COURSE TITLE AND NUMBER: Perioperative Nursing Theory

PLACEMENT IN PROGRAM OF LEARNING: Elective Second Term through Fourth


Term for Current Nursing Students; Open enrollment to any Florida Licensed Registered
Nurse.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to introduce the registered nurse or


nursing student to Perioperative Nursing with a focus on the Intraoperative component.
This course includes an introduction to the Patient’s Perioperative Experience, Roles and
Responsibilities of the Registered Nurse; Principles and Practice of Sterile Technique;
Sterilization and Disinfection; Operating Room Hazards; and an Introduction to Surgical
Technique.

CREDITS: 3 Semester Credits. Student may register anytime and exit at anytime once
the course objectives are completed. It is expected that course completion will be achieved
within one semester. A second course is available through cooperative education for
“hands on” experience in the operating room – NUR 2949. Please call L. McNaron for
further information on the course. Upon satisfactory completion (70%; C or better) of
both courses a Certificate in Perioperative Nursing will be awarded.

CLOCK HOURS:
Distance Education Course over a 12- 16 Week Period utilizes Blackboard – Web Course.

PRE-REQUISITE: Current pre-requisites for second term nursing; or current proof of


licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida.
CO-REQUISITE: Registered Nursing License. If not, then student must be currently
enrolled or completed NUR1212C.
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Self-paced modules, computer-assisted instruction.
Instructor interaction via web based course design, assignments, and verbal
feedback/answers and questions.
GCCC GRADING SCALE
METHODS OF EVALUATION: A (90-100)
Assignments 30% B (80-89)
Written Examination 70% C (70-79)
2 Exams: 1 at Midterm D (60-69)
1 Final Exam F (0-59)

TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADE:


30% of the grade is from module assignments.
Completion of Assigned Modules – Average Score –Self-assessment Quizzes from each
module.
70% of the grade is from the student’s Mid-term and Final Exam.

IN ORDER TO PASS THIS COURSE STUDENTS MUST:


(1) Complete the blackboard examinations.
(2) Adhere to the policies as listed in the current general college catalog, Handbook for
Nursing Students, and those provided to the student during the first orientation class
for the facility.

ABSENTISM:
To be considered active in the class student must make contact with the instructor at
least weekly via blackboard entry or email. If no contact is received within two
weeks, student will be considered to have self-withdrawn from the class and the
instructor will initiate an instructor withdrawal form for the student.

COMPLETION OF COURSE:
Please note that completion of this course does not guarantee employment or a
specific position at any healthcare facility.

PERIOPERATIVE NURSING
COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

ROLE AS A CIRCULATOR WITHIN THE DISCIPLINE OF NURSING:

1. Describe the basic role and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse during the
preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phase of the patient’s surgical
experience. Identifies the role and responsibilities of the circulator as a member
of the OR Team.

2. Identifies the basic principles of surgical Aseptic Technique including the


Association of Operating Room Nurses Standards of Care and the methods of
sterilization and disinfection.

3. Establishes a client outcome and plan of care that focuses on prevention of


problems. Identifies potential surgical hazards and safety measures to prevent
injury including patient and occupational related hazards.

4. Identifies the basic nursing functions related to Intraoperative care including


positioning and surgical skin preparation for the surgical patient.

5. Identifies the principles and standards related to the establishment and


maintenance of the sterile field as a nonsterile member of the team.

ROLE AS A SCRUB WITHIN THE DISCIPLINE OF NURSING:

1. Identifies the role and responsibilities of the surgical scrub as a member of the
OR team.

2. Identifies the principles and standards related to the performance of the surgical
scrub including closed glove and gown technique.

3. Identifies the principles and standards related to the establishment and


maintenance of the sterile field as a sterile member of the team.

4. Identifies key basic surgical instruments necessary for all surgical procedures.

5. Identifies basic surgical technique principles regarding tissue handling, wound


closure, and hemostasis.
