2 5 Important Inspections For New Ships

www.marineinsight.com

As an experienced ship officer and a part of the takeover crew for

new ships, it is important to have the right knowledge outside the
domain of ship operations and maintenance. Having an idea as to
what to check on a new built ship will definitely give an edge to a
seafarer in his/her career.

When a new ship is about to be delivered, a hull inspector is

assigned to inspect the ship’s hull. A brief knowledge of
inspection of hull and various machinery systems is always
helpful to the seafarer responsible for taking over the ship.

This would also help

in assisting the hull
inspector in finding
any abnormality in
the construction or
deviation from the
plan (The approved
Ship Construction
Plan provided by the
owner to the
shipbuilder).

Though for all the below inspections, a dedicated inspector is

assigned by the shipping company (Hull inspector, machinery
inspector etc.), it is important for the seafarer to have some
basic knowledge of inspections being carried out on a newly
constructed ship.

The ship is constructed in parts and is then eventually assembled

together by welding at hull structure. A thorough inspection of hull
welding is an important job, which is carried out by an officer by
checking the following things:

 The types and sizes of welds, and the edge preparations are
appropriate and correct for the application

 Welding sequences are proper and do not create locked in

stresses or deformations

 All structure is properly aligned and spaced before welding

 Welding is carried out in accordance with agreed upon

standards, codes, and good practice, especially with regard
to absence of spatter, porosity, undercutting, strikes,
excessive crown, cracks and other irregularities

The ship’s hull acts like a spine, which

keeps her water borne, maintaining the
water tightness of the ship. Following are
the important checks taking-over seafarer
officer must perform:
 Where a definite standard of subdivision
has been approved, check the
watertight compartments and all
arrangements and details connected “Ensure the entry of the hull
with the subdivision are in order and inspection is made in the hull
that no changes (or devation from the inspection software, if fitted
plan) affecting them have been made
on the ship for future
references and planning.”
 Examine all side scuttles and their
special locking arrangements. Ensure to
check the test report of the locking
arrangements

 Scupper and sanitary discharge valves

and other appliances intended to
prevent the accidental admission of
water into the hull to be inspected, such
as

• Inspect proper fitting of sea chest plating and grating

• Inspect MGPS (Marine Growth Prevention System) installation
• Check for steam injection and vent valves in sea chest
• Check overboard valve connections to sea chest
• Check the fittings of boiler blowdown valves are as per
requirements and plan. They need more attention since they’re
subjected to high temperature, pressure, corrosion and erosion
• Check the report for leakage test done on all overboard valves

 All watertight doors

and other means for
closing the “openings”
in the watertight
subdivision shall be
inspected and their
condition and
efficiency ascertained;
the doors shall be tried
by hand, and also by
power, if operated by
power

 Check the surface condition and

preparation of the area where
cement is to be applied

 Inspection to be done for ash

chutes and shell plating placed in
way of openings

 Hatch covers and supports,

tarpaulins, cleats, battens, and
other means of securing all
hatches, shall be inspected

 For oil tanker, the shell plating and

bulkheads should be inspected
before fitting the strums of the
cargo suction pipes

The main Hull protections systems popularly used on modern ships

are Sacrificial Anodes and ICCP (considering hull coating and
painting as a different category). Following checks must be carried
out by the responsible officer of the takeover crew:

 Check if the sacrificial anodes (material, design and fitting

location) provided by the shipyard are as per the plan

 The number of anodes and location are as per the plan

 The design life of Sacrificial anode is mentioned by the

shipyard in the report

 Structural drawings and

information of coating
systems are as required for
calculation of surface areas
to be protected

 Ensure the shipyard has

identified the interfaces to
electrically connected
components/systems with
self-sufficient CP systems,
e.g. pipelines

 The anode types (i.e. stand-

off, flush mounted or bracelet
anodes) used are as per the
plan or as specified by
Owner/Purchaser

 If owner (or plan) has not specified the types of anode used, then the
contractor shall select anode type taking into account e.g. net anode
mass to be installed, available space for location of anodes and anode
utilization factor

 Check with shipyard for the reference to welding and/or brazing

Coating is referred to as surface preparation and primer coating of

the hull followed by the hull painting (Find detail explanation in our
Bonus eBook – Hull Painting of Ship). Following are the basic
checks which the responsible officer of a takeover crew must carry:

 Ensure the surface preparation is done as per the IMO

Coating Performance Standard (PSPC)

 Ensure that the applied coatings are approved and review

records of application

 Ensure and check the

surface preparation
machines (blaster etc.)

The detailed inspection of various machinery and systems is

carried out by the engine room crew of the take-over team (Find the
procedure in our eBook – A Practical Guide to Yard Delivery of New
Ship). The general visual inspection of machinery on the ship is to be
done by all the officers to assure that such equipment is correctly
installed and connected to other systems. The inspection must ensure:

 All the machinery are assembled correctly

 All the machinery and system are installed according to the

manufacturers’ instructions and good practice

 All machinery and systems are arranged to provide safe access for
operation and maintenance

 Sufficient room is left for

opening, inspection
and/or removal

 The equipment is not a

hazard, through
malfunction to equipment
in its vicinity

 The foundations are

appropriate for the
equipment

 The equipment has the

correct size or capacity
for the service intended

 The equipment is free of abnormal vibrations

 The equipment does not generate abnormal noise

 The equipment or systems are environmentally sound especially with

respect to oil spill, solid waste, or sewage water pollution, air pollution,
toxic fume generation, excessive noise, etc.

 The systems are energy efficient

 The equipment is user friendly, properly marked and provided with

instruction books, operating guides, trouble shooting information, parts
