Chapter 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I. Introduction

Communication has a very important role in everyone’s life. Without it conveying

emotions and sharing opinions would be very hard. When two people say something or,

just as importantly, say nothing, communication is taking place (Hinton, 1985). It has an

important role inside the classroom, since good communication between the teachers

and the students secures understanding between the two parties. The message must

be clear and direct to the point to lessen the chances of miscommunication. In having

communication, we build strong connection to one another. Through verbal and

nonverbal communication we can easily express our ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

However, nonverbal communication is disregarded to the extent that we don’t really pay

much attention into it and understand it well but it plays a very important role. Even

inside the classroom nonverbal communication is present but we fail to notice it.

Couch (1993) has discussed in his paper, Nonverbal Language and Its Implications

for Teachers. He was able to infer that nonverbal communication is important. He also

said that students can decode from the teacher’s nonverbal language if he is warm and

caring, or strict and unsympathetic. By demonstrating certain nonverbal behaviors,

teachers can demonstrate the conduct they expect in from the class. Nonverbal

communication can indicate the expectations of the teachers from the students.

Butt (2011) discussed to his study, Impact of Non-verbal Communication in

Students' Learning Outcomes, to raise awareness of the importance of nonverbal

communication and to find out the relation between non-verbal communication and

education. In this research, he state that teachers made learning environment active

through their non-verbal communication where students being alert in the classrom and

more paticipative in the learning process that enhance the level of students' retention

and understanding. It is inferred to the study that proper use of non-verbal

communication depicted the professional attitude and interes of teachers and student in

teaching- learning process that eventually turn into the attainment of desired learning

outcomes of students. The non-verbal communication use in the study was only

restricted to body movements, facial expression, eye contact, pitch of voice and spatial

distance between teachers and students.

Wood (1976,as cited in butt2011) verbal language can be used to communicate

almost anything. The non-verbal language of body movements appears to have a

limited range. Body language communicates in our feelings, emotion, preference, and a

selected bits of information concerning to gender, time, relationship and so forth.

Generally body language either it’s reinforce or conradict the feeling and information

conveyed in the verbal channels. Body language includes the movements of a part ofa

body, such as nod of the head or raising eye brows and movements of each part of the

entire body. Hands and shoulder are body parts that can much influence teaching

learning process, teachers can utilize these parts of the body to provide extra

information and importance aboit to the different concepts and topics. It generates

desire for learning amongst the students and they will pay attention to the teachers body

movements and gasp the meaning of the lesson taught.

Nirrenberg & Calero (2000, as cited in Butt 2011) the easily and least of

controversial of all the areas of non-verbal communication is facial expression this is

also the most readily observed group of gestures. They focus their eyes on the face

more often than on any part of the body. Facial expression can express shocked or

great surprise and such.

Miller (1988, as cited in Butt 2011) the most important and reliable feature of the

face is the eye which provides a constant channel of communication they can be shifty

and evasic: lonely, hate, fear and guilt; or express confidence lone and support. The

study shows that gaze and eye contact can provide information, regulate interaction,

and express intimacy. Furthermore, teachers can have individual contacts with every

student in the classroom, through eye contact attitudes of being intimacy, aloofness,

concern of indifference where they can be inferred by the way old release.

Young (2006, as cited in Butt 2011) the tone should reinforce the verbal message

you are relying. Whether speaker casually or doing formal presentation, the inflection

should be appropriate. Be conscious of the emotion of the voice as with in formal

speaker. In contras it vary the tone subtle so that the speaker is not putting himself to

his audience to sleep with a controlled monotone.

Delito (2009, as cited in Butt 2011) the space is very important aspect of

interpersonal communication, but most of the time we overlook it. He categorize the four

types of space or distance, under abroad heading of proxemics distance or spatial

distance the first is intimate distance, it consider close relationship between two person.

Second, personal distance, this aspect distance keeps a distance between the person

and protects a person by touch of others. Third is social distance, this is more formal

and loses the visual details which one can have in or a personal distance. Lastly, public

distance is the situation of a one person cannot visualize minute details, but still can see

what's happening around.

On the other hand, O’Hair and Ropo (1994) discussed in their article, Unspoken

Messages: Understanding Diversity in Education Requires Emphasis on Nonverbal

Communication, the importance of nonverbal communication in teaching. They

mentioned four major functions that nonverbal communication serves in educational

context- expressing emotions, conveying interpersonal attitudes, presentation of one’s

personality, accompanies verbal communication. They were able to present a

framework of nonverbal teaching with five major components- paralanguage, facial

expression, eye and visual behavior, gesture and body movements, and space. They

described and discussed each of those components in relation to an instructional

communication context and diversity in education.

According to Lakeside Educational Network (2002), a 16-year old is more

oriented towards the future– plans for college, can talk about marriage in serious vein.

He or she is less impulsive and shows better judgment. A 16 year old is interested in

people and likes to build multiple friendships on a non-romatic basis.

Carpio (2018) defined General Academic Strand (GAS) as the most flexible

strand among the four strands offered in the Academic Track because students get to

learn and experience something from all the other strands. GAS is essentially for

students who are undecided on which strand to take. GAS is not only for those who are

still undecided on which course they wanted to take, but some of them take this strand

to pursue educational course where they want to become teachers.

The researchers aim to know the nonverbal communication used by the lecturers

of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela (PLV) Senior High School Department

and to know its effects to the students’ participation in class and to know how the

students and the lecturers perceive nonverbal communication. The researchers came

up to the idea of a study on the effects of nonverbal communication used by the lectures

of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela (PLV) in teaching the General Academic

Strand students of the Senior High School Department.

II. Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this grounded theory study is to understand the effects of non-verbal

communication used by lecturers particularly of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela

(PLV) Senior High School Department on the students of the General Academic Strand.

Specifically, it answers the questions:

1) What are the non-verbal communication used by the lecturers in terms of

the following:

i. Body Movements

ii. Facial Expression

iii. Eye contact

iv. Pitch of Voice

v. Spatial Distance

2) How does non-verbal communication affect the student’s participation in

class?

3) How lecturers and students of General Academic Strand do perceived the

use of non-verbal communication inside the classroom?

I. Scope and Delimitation

The study will focus on the effects of non-verbal communication used by

lecturers in teaching their students. This study limits its coverage on the lecturers from

Senior High School department and General Academic Strand students of Pamantasan

ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela. The researchers will use grounded theory study to interpret

the effects of non-verbal communication to the students in terms of the five classes of

nonverbal signals namely body movement, facial expression, eye contact, pitch of voice

and spatial distance. In this study, the researchers will gather the data through

observation and interview. The researchers will use the study of Muhammad Naeem

Butt a Faculty of Arts, Social Science and Education in Sarhad University of Science

and Information Technology, Peshawar Pakistan, as the definition of non-verbal

communication in the entire research.

II. Significance of the Study

Students. The research will be most helpful to students for them to realize how

nonverbal communication affects their class participation. It will also help them realize

the importance of nonverbal communication in their everyday life.

Teachers. This research will be helpful to teachers for them to know the effects of

nonverbal communication in teaching. It will also help them in understanding their

students’ nonverbal behavior.
