September 11 attacks were the largest terrorist attacks ever suffered on American soil.
They caused many deaths and destruction and triggered an enormous US effort to combat terrorism.
Nobody could imagine that something like that would ever happen in the center of the most
powerful country in the world. The Twin Towers, the emblematic buildings of the financial power
of the western world , were complety destroyed, killing nearly 3000 poeple.
The psicological effects of 9/11 were overwhelming. Thousands of people could watch the tragedy
firsthand or on TV in real time. A generalized panic was generated and the sensation of being in a
state of constant danger continues today.
The vision of a rich, democratic world safe from the violence and the inestability of the poor
countries broke down. The world went into shock because the unthinkable came true. It entered in a
new era of vulnerability and fear.
The attacks did not discover the terrorist phenomenon but they helped to realize that there were new
security problems.
The government of George W. Bush, president between 2002 and 2008, initiated a preventive war
and promoted the invasion of Afghanistan (where the Taliban regime was overthrown) and Iraq
where the regime of Saddam Hussein ended. Almost 19 years have passed and they still have
troops there.
As a result of the attacks, security measures in airports, transport stations and public buildings have
become a lot stricter. You have to wait long lines and security checks are more severe and
uncomfortable.
Architecture has also changed since the terrorist attacks. Many buildings have metal detectors and
cameras that allow you to observe everything that happens inside and outside, and you need to be
registered to access the buildings.
Another consequence is the increase in civil rights controls and racism against Muslims.
They suffer a strong social discrimination. An unjust prejudice and a anti muslim sentiment has
grown in many western countries. There is an increasing fear of islam and some people tend to
blame them only because of the religion they profess. It is a shame that sometimes Islamism is
confused with terrorism!
