5 Literacy and numeracy strategies – Work Samples of different maths strategies and Literacy spelling tool
This is a work sample of a student’s initial
attempt on arrays, it was a task which made
students link the visuals of windows that are
symmetrical to the word arrays.
Within my allocated class I have made
observations on the different strategies’
students use for maths and within the
program there was an emphasis on the use
of repeated addition and arrays to solve
simple multiplication problems. This
particular work sample demonstrates the
ability of a student who identifies as an
EAL/D student, the student showed potential
and was able to keep up with the work
through this visual activity.
This worksheet was completed a few lessons
after the initial introduction of arrays. This
work sample is from a student who is of a
higher skill level. The activity is called rolling
multiplication and students were given two
dice and after rolling both they must
multiply the two numbers together. Using
the two strategies we focused on which is
repeated addition and arrays students need
to display the correct use of the strategies.
This was a literacy tool that I have adapted given to me by my
mentor teacher. This is to aide students by letting them try to self-
correct their mistakes, this is a very student-centred approach and
has three attempts of personal initiative before consulting with the
teacher. This is a literacy tool that is used in writing and is kept in
students’ trays and brought out whenever there is any writing
tasks and activities. It is for long term use and can be brought out
when the students is unsure when encountering words they might
have already done.
