Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The activities and tools that I have planned for the students support the students and enhance their learning
by giving the students the opportunity to use multiple tools and media in order to compose their writing
piece and the lesson also gives the students the opportunity to set their own personal goals throughout
writing in order to complete the writing piece in the way that best suits them.
Lesson idea implementation:
To start the lesson, I will show the students the BrainPOP video over what is included in a five paragraph.
After this I will have a whole class discussion with the students over what they learned from the video. I will
then show the students a narrated PowerPoint over what is included in a five-paragraph video in order to give
the students two sources of information. I will then make the PowerPoint available for all of the students to
refer back to when writing five paragraph essays in order to give the students multiple sources of information
that include both the video and the PowerPoint. I will then give the students topics to write on and the
students will be required to type their five-paragraph informative essay over the topic assigned. They will
have the means to research their topic with laptops which could include a history topic or a reading topic. I
will then have the student use information from their papers in order to create a final project for the class.
The project will be a narrated PowerPoint that will include key points from their papers that the student will
present to the class.
This lesson should take about 30 minutes to implement and the paper that the students write should take
about 45 minutes. The teacher will use the students’ papers in order to access whether the students
understand the concept of how to write a five-paragraph essay and all of the components that are included in
this essay. I will conclude the lesson by asking the students if they learned anything new about what to
include in their five paragraph essays. I will provide feedback to the students by taking up their papers and
writing what they could improve on and what they did correctly in their paper. I will then pass back the
papers with the feedback and have students make corrections.

Reflective Practice:
I feel that the activities included in this lesson could impact student learning by being good visual
representations of what the teacher is looking for in their essays. The activities are able to be referred back to
by the students and the students will have multiple sources of information. I would further extend this lesson
by having the students complete a poster over their paper topic by pulling important facts from the paper in
order to present to the class.
