SYNTHESIS IN STATISTIC
by:

JEFERSON C. BARRIOS
MST-Sci.Ed

I have learned that, Statistics is a branch of mathematics that involves

making sense of data. Data are quantities obtained from some type of
systematic observation. Presented as a list of numbers, data are difficult to
comprehend. By using statistical techniques, researchers work with data to
organize, categorize, condense, summarize, describe, illustrate, analyze,
compare, synthesize, evaluate, and infer.

Whether you intend to employ qualitative methods or quantitative

methods or mixed methods to investigate the research questions for your
dissertation, you will encounter statistics in several contexts. The obvious
application of statistics that you may encounter is the need to use statistics for
data analysis in your quantitative or mixed methods study. Perhaps you are
not planning to employ quantitative methods - what is the value of this course
for qualitative researchers? If your study involves a group of participants, you
may find it helpful and informative to describe your participants'
characteristics. To help your reader understand your participants' context, you
might also find it useful to describe the characteristics of the setting for your
study. These examples represent the producer role of using statistics.

Statistical techniques are used to organize and analyze data, where

data are unambiguous quantifications of observed phenomena (i.e., a regular
way of assigning numbers to certain events or characteristics). In addition to

organizing and analyzing data, statistical techniques include methods for

illustrating the results of the statistical analysis. The prime example of this use
of statistics involves the creation of graphical displays of information using
charts and graphs. Not only is a picture worth a thousand words, it's worth
even more numbers. Through these analyses and graphics, trends and other
patterns may emerge that help researchers and others understand and
explain phenomena in nature.

The Importance of Statistics in Education

Statistics is used every now and then even outside the field of
Education such as Diagnosis and Programming. Statistics works hand-in-
hand with Mathematics. Running away from Statistics is like running away
from mathematics, you will be tired.

Though Statistical approaches sometimes appear to be insignificant to

be noticed, but it doesn’t deny the degree of its value in everyday life.

Student-learning is measured more than ever before, and that means

that the education field needs professionals who have expertise in educational
statistics and measurement.

Probably no other subjects other than statistics demonstrate so

clearly that there are several kinds of intelligence. Hence, statistics, if clearly
understood is a fascinating subject, which has tremendous importance in
psychology and education. Some of the importance may be on the following
below :
It helps in collecting data either numerically or otherwise.
It also helps us in classification, organisation and summarization.
It also helps us in drawing general conclusions.

Statistics also help in the task of evaluation and measurement.

It helps us in the construction and standardization of test as well as using

them properly.
It helps the teacher to know the individual differences of the students,
comparing the suitability of one method or technique with another,
making predictions for the future etc.
Last but not least, statistics also helps in research work in many ways.

EMPHASIS ON EDUCATIONAL STATISTIC IN K TO 12 CURRICULUM

Statistics is taught as part of the mathematics curriculum especially in
senior high school, by teachers or instructor trained in mathematics and
working in a mathematics field. Statistical theory has often been taught as
a mathematical theory rather than as the practical logic of science --- as the
science that "puts chance to work" in Rao's phrase--- and this has entailed an
emphasis on formal and manipulative training, such as solving combinatorial
problems involving red and green jelly beans. Statisticians have complained
that mathematicians are prone to over-emphasize mathematical
manipulations and probability theory and under-emphasize questions
of experimentation, survey methodology, exploratory data analysis,
and statistical inference.
However, students in Grades 11 & 12 are exposed to Practical
Research 1 & 2 in which they are going to do researches on their fields.
And that, they should be equipped to learned how the numerical data are
obtained and collected, analysed, summarized, interpreted, and concluded
and these all are possible when they have that learning from the statistics
subject.

For Stan Paxton, he made the 3-C’s, why statistics in education is so

important especially in the field of research:

1. Communication - Expressing or communicating your results in

numbers (statistically based) is a powerful way to convey your
findings versus using terms like "almost as large as" or "slightly
greater than". What is "slightly greater than" to one scientist may not
mean the same thing to the next scientist. The numbers, and testing
of the numbers to find real, "significant" differences in populations, is
a necessary form of communication for scientists.
2. Credibility - Use of numbers also provides an air of credibility to
scientific studies. Use of statistics requires forethought and
statements about experimental design, methods, and data base
structure. The numbers also force you to formalize your thinking
about hypotheses and how best to ferret out meaning from your
data.
3. Convergence (on "Truth"). Truth? What is truth? When it comes to
scientific research, a goal of our work is, through the use of data, to
converge on principles, laws, and data relationships that inform us
about how nature operates. Numbers and statistics help us gauge
this progress and to heighten our confidence in the results.

PERSONAL NOTE TO THE EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS INSTRUCTOR

I would like to express my deep acknowledgment to our Educational

Statistics Instructor, Mr. Romeo M. Serrano, for being considerate, modest,
and intelligent for sharing his expertise beyond on any conflicts—time,
financial, distance, and students’ level of interest with different learning styles
in gaining this particular field because honestly, I hate Mathematics subject.

This is the reason why I didn’t accept to hold any mathematics subject
from Grade 7-12 but with him, I made impossible things possible! I explored
different numbers trying to understand how to collect data, analyse it,
summarized, interpreted, and used statistical methods. The Microsoft excel
which is very hard to operate when it comes to use data analysis is expressed
vividly! I never learned this during my college life. Besides, the one seat apart
technique during the exam is very challenging for me plus, the provision of
giving different sample problems cannot be determined by a simple solution
since you need to go deeper understanding in solving the problem. Because
of this, I learned to be independent, that, if others can do, why can’t I? proving
myself that I can change hardest things into simpler one.
‘Even Millions of Ink cannot fill in the entire scope of an ocean’ – that’s how
Educational Statistics stand my principle!—Thank you very much Sir not
because you are my instructor but you are a part of my journey making me an
effective Statistician (someday) and I learned now that we need to triple or
even more patient, considerate, and loving to our students. I salute you!
