Planning for IoT design

In the previous modules, we have looked at various case studies that show IoT technologies at work.

There are many factors to consider in the planning phase of IoT design, but as Iain said in his introduction video: IoT is not about
using technology for technology’s sake. Whatever IOT innovation you have in mind should, above all, provide a bene t or solve a
problem, such as:

Saving resources

Performing a job better/more e ciently

Advancing knowledge

In the initial planning stage of an IoT design, it is useful to ll out an IoT design template to help you gather your ideas, and
consider and answer important questions.

Below is an example of an IoT design template for the dairy case study that we have followed throughout this course.

  ACTIVITY: IoT design template

1. Read through the dairy farm case study document above.

2. Download a blank IoT planning design template and complete it for one of the other case studies in this course (for
example, the Drop Foot gait analysis case study, or Autonomous bus case study).

3. Fill in the template as if the design was for a commercial product. Save the document on your computer or device.
4. Now download and ll in another blank template for your own IoT idea or project.

Addressing these types of design questions early in the planning process will help you to create a better IoT product. In the

speci cally.
