DOST 6 gears up for new int'l standard on labs
ILOILO CITY, March 15, 2019-- To better understand the new requirements, changes, structure and clauses of the
ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and implement Laboratory Quality Management System (LQMS), the Department of Science
and Technology Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (DOST VI-RSTL) in partnership with Iloilo Science and
Technology University (ISAT-U) conducted its three-day training course on awareness and conduct of internal quality
audit (IQA) based on the new version ISO/IEC 17025:2017 last March 12-14 at Research Hub, ISAT U, La Paz Iloilo
City.
ISO/IEC 17025:2017, General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, is the
international reference for laboratories carrying out calibration and testing activities around the world. This allows
laboratories to implement a sound quality system and demonstrate that they are technically competent and able to
produce valid and reliable results. Moreover, this helps facilitate cooperation between laboratories and other bodies by
generating a wider acceptance of results between countries. Test reports and certificates can be accepted from one
country to another without the need for further testing, which, in turn, improves international trade.
Active Assessment Team Leader and Technical Assessor for the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) Engr. Aldwin
B. Tagapan trained the participants and discussed Internal Auditing based on the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 where the
participants were able to organize, plan and prepare internal audit and apply it during the audit process. In addition,
the participants were also trained in audit techniques and write audit findings, reports, records, and follow-ups.
The said training-workshop was attended by DOST VI existing internal and potential auditors comprising the
laboratory internal audit team, ISAT-U, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Aklan Environment and
Resources Office (AKENRO), Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC
AQD), and Negros Prawn Producers Cooperative (NPPC).
DOST VI likewise exerts effort to deliberately comply with the requirements of relevant regulatory bodies. It also
ensures that there is a wide pool of competent personnel who can handle the implementation of quality management
systems so that there are operational continuity and sustainability in the event of personnel movements.
