Journal #4 Ethical Belief Statement

Yifang(Summer) Shi

My mom served as an elementary math teacher for 36 years and retired in 2012. She

is absolutely a lovely and caring lady to her students. I always remember that how she

praised her students proudly everyday and I seldom heard she complained any kids. I

believe, in her eyes, every pupil has his merit. Therefore, I was positively influenced and

inspired by my mom. She always encourages me to find variable shining points from

individuals and never refuse to praise them. I brought this encouragement into my own

values as rational, thoughtful, empathic, and respect. By carrying my own ethics, I can

confidently handle problems, make decisions and reach my goals to gain great

improvements.

By connecting with my personal values, as a professional educator, I believe the rule

that Rita Pierson raised, “Every child deserves a champion”. As Rita mentioned in the TED

Talk, we, adults, who never give up on our students, who understand the power of

connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.

Personally, a good educator has a strong hope to make sure every single students is

successful as education is more than teaching lessons and moving in, but it is equally

important to build strong relationships with the students, get to know them as individuals,

and always encourage children to move forward and do better. We can’t teach a child

effectively if we don’t have a positive relationship with them. We can’t teach a child

effectively if we don’t tell them how many potentials that we see from them. Student don’t

learn from people with negative attitude and bad mood. Students don't’ learn from people

that they don’t like.

While bringing my own ethics to my profession career, I make connections in the

follow ways:

1. Rational- Look up ourselves as a guide or mentor, analyze every kids in a rational way

by understanding their different needs; Give our professions the best to serve the kids and

never give up them; You may never like the kids all, but they all deserve to have a chance.

2. Thoughtful and Empathic-It’s all about the relationships that we are able to make, the

things we can impress our students and give them belief that they can all do wonderful

things in their lives. They hear that enough times and they will find themselves excelling.

3. Respect- Respect our students, believe in them and never hesitate to praise them. It is

okay to say Sorry. It’s good for the students to accept the teacher’s apology because they

can understand that people all make mistakes. Always encourage students to learn from

mistakes to do better next time.

I believe that educators need to make connect with students, give them a change to win

a champion and have them believe in themselves. If the students grow up with no fear to take

risks and to think, our world would be a better place.
