3-ON-3 Basketball Rules

Equipment:
1. Game balls will be provided.
2. All participants must wear athletic shoes during the tournament.
3. No jewelry allowed.
4. Headbands may be worn. No baseball caps, bandanas, or any other hard-billed hats are allowed.

Players and Substitutes:

1. Any player who is bleeding, has an open wound, or has an excessive amount of blood on the
uniform shall be considered an injured player and must immediately leave the game for the
appropriate treatment.
2. Substitutions can be made after a basket or stoppage of play.
3. Players wearing glasses should have shatterproof lenses and straps.
The Game:
1. Games will be played to 30 points using 2 and 3-point baskets or will last for 20 minutes. If
neither team scores 30 points within 20 minutes then the team with the most points at the end of
regulation time wins. Teams do not have to win by two.
2. A successful basket is worth either 2 or 3 points.
3. NO time-outs.
4. A coin toss will determine possession. Alternating possession for any jump ball situation
thereafter.
5. The check line will be any point beyond the three-point line. Two feet behind the check line
constitutes a legal check. If a team does not attempt to check the ball, it will result in a turnover.
6. After a made basket, or after a foul is awarded, the ball must be passed in to start play after
being checked with the opposing team.
7. NO Make it Take it: The ball changes possession after each scored basket.
8. All balls that go out of bounds will be checked into play at the top of the key.
9. Any ball that goes beyond the half-court line, baseline, or sidelines is out of bounds.
10. Offense will call the fouls and defense will call the violations.
11. Overtime: If the score is tied at the end of 20 minutes, the game goes into sudden death
overtime. A coin flip determines which team has the initial possession.
12. No stalling is allowed.
13. Taking It Back: When in play, the ball must be “taken back” on each change of possession.
“Taking it back” means BOTH feet must be behind three-point arc. Failure to “take it back” is a
violation and results in a change of possession.
14. No Parking Zone: this zone is the box in front of the basket. An offensive player CANNOT
remain stationary for 3 seconds with both feet in this box AND receive the ball when guarded
by an opposing player. This results in a change of possession.
15. Good sportsmanship is expected.

Fouls:
1. There is no personal foul limit. However, if the gym monitor determines that a player is abusing
this rule, the player will be asked to sit out for the rest of the game.
2. If the shooter calls a Foul, the play stops.
3. After any foul, the ball must be checked and passed in at the top of the key. Free throws will
not be shot.
4. All offensive fouls will result in a change of possession only.
