Energy efficient buildings enjoy substantial energy cost savings compared to the average building because
the energy cost is often the largest component of a building's total operating cost. With elevators and
escalators accounting between 5% and 15% of the building sector’s use of electricity, green innovations
and other energy saving initiatives can offer large reductions in the energy footprint of our built environment.
Schindler high-rise elevators are continuously analyzed and improved regarding energy efficiency and
applied materials. Over the past 10 years, systematic product comparisons, careful selections of design
materials and systems’ improvements have enabled us to decrease energy consumption in these segments
by 40%. However, during the lifecycle of an elevator, it is the utilization (daily operation and standby of
elevators) phase across 20-30 years cycle that has the most potential for reducing the environmental
impact.
Schindler offers gearless high efficient drives with best-in-class Power Factor 1 (PF1) inverters and
THD (total harmonic distortion) of < = 3%
Both technologies care for smooth, stable and safe rides and have a low energy demand during peak
and ride phases
the PF 1 inverter is able to regenerate clean energy back into the building grid; the regenerated energy
could then be used by other elevators in a group, other appliances in the building (via the buildings
electrical grid)
Thanks to high-efficiency regenerative drives the elevator uses about 30% less energy than
comparable elevators. During daily operation, the elevators travel in up and down direction with
different loads in the car. The counterweight is designed to balance the weight of the empty car plus
half of the car's rated maximum load (rated maximum number of passengers). Depending on the travel
direction and the load (actual number of passengers) in the car, the elevator drive operates either in
motor mode (yellow arrows in image below) or in generator mode (green arrows in image below).
Industry-leading technology such as permanent-magnet drive minimizes the energy consumption of the
drive at the highest-possible mechanical and electrical efficiency.
Optimized Standby Mode
The elevator system detects components such as car lighting, fans, etc. which are not in use and
activates the sleep mode.
Traditionally during off-peak times, all the elevators in the group are still in operation. This means that
elevators will do many trips to transport only a few passengers, leading to low efficiency. Use of energy is
particularly high in lightly loaded elevator cars because of the large load offset between the car and
counterweight.
The unique PORT Technology energy control ECO MODE allows the average acceptable
waiting time to be defined for a specific building. Whenever the current and expected future
waiting times are below the specified level, ECO will set non-essential elevators into standby
mode.
Thanks to the reduced number of elevator trips and due to the improved balance of the
elevators, it should also save energy for the trips undertaken. The use of this approach for
heavy and light traffic can provide significant energy savings throughout the day; multiplied over
the course of a year it becomes phenomenal. Since ECO Mode dynamically monitors the traffic
situation in a building, a high level of service is assured at all times.
ECO Mode optimizes the energy consumption of the entire elevator system. It can achieve up to
40% energy savings.
Future proof
Schindler places great emphasis on the entire system Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) when
designing elevators. All Schindler high-rise components are designed for backwards
compatibility, where they can be replaced or newly installed into existing installations, which
increases the lifetime of the elevator system. The clever machine design of Schindler elevators
allows all parts to be replaced for repair and modernization, which affords you material savings,
energy saving and increases the life of the machine. With our compact high-reliability
components, we cut maintenance and energy costs to a minimum.
Certification
At Schindler, we support our partners in designing and building green projects by providing
innovative and energy-efficient solutions. evident in landmark projects across the region, such as
International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong, Asia Square Tower 1 and Marina Bay Financial
Center (MBFC) in Singapore, contributing to the prestigious Hong Kong BEAM and Singapore
BCA Green Mark certification awarded to these projects for their outstanding commitment to
developing sustainable and environmentally-friendly buildings.
Schindler high-rise products contribute to achieve all global building certificates, such as...
LEED comprises a suite of rating systems for the design, construction and
operation of high performance green buildings.
BREEAM is the world’s longest established and most widely used method
of assessing, rating and certifying the sustainability of buildings.
Schindler considers our high-rise elevators as engineered systems, rather than “products”, and
our main operating philosophy is; once installed, the core components will be used for the life of
the building. However, during this operating life, certain components will be changed throughout
a 20-30 year modernization cycle. While it is feasible to specify certain features and attributes
of the individual energy-efficient components (as shown throughout this document), we
recognize that the actual electricity consumption will depend on various factors when the
building is operational such as floor usage, tenants and visitor flow pattern, occupancy, usage
schedules etc.
