OBE Learning Program
(2nd Semester, S.Y. 2018-2019)

Course Code: STAT 1

Course Title: ELEMENTARY STATISTICS
Course Credit: 3 units

Course description:
This course provides the students with the fundamental understanding of probability and
statistics. It focuses on the collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and
probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence
intervals and hypothesis testing.

Course learning program: upon successful completion of this course, students will:
1. Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable
conclusions.
2. Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting
data.
3. Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of
probabilities and combinatorics. (Empirical and Quantitative)
4. Explain the role of probability in statistics.
5. Examine, analyze and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and
continuous random variables.
6. Describe and compute confidence intervals.
7. Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods. (Critical Thinking)

Course Requirements:
1. Punctual attendance and participation at all schedule class
2. Major Examinations (Prelim, Midterm, Semifinals and Finals)
3. Quizzes
4. Task Performances
5. Other basis course grades (assignments, recitation, participation in school organized
activities, etc.…)
6. Submission of requirements as stated in the performance tasks.

Classroom Rules and Policies:

1. Students are expected to exhibit honesty and integrity (cheating in any form or method is
subject to sanctions to be failed in the subject).
2. Participation of students in class discussions is highly encouraged.
3. Regular attendance is critical to the students’ success in this course. Material in the quizzes
and major examinations will be taken from lectures and discussions.
4. The teacher understands that students may need to miss a class at some point. They do not
have to provide the teacher with explanations for such occasions. They do not need to email
or call the teacher if they missed a class or know that they will miss a class for any reason.
The only exception is in the case of sickness that requires them to miss a quiz. In this case,
they will need to provide the teacher a medical certificate from the college physician stating
the reason for their absence.
5. No mobile phones are allowed inside the class however, students may use their
laptops/tablets/iPad/phablets during class provided that it is primarily related to the class
activity. Using any of these gadgets for other purposes is absolutely prohibited. If they are to
use laptops in class, they should occupy any of the front row seats.
6. No food are allowed inside the class.
7. Access to any social networking sites during class (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) is not allowed.
8. Students are expected to observe proper decorum and maintain cleanliness and orderliness
of the room (5S).
9. Plagiarism in any form is strictly prohibited.
