Main Ideas-
-The scientific method is a logical approach to solving problems that lend
themselves to investigation.
-A hypothesis is a testable statement that serves as the basis for
predictions and further experiments.

Describing Matter-Pgs 6-14
Main Ideas-
-All matter has mass and takes up space. Mass is one measure of the
amount of matter.
-Chemical properties refer to a substance’s ability to undergo changes that
alter its composition and identity.
-An element is composed of one kind of atom. Compounds are made from
two or more elements in fixed proportions.
-All substances of characteristic properties that enable chemists to tell the
substances apart and to separate the substances.
-Physical changes do not involve changes in identity of a substance.
-The three major states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. Changes of
state, such as melting and boiling, are physical changes.
-In a chemical change- or a chemical reaction- the identity of the
substance changes.
-Energy changes accompany physical and chemical changes. Energy may
be released or absorbed, but it is neither created nor destroyed.
-Matter can be classified into mixtures and pure substances.
-A solid has a definite shape and volume. A liquid has a definite volume
but it takes the shape of a container whereas a gas fills the entire volume
of a container.

Main Ideas-
-The periodic law states that the physical and chemical properties of the
elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers
-The periodic table is an arrangement of the elements in order of their
atomic numbers so that elements with similar properties fall in the same
columns
-The columns in the periodic table are referred to as groups
-The rows of the periodic table are called periods
-Many chemical properties of the elements can be explained by the
configuration of the elements outermost electrons
-The noble gases exhibit unique chemical stability because their highest
occupied levels have an octet of electrons
-Based on the electron configurations of the elements, the periodic table
can be divided into 4 blocks: s block, p block, d block, f block
-The groups and periods of the periodic table display general trends in the
following properties of elements: electron affinity, electronegativity,
ionization energy, atomic radius, ionic radius
-The electrons in an atom that are available to be lost, gained or shared in
the formation of chemical compounds are referred to as valence electrons
-In determining the electron configuration of an ion, the order in which
electrons are removed from the atom is the reverse of the order given by
the atom’s electron-configuration notation

Bonding-Chap 6
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1PcV-hpkUKbI0KQPS2QkUonzkDHef
-l-J
Main Ideas-
-Most atoms are chemically bonded to other atoms
-The three major types of chemical bonding are ionic, covalent, and
metallic
-Atoms of metals bond ionically with atoms of non-metals, atoms of metals
bond metallically with each other, and atoms of nonmetals bond covalently
with each other
-Atoms in molecules are joined by covalent bonds. In a covalent bond, two
atoms share one or more pairs of electrons.
-The octet rule states that many chemical compounds tend to form bonds
so that each atom shares or has eight electrons in its highest occupied
energy level.
-Bonding within many molecules and ions can be indicated by Lewis
structure. Molecules or ions that cannot be correctly represented by a
single Lewis structure are represented by resonance structures.

Main Ideas-
-Acids have a sour taste and react with active metals. Acids change the
colors of acid-base indicators, react with bases to produce salts and water,
and conduct electricity in aqueous solutions.
-Bases have a bitter taste, feel slippery to the skin in dilute aqueous
solutions, change the colors of acid-base indicators, reacts with acids to
produce salts and water, and conduct electricity in aqueous solutions
-A strong acid has a weak conjugate-base, a strong base has a weak
conjugate acid

SEMESTER REVIEW
Mixtures/Solutions-Chap 12
Main Ideas-
-Solutions are homogeneous mixtures
-Mixtures are classified as solutions, suspensions, or colloids, depending on
the size of the solute particles in the mixture
-The dissolved substance is the solute.
-Solutions that have water as the solvent are aqueous solutions.
-Solutions can consist of solutes that are solids, liquids, or gases.
-Suspensions settle out upon standing. Colloids do not settle, and scatter
light.
-A solute dissolves at a rate that depends on the surface area of the
solute, how vigorously the solution is mixed, and the temp of the solvent.
-The solubility of a substance indicates how much of that substance will
dissolve in a specified amount of solvent under certain conditions.
-The solubility of a substance depends on the temperature.

Main Ideas-
-The particles of a liquid are closer together and more ordered than those
of a gas and are less ordered than those of a solid.
-Liquids have a definite volume and a fairly high density, and they are
relatively incompressible.
-Like gases, liquids can flow and are considered to be fluid

Main Ideas-
-Gases diffuse, or become more spread out, due to their constant random
molecular motion.
-A barometer measures atmospheric pressure.
-Dalton’s law of partial pressure states that in a mixture of unreacting
gases, the total pressure equals the sum of the partial pressures of each
gas.
-Boyle’s law states that the inverse relationship between the volume and
the pressure of a gas. PV=k
-Charles’s Law illustrates the direct relationship between a gas’s volume
and it’s temperature in kelvins. V=kT
-Gay-Lussac’s Law represents the direct relationship between a gas’s
pressure and it’s temp in kelvins P=kT
-The combined gas law is a combination of Boyle’s, Charles’s, and
Gay-Lussac’s Law.
-Avogadro’s law states that equal volumes of gases at the same
temperature and pressure contain an equal number of molecules
-Charles’s Law, Boyle’s Law, and Avogadro’s law can be combined to
create the ideal gas law.
-Graham’s law of effusion states that the relative rates of effusion of gases
at the same temperature and pressure are inversely proportional to the
square roots of their molar masses.

Main Ideas-
The particles of a solid are not nearly as free to move about as those of a
liquid or gas are.
-Solids have a definite shape and may be crystalline or amorphous. They
have a definite volume and are generally non-fluid.
-A crystal structure is the total 3 dimensional array of points that describes
the arrangement of the particles of a crystal.
-Unlike crystalline solids, amorphous solids do not have a highly ordered
structure or a regular shape.
