview some

respondents based on their experienced; what is the effect of having a

knowledgeable teacher and have an effective style of teaching in the academic

performance of the student. This research is designed to give a favorable viewpoint

on every teaching skills. In this case the researcher is aware that there is lot of

method in teaching.

Significance of the study

This study perceived to be significance and relevance to the following:

Students. When they come to the college and struggle their first year. In

most cases it is due to how they study. This study provides them on the

relationship of their learning strategies and study the skill to their academic

performance and answer what is the best way to study.

Administration. This will serve as their bases on how the student learn.

Hence, this provides them a lot of tactics and strategies regarding on their academic

performances.
Teacher. It would guide them in helping students to identify and select what

learning strategies and study skills they need to strengthen or alter to be able to

help themselves in improving their academic performance.

Researchers. Will be the instrument for the student to help them and make

an analysis on how hey will improved their skill in terms of their academic

performances.

Future Researcher. This will serve as their reference to their inquiry

regarding on the contribution of learning strategies and study skills to academic

competencies of the students.

Conceptual Framework

The focus of the study was undertaken by the following conceptual framework

shown in Figure 1 which has three part process: the Input, Process, and Output.

This are the question that the researcher aims to answer about the impact

of the effective teaching skill in the Senior High School in AMA Fairview Computer
