QRG – CONSOLE 8.6.

0 UPDATE SERVICES

Guide Summary
A new update services model was introduced with Console version 8.6 in July 2017. The
purpose of this change was to greatly enhance the user experience by not only
transforming the way updates are downloaded, but also to streamline and simplify the
entire process of obtaining future updates. Certiport Authorized Testing Centers will be
able to set their choices one time, and for the most part will not have to worry about selecting or managing which
updates to install down the road as long as the computer is on and connected to the internet. This guide will help you
navigate through obtaining version 8.6, and understanding the new elements of Update Services.

Obtaining Console 8.6

The new version of Console can either be installed via existing update services, or by downloading a new executable
from Certiport. Users of Windows 7 and 8 must have at least Microsoft .NET 4.5.2 before installing Console 8.6.

Outdated Users of Console: Users that may still be employing and old version (8.5.x) of Console will need to log in to the
software as an Organization Administrator, click on the Updates tile, and select all “System” updates. The software will
download and install the selected updates. When finished, click the arrow button and restart Console 8.

Note: Above must be performed with Windows Administrator privileges or the built-in Console Admin Credential Proxy.

New Users / Clean Installs: Users who do not have Console yet, or would prefer to perform a clean install, must
download the new 8.6 executable installer from Certiport.com. Log in to www.certiport.com, change your role to an
Organization Administrator or Organization Member, mouse over the Training & Tools tab and click on the dropdown
for “Console 8 Install”. Scroll down the page and find the blue “Download Console 8” graphic. Perform a “Save As” and
then run the file as a Windows Administrator.

Note: Above must be performed with Windows Administrator privileges. New users and clean installs must set up any applicable settings (gear
icon) prior to downloading exam content or delivering your first exam. Please see the Console 8 Install & Setup Guide for more information.

Understanding the Changes to Update Services

After upgrading to version 8.6, log in to Console 8 as an Organization
Administrator/Member to begin. Under the Test Center Admin, you will notice that
a new “Exams” tile was added.

Existing Users of Console: These users will immediately start receiving any system
or exam content updates on a 24-hour interval after installing. The items selected
for updates will be based on the exams your CATC already had content for in the
previous version (which will be based on Licenses or Inventory; for Vouchers see
“Selecting Exam Content” section). The only time you will need to enter the
Download Exams Tile is if you decide to administer a new certification program.

New Users / Clean Installs: New users and clean installs will first enter the
Download Exams Tile to select the exam content they wish to download now, which
will also set what will be automatically downloaded in the future. Once the exams are set, it will not be necessary to go
back in to this tile unless your CATC decides to start administering a new certification program.

Selecting Exam Content to Download: Inside the Exams Tile, the first tab - “Exams with Licenses” - will contain a list of
exam content based on any Licenses and/or Inventory* your CATC currently has purchased (applies to both existing
users or new users/clean installs). Select all that apply, or select the “All Exams” checkbox and then click “Install”.

*Note: No exam content will appear in the first tab if your

CATC has purchased only Vouchers, or if you have not
purchased any exams whatsoever. In these circumstances,
the exam content can be selected, downloaded, and
installed from the “All Available Exams” tab.

After the exams are selected the

Install button will turn green.

The exam content will download and install. You will see a progress bar and a completed notice when finished. Click
the Home button to return to the Home screen. From the Home screen, exams can now be administered as normal
through the “Practice/Certify” pathway.

Setting Your Update Frequency:

Version 8.6 will allow CATCs to set their update frequency. Three settings are available: Daily, Weekly, and Manual.
Click the Gear icon from the home screen to access the settings.

Daily: Every 24 hours

Weekly: Every 7 days

Manual: Notifies the Admin *The time of day field will

that updates are available only be present if Daily or
and will indicate the number Weekly are selected.
of updates via the Updates
Tile on the Home screen.
The bar will remain green
unless a critical update is present. Select your update frequency, set the time of day* you wish updates to
occur, then click OK to save your changes and continue.

Updates as a Windows Service:

Beginning with version 8.6, updates now run as a Windows service called “CertiportNow”. This allows all updates (both
system and exam) to run in the background as long as Console is installed, the computer is turned on, and has an active
internet connection with all Console whitelist IPs accessible.

“CertiportNow” Button:

Included on almost every screen of Console 8 is the CertiportNow

button, which will manually launch the service should it be unable to for
any reason. In most cases, the service will only fail to launch if the current
Windows user is not an Admin, or the Windows Admin credentials are not
being applied via the User Rights Admin Proxy.

In Pathway Updates
Should an update be available during exam selection, the program tile will be grayed out with an orange action bar
underneath it until the update has been completed. The exam cannot launch until the update has been performed.

Click on the disabled tile to begin the download for that

particular exam. A confirmation message will appear:

Click OK and the exam will download and install. When

completed a confirmation message will display:

The exam is updated and the

exam launch pathway can be
completed without any
additional interruption.

Note: Since an “In Pathway” update would only occur when a Test Candidate is attempting to launch an exam, this type
of update can be performed at that time without switching to an Organization Administrator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: We have programs that we have downloaded but are no longer administering. Will we still receive updates for
these items after moving to version 8.6.?
A: Yes. Console 8.6. looks at what your CATC has already downloaded and uses that information to determine what
updates you require. If you wish to “reset” the programs in your list, you will need to perform a clean uninstall and
reinstall.

Q: What if our CATC decides to start administering a new exam program?

A: Console connects with Certiport and determines the Exam List based on your current Exam Licenses or Inventory.
Console will see that a new exam has been purchased and allow you to download and install the correlating exam
content.

Q: How do I perform a “clean” install of Console 8?

A: Perform a clean install by removing all Console/Certiport software via the “Programs & Features” tool in the
Control Panel, then delete the local "Certiport" folder and all its contents (which is located by default in the root of
your primary HDD i.e. C:\Certiport\*.*). Then proceed to reinstall Console 8 as a Windows Administrator.

Q: What will occur if we checkmark an item in the Exams tile that has previously been downloaded?
A: The selected item(s) will not download again, but Console 8 will reinstall it/them.
