Dharmavaram is a place located in Anantapur district which is famously known as


“silk city of Andhra Pradesh.” It is located 41km away from anantapur and 184 km
from Bangalore. It has a pleasant climate. Kriya Shakthi Vodavaru swami named
Dharmavaram after the name of his mother Dharmambai in the year 1153 –
54AD.

By 19th century silk handloom industry emerged as the main occupation. Paintings
on the roof wall of Lepakshi temple and Latha Mandapam depicts the designs of
Dharmavaram.

HANDLOOMS:

A loom is a device used to weave cloth and tapestry. The basic purpose of any
loom is to hold the warp threads under tension to facilitate the interweaving of
the weft threads. The precise shape of the loom and its machines may vary, but
the basic function is same. Handlooms use manpower and give the best output.
STAGES OF PRODUCTION:
The production of the Dharmavaram Sarees and Pavadas includes different stages
which includes

 Raw materials
 Quality of silk
 Degumming of silk purification
 Plying of Yarn
 Dyeing
 Drying

PRE-LOOM PROCESS:

 Winding of hank yarn into warp and weft


 Street sizing
 Weaving process
 Cutting and folding

USAGE:

The sarees are worn in winter or cold conditions, for functions and are mostly
used by dancers of Bharatha Natyam and Kuchipudi.
