Daily mail – targets lower-middle class and older British people.

The daily mail is a British Newspaper which targets lower-middle class older British people, women
in particular. The newspaper is also very right wing (the most right wing major newspaper in the UK)
This means their articles and stories are more likely to support Theresa may and things such as Brexit
and being ‘British’ emphasising patriotism and tradition values, whilst also being biased against left
wing beliefs or ideas.

At a first glance this front page seems like a typical couple with the traditional Daily Mail branding
and regular title and advertisements, however multiple semiotics and carefully placed text and
colours mean that this newspaper may not be as ‘regular’ as it appears.

Van Zoonen’s ideas appear in this cover a lot, firstly the woman wearing white and being held close
by the man almost characterises the stereotypical roles of males and females. In addition to this
Megan being ‘posed’ and smiling almost like a model shoot whilst wearing lots of makeup makes it
seem as if she is being ‘made to look good’ whereas Harry seems off- guard with un-styled hair and
seeming more natural shows van Zoonen’s idea of Men being natural and women being ‘made to be
beautiful’ and this could be problematic or offensive to feminists as it only portrays women as their
stereotypical roles using words to describe Meghan as ‘beautiful’ rather than words like strong, and
by showing public figures as these roles it can cause young women to feel ‘they have to be like them’
and will cause women to fall under these specific roles in the future.

However this cover is likely to appeal to the Daily mails audience as, most of them being lower or
middle class people will like the ‘rags to riches’ idea behind Meghan marrying into the royal family
from an immigrant family as its relatable to them. These people aren’t great big rich celebrities,
similar to how Megan was and it almost gives them the feeling that they could be marrying a prince.

Also covering this topic around the time of brexit is also controversial, as the Daily mail is pro-brexit.
There are two aspects to look at, one being that the newspaper is trying to portray traditional British
values, the royal family – the cover being very British with normal formal colours and clothing and
therefore reflecting their patriotism, however with Meghan being from an immigrant family its
almost like they are trying to justify their opinions of ‘not disliking immigrants’ and ‘immigrants are
now key figures in Britain’ whereas in reality they are encouraging an event which will make life for
non-British born families harder.

The Daily mail know events like the royal wedding are very rare occasions where newspaper sales
will be boosted as people want to find out about the event. The 42 pages and souvenir edition
allows the Daily mail to exploit this and use this to get extra advertisement, exposure and try to
encourage other people to buy their papers and use it as a self-advertisement campaign, making
sure this issue of the paper is one of their best and most intriguing

Seems like content couple in a midshot with branding ect….

However aspects of van zoonens ideas appear in this photo …

Whyreader would like ‘stereotypical british couple’

‘stars were allined’

Ect..

Why problematic

Gender sterotypes

Woman is wearing white, lots of makeup and made to look good whilst prince looks almost a bit
arkward professional and ‘natural’ falling into these

Stars alined – normal person marrying into royal family, important and appealing as target audience
is lower/middle class, hope ‘it could be them’

(immigrant also)

With the context of brexit although supporting brexit as right wings, its almost like they are trying to
justify their opinions of ‘not disliking immagrants’ and ‘immagrans are now key figures in Britain’
wheras in reality they are encouraging an event which will ….. Also patriotism wanting British britain
