Materials:

• The book The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi

• The Name Jar Story Map worksheet

• Jars

• construction paper (wrap jar with)

• tape

• writing utensils (pencils, markers, crayons, colored pencils)

• stickers

Standard: (2)2.4 determine importance in stories

a. recall important details/facts of the text while reading

b. recall sequence of events

c. identify purpose

d. formulate the main idea of text while reading [NS/PS 2.2.3]

Objective: The student will be able to classify difference in cultures while defining the

characters, setting, problem, and solution with 90% accuracy.

DIVERSITY LESSON PLAN 3

Procedure:

1. Introduce: Begin by presenting the book The Name Jar. Ask, “Do you like your name,

why or why not? Has anyone ever mispronounced your name wrong? If so, how did it

make you feel?”

2. Read: Teacher reads the book aloud.

3. Discuss: Students will examine the following questions in a whole group discussion and

small groups.

• Why did the children on the bus tease Unhei and how do you think she felt?

• Why do you think Unhei didn’t introduce herself on the first day of school?

• Do you think that Unhei should use her Korean name or should she change it to

an English name? Why or why not?

• Why is it wrong to tease people who are different?

4. Activities:

• Students will complete The Name Jar Story Map worksheet and discuss it in small

groups.

• Students create their own name jars. Students will put their names and decorate

the jars with something that represents them or something they like about

themselves.

Evaluation: Teacher examines The Name Jar Story Map worksheet for accuracy and knowledge

of the importance of story.
