Loose thickness of aggregates will be 120 to 140 percent of compacted
thickness.
Bitumen Grade and Application of Bitumen:-

80/100 Penetration Grade Bitumen should be used in surface dressing, seal

coat and Premix chipping carpet in Plains.
The viscosity of the binder should be such that:

(i) At the time of application it should be fluid enough to permit uniform

spraying and wet the cover aggregates.

(ii) After the covered aggregates are rolled into position, it should become
hard enough to hold them in position against displacement by traffic.

Quantity of binder required per 10 Sq. Mtr is 14.6 kg. for Premix chipping
carpet.
Quantity of binder required per 10 Sq. Mtr is 6.8 kg. for Premix seal coat.

Heating temperature for binder is 150-165°C for Premix chipping carpet.

Construction Practice:-

The existing surface is made clean of dust or caked mud, by brushing and
sweeping. Irregularities such as potholes are made up with precoated chips
and rammed. The edges are marked out by ropes. Immediately before laying
the carpet tack coat using 10kg/ 10 Sq. M is sprayed by hand operated
sprayers. The aggregates are heated with binder in Mobile Hot Mix Plant
(Light duty), the heated mixed material is emptied on wheel barrows/
stretchers and spread on road by means of forks and rakes. Camber boards
are used for checking cross profile. Rolling is done by power rollers of 8-10
Tonnes capacity, as soon as a sufficient length, say 15 metres of carpet, has
been laid.
The rolling is done longitudinally starting at the edges and proceeding
towards the crown. On super elevated curves, the rolling is started from the
inner side of the curves, proceeding towards the outer edge. The speed of
rolling should not exceed 5 km/hr. The successive passes should overlap the
previous ones by at least half the width of the rear wheel. The roller wheels
can be moistened with water to prevent adhesion of the materials to the
wheels. The tolerance in the final surface should be 10mm in the longitudinal
profile when measured with a 3 m straight edge and 6mm in the cross profile.

Seal coat is laid as early as possible. Traffic is allowed preferably 24 hours

after laying the seal coat.
