TOPIC Percentage Composition of a Compound
GRADE LEVEL/Section 9/Scorpio and Gemini
Time Allotment/ Date January 14 -19, 2019
TEACHER Melvie V. Padayhag
Learning Competencies and Objectives
Learning Competency:
Determine the percentage composition of a compound. (S9MT-Iij-20)
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lessons, students should be able to:
1. Solve problems involving percentage composition;
2. Apply the concept of percentage composition in choosing grocery items; and
3. Realize the amount of substance intake that can be monitored with the use of percentage composition.

ELICIT Materials/ Assessment Tools

1. Activating prior knowledge by by asking a question:.
What does mole concept tell?
2. Let the students solve the given problem in relation to mole
concept.
3. Compute for the molar mass of glucose (C6H12O6) with a
mass of 245.52g and its number of particles is 1.205x1024.

ENGAGE Materials/ Assessment Tools

In a class of 50 students, 27 are girls and 13 are boys. What
percent of the class are boys and what percent are girls.  Animated picture of a pail
 Colored cards
(Ask the students how they computed the percentage of boys  Pentel pens
and girls in the class.)

In this lesson you will find out the percentage composition of the
mass made by each element in a compound.

EXPLORE Materials/ Assessment Tools

 Periodic table of Elements
Group the students into 10. Let them answer problem # 1 and 3  Manila Papers and Pens
on page 157.  Calculator
All odd-numbered groups will answer problem #1, while all even-
numbered groups will answer problem #3 using the general
formula for the percentage composition.

EXPLAIN Materials/ Assessment Tools

Each group will chose 1 representative to present and explain
their answers.

ELABORATE Materials/ Assessment Tools

Ask students to define percentage composition.

Teacher will give another activity to the students. Each group will
be given grocery item containers or packages from food
wrappers.
Procedure of the activity:
1. From the sample of containers or packages of grocery items
given, list the substances written as contents/ingredients on the
label.
2. Choose your substances from each type of grocery item. From
the chosen substances, determine the chemical formula from the
posted list.
3. Compute for the percentage composition of the substances
you have chosen/listed. (Using a periodic table.)

The teacher will ask the following questions based on the activity
performed:
1. What food do you regularly consume which gives your body a
lot of carbon (C) atoms and sodium (Na) ions.

2. Are these foods good for your body? Why?

EVALUATE Materials/ Assessment Tools

Solve the following problems involving percentage composition: Manila Paper
1. Calculate the percentage of nitrogen in the fertilizer urea ,
CO(NH2)2.
2. Determine the percentage composition of CaO?
Essay:
In what other ways can you make use of the concept on
percentage composition?

EXTEND Materials/ Assessment Tools

The roots of plants absorb the nutrients from the soil. For the
farmers, it is important to strengthen the root system of their
plants to ensure its growth.
Potassium is a mineral responsible for healthy root system. If you
were a farmer, which of the following fertilizers are you going to
use?
(Note: Show your computation of the percentage composition of
potassium from each compound.)

a) K2SO4 b) K2O
c) KCl d) K2CO3

TOPIC Organic Compounds and Their Uses
GRADE LEVEL/Section 9/Scorpio and Gemini
Time Allotment/ Date
TEACHER Melvie V. Padayhag
Learning Competencies and Objectives
Learning Competency:
Recognize the general classes and uses of organic compounds. (S9MT-IIg-16)

OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the different organic compounds.
2. Show appreciation on the uses of various organic compounds at home and in the community.
3. Construct a table showing examples of common organic compounds and
identify if it is Artificial or Natural
ELICIT Materials/ Assessment Tools
Activating prior knowledge by random questioning.  Manila Paper
 Begin the lesson by asking students, “What do you think of when you  Marking Pens
hear the word, organic”?
 Write down students thoughts on the board.
 The teacher determines students misconceptions on the word.
ENGAGE Materials/ Assessment Tools
The teacher shows pictures of different examples of common organic
compounds and let the students identify. At this point the teacher can ask the  Colored Pictures
student to share their opinions on the uses of the different organic compounds

shown.

EXPLORE Materials/ Assessment Tools

 LM
Group the students into three(3) and let them perform an activity  TG
involving Organic Compounds and Their Uses.
EXPLAIN Materials/ Assessment Tools
Each group will present their answers and report it to class, After the report, the  Rubrics
teacher discuss the following questions:  Manila Papers and Pens
1. What do you think are the uses of the compounds given?
2. Why do you think this kind of organic compounds are very important.
ELABORATE Materials/ Assessment Tools
At this point, the students learned the important uses of common organic
compounds that are commonly used. The teacher may add more inputs or Enrichment Activity
activity. Sheetts
Sample Enrichment Activity to further Elaborate the Lesson:
Given the following compounds, complete the table by checking whether the
following compounds are classified as Artificial or Natural.

EVALUATE Materials/ Assessment Tools

The teacher administers a short quiz.  TOS
1. How are organic compounds classified?  Manila Paper
2. Explain what is the difference between Artificial and Natural Organic
Compounds?
3. Cite at least 3 examples of common compounds and state their uses.
EXTEND Materials/ Assessment Tools
Make a product of common organic compounds and present the procedures in (Materials may vary)
class and also its uses.
