Oracle Applications 11.5.

9 - Installation
Update Notes for Linux x86
Note :

Oracle recommends that Oracle E-Business Suite 11i customers move to the latest and therefore
most secure certified version of the JRE Native Plug-in which is currently JRE 1.6.0_27 (6u27).

JRE 7 is not currently certified with Oracle E-Business Suite 11i. This certification is in progress,
please continue using JRE 6 until this is completed.

Section 1. Overview
The Oracle E-Business Suite 11i has two interfaces: a web-based model for modules like
iProcurement and iStore, and an Oracle Forms-based model for our professional services modules
like Oracle Financials.

Historically, Oracle E-Business Suite 11i end-users ran Oracle JInitiator to access forms-based
applications. JInitiator 1.3.1.x reached end of error correction support (ECS) on the 31st July 2009,
see note 552692.1 for further information.

This document describes the use of the JRE native Plug-in for supporting Forms in Oracle E-
Business Suite environments. The benefits of switching from Oracle JInitiator to the native JRE Plug-
in are:

1. Elimination of conflicts between Oracle JInitiator and

other Java virtual machines
Oracle JInitiator is an authorized version of Sun Microsystems' Java2 Standard Edition, with
extensions required to support Oracle Forms. Some versions of Oracle JInitiator have known
conflicts with other Java virtual machines, including Sun Microsystems' Java2 Standard Edition.
Using the native Sun Microsystems' Java2 Standard Edition instead of Oracle JInitiator eliminates
those conflicts.

2. Reduction of desktop client complexity

Managing multiple Java Virtual Machines on Windows-based desktop clients can be potentially
complex. Some Windows-based desktop clients may have three or more Java Virtual Machines
installed, including versions from Microsoft, Sun, and Oracle. For example, Microsoft's Internet
Explorer is dependent upon Microsoft's own Java Virtual Machine. Downloading, installing, and
maintaining separate Java Virtual Machines can be technically complex and costly for enterprise
desktop administrators.
Unraveling Java Terminology
A wide range of products are available for the Java platform. Many of these product names sound
similar, and are sometimes even used interchangeably in Sun's own documentation. For more
information on Java terminology please see the Unraveling Java Terminologywebpage. JRE 6 family
refers to JRE 1.6.x.

To access Oracle Forms-based content in the Oracle E-Business Suite, end-users require the " Sun
Java2 Standard Edition Java Runtime Engine". In this documentation, this is referred to as "JRE",
since it is the runtime component required for end-user desktop clients.

For historical reasons, certain parts of this documentation, particularly the installation scripts, may
refer to "J2SE". You should interpret these references to be equivalent to "Sun Java2 Standard
Edition Java Runtime Engine" or "JRE".

Section 2. Prerequisites
JRE native Plug-in is certified with the Oracle E-Business Suite 11i, with the following minimum
patch requirements:

Windows XP SP3 Desktop Clients

 Oracle Applications 11.5.10 CU2 or higher.

 Oracle Developer 6i Patchset 18 (6.0.8.27.x) or higher.

Windows Vista, SP1 & SP2 Desktop Clients

 Oracle Applications 11.5.10 CU2 with ATG.RUP4 or higher.

 Oracle Developer 6i Patchset 18 (6.0.8.27.x) or higher.

Windows 7 and Windows 7 SP1 Desktop Clients (32-bit and 64-bit)

 Oracle Applications 11.5.10 CU2 with ATG.RUP6 (patch 5903765) or higher.

 Oracle Developer 6i patchset 19 (6.0.8.28.x) (See note 125767.1).

Note :

New fixes are no longer provided on top of Oracle Developer 6i Patchset 18 (6.0.8.27.x). Please
upgrade to PS19 (6.0.8.28.x) to uptake any new or existing fixes for developer 6i. Please see
the Section 5. Known Issues for any further requirements or limitations that may be applicable.

Windows 7 (64-bit) desktop client operating system is currently only certified with Oracle E-Business Suite when
running 32-bit products e.g. Client based products, Browsers, JRE Plug-in and Microsoft Office.

2
Firefox 3.6.x only supports 'next-generation java' Plug-in versions (JRE 1.6.0_10 or higher). Forms based products
cannot be launched using 'classic java' versions (JRE 1.6.0_07 or earlier). The 'Java Control Panel' option, 'Enable
the next-generation Java Plug-in' may however still be switched off if there is a requirement to do this. For further
information on browsers, see note 389422.1 entitled 'Recommended Browsers for Oracle E-Business Suite 12'.

Compatibility with Higher JRE releases

Oracle has certified the Oracle E-Business Suite with the minimum JRE releases noted above on the
JRE 1.6 and JRE 1.5 families. Oracle E-Business Suite end-users may use or upgrade to higher
production releases of the JRE Plug-in on either family at their discretion.

Oracle will continue to test and certify the Oracle E-Business Suite with selected future versions of
JRE releases in advance of their general availability to the public. Oracle will update this
documentation with known compatibility issues or workarounds as needed. All current JRE
production versions equal to or higher than the minimum versions stated above are compatible with
Oracle E-Business Suite 11i.
Note: J2SE 5.0 reached its End of Service Life (EOSL) in October 2009. JRE 1.5.0_22 (5u22) was
the final publicly available update of the Plug-in on the JRE 5 stream and was also be the final
version certified against Oracle E-Business Suite 11i. It is recommended that users upgrade to the
latest release on the JRE 6 stream to uptake future Plug-in security and other fixes.
