I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
a. Determine the decile for ungrouped data.
b. Calculate a specified measure of position of a set of data using decile.
c. Display cooperation with a group in doing the activity.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Deciles for Ungrouped Data
References: Learner’s Module pp. 373-375
Curriculum Guide p. 106
Materials: Chalk board and White board, Cartolina, Manila Paper, Marker, Chalk
Values Integration: Cooperation

III. Teaching Strategy:

A. Pre-activities
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance
 Drill: “4 pics, 1 Word”

Group Activity: The students will be grouped into four (4). Tell them to follow the
directions and do it as fast as they can. After the students give the name of the picture
the teacher elaborates the picture across the other subject areas.
1 2 3 4 5 6

(1) Measure, (2) Position. (3) Divide, (4) Ten, (5) Equal, and (6) Parts

 Review
The teacher will let the students recall the formula in calculating a specific measure
of position in quartiles.

 Motivation
Group Activity: The four (4) groups of students must follow the directions and do it as
fast as they can.
Procedures to Follow: Assign a leader and a presentor.
Record your ages on the table.
Then arrange the data from least to greatest.
Identify the smallest and the largest value of your data.
And present your work in class.
Answer the guide questions.
1. Will you able to calculate the data into ten equal parts?
2. If you can partition it into ten equal parts, how can you identify the middle
position?
3. And how can you identify the 2nd, 3rd …9th position of your data?

B. Lesson Proper
1. Through their ages organize the students’ responses which will lead them to the
introduction of the concept “Deciles for Ungrouped Data”.

2. Define measures of the position.

Measures of Position are techniques that divide a set of data into equal groups.
To determine the measurement of position, the data must be sorted from lowest to
highest or highest to lowest. One of the measures of position are Deciles.

3. Define decile.
The DECILES are nine score-points that divide a distribution into ten equal parts.
Deciles and are denoted as D1, D2, D3…, D9 and computed in the same way that
the quartiles are calculated. The word decile was first known used on 1882, it comes
from the Latin word decem ten- it means more at Ten.

To calculate deciles for the ungrouped data, first order the all observation
according to the magnitudes of the values, then use the following formula
for Decile.
𝑚
Dm= (n+1); where m=1,2, ⋯,9
10
And n is the number of your data.

4. Give examples.
Example 1: Given the series 3,5, 7, 4, 6, 2, and 9. Calculate the 2nd and 4th decile.

Solution: To find the decile first we have to arrange the data in order.
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9.
𝑚
Here n = 7 Dm= (n+1)
10
2
D₂ = 10(7+1)
2
= 10(8)
16
= 10
= 1.6
= 1st value + 0.6 of the distance between 1st and 2nd value
= 2 + 0.6(3-2)
D₂ = 2.6

Now let us find the value for D₄

Solution: The ordered data is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9.
𝑚
Here n = 7 Dm= (n+1)
10
4
D₄ = (7+1)
10
4
= (8)
10
32
=
10
= 3.2
= 3rd value + 0.2 of the distance between 3rd and 4th value
= 4 + 0.2(5-4)
D₄ = 4.2

Example 2: Using the ages of the students gather in their groups.

(2) Application
 In the same group, let the students list their height, their weight and their daily
allowance.
 Then, let them identify the 3rd, 6th, and 8th decile of the following set of grades.

(3) Generalization
a. When do we apply measures of position?
b. What is Decile?
c. What is the formula of decile?
d. What are the different between the decile and quartile?
Enumerate the importance of measures of position.
 Dealing with large amount of data, which includes the timely results for
standardized tests in schools etc.
 Trying to discover the smallest as well as the largest values in a given
distribution.
 Examining financial fields for academic as well as statistical studies

IV. Evaluation
“Think-Pair-Share”

1. Find the 4th decile, 9th decile, 5th decile and 7th decile of a data set: 1, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7,
8, 8,7,2,11,12,15,2,3,1

2. Calculate 2nd, 4th and 8th deciles of following ordered data 13, 13,13, 20, 26, 27, 31,
34, 34, 34, 35, 35, 36, 37, 38, 41, 41, 41, 45, 47, 47, 47, 50, 51, 53, 54, 56, 62, 67, 82.

V. Assignment
1. Following are the scores of 24 Grade 10 students in a Mathematics Class: 45, 30, 36,
26, 16, 21, 33, 40, 32, 14, 10, 29, 23, 39, 17, 11, 18, 34, 19, 24, 21, 42, 37. Find
𝐷1, 𝐷4, 𝐷6, 𝐷7, 𝐷9 .

2. Jimboy took a College Admission Test in USEP Davao City. His score belongs to the
8th decile. Should Jimboy be pleased about his score? Why or why not?

1. Valuing
 Do you think Decile is important in our daily life?
 How important is it to you as a student’s?
 How is important is it in our society?

4A’s Approach
Activity- The teacher will let the students recall the formula in calculating a specific measure of
position in quartiles.2. Analysis- The teacher will then pose a question.

Question:
“How can the position of data be described and used in solving real –life problems”
3. Abstraction- The teacher will present the concept of deciles.
DECILES FOR UNGROUPED DATA
The DECILES are nine score-points that divide a distribution into ten equal parts. - they are deciles
and are denoted as D1, D2, D3,…, D9 - they are computed in the same way that the quartiles
are calculated.
Example
Suppose we want to find the 3rd decile D3 of the following test scores of a random sample of 10
students.
35 42 40 28 15 23 33 20 18 28 15 18 20 23 28 28 33 35 40 42
Position of D3
D3 = 3/10(n+1)
=3/10(10+1)
=3/10(11)
=33/10
=3.3 or 3

is the 3rd element. Therefore, D3 is 20.

PERCENTILES of UNGROUPED DATA

The percentiles are the ninety-nine score points which divide a distribution into onehundred equal
parts, so that each part represents the data set. It is used to characterize valuesaccording to the
percentage below them.
Solution:
Dm==m×{(n+1)10}th value2×30+110=6.2Dm=m×{(n+1)10}th value=2×30+110=6.2
We have to locate the sixth value in the ordered array and then have to more 0.2 of the distance
between the sixth and seventh values. i.e. the value of 2nd decile can be calculated as
6th observation+{7th observation–6th observation}×0.26th observation+{7th observation–
6th observation}×0.2

as 6th observation is 27 and 7th observation is 31.

The second decile would be 27+{31−27}×0.2=27.827+{31−27}×0.2=27.8
Similarly D8 can be calculated. D8 = 52.6.
