Scenario
You have now been tasked with producing an additional report which aims to show the need for the
public sector to set and work to strategies for sustainability.
Task 1
You will need to define what sustainability means
Also the consequences of not embracing sustainable development, both for the UK and for the
global economy.
This provides evidence for P4
Task 2
One approach would be to choose a pressure group that is also a political party, plus another
pressure group that focuses on campaigning activity.
You could describe both their roles now and over the last 50 years. This will show the need to
change as sustainable policies have moved from minority to mainstream thinking.
This provides evidence for P5
Task 3
Using these examples you will need to think about raising awareness of the public, corporations
and governments. Also you should consider pressure group campaigns and events and other
activities.
Task 4
You should develop your ideas from P5 by analysing the way pressure groups have worked and
how successful (or otherwise) they have been at raising awareness.
This provides evidence for M2
Task 5
You need to give examples of targets set for the public sector to contribute to improving
sustainability. Then you should put forward arguments to support them. You will need to
consider whether, at a time of overall constraint in public sector expenditure the introduction of
sustainability targets is justifiable. What costs, if any, would there be from not meeting those
targets?
This provides evidence for M3
Task 6
You will need to review some of the targets set in documents like Securing of the Future (2005) and
look for data to show whether the UK public sector is on target to achieve them.
You should also consider whether the targets set in UK and EU strategies are sufficient to ensure that
sustainability can be achieved.
This provides evidence for D1
