Semi- Final Examination
1ST Semester AY 2018-2019

If you were the counselor/ therapist, what approach are you going to use in the following situations?
(Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Existential, Behavioral or CBT) Explain and identify the technique/s
that you will likely use. Choose 2 from the 3 situations illustrated.

Case No.1

Mayen, 15, was the third of the four children and she followed a brother who is 5 years older
than her. Everybody seemed to be against her except her youngest sister who is quite close to her.
She believed that her mother loves her eldest sister and her brother most. Their grandmother who
lives with them loves her youngest sister most and her father was quite neutral with everybody.

Mayen wants to leave home and live by herself because she believes that she is being
treated badly and unfairly at home. She is being rebellious and engages in bad habits like too much
alcohol consumption.

Case No. 2

Rona, 29, had applied to be a religious sister. The Religious Formator noticed that
throughout the time Rona was staying with them for orientation and familiarization, the latter was
very aloof and was always very pensive. Her mind seemed to be wandering off all the time and she
made a lot of errors because she was very inattentive to the tasks at hand. The Formator saw these
as very poor signs for a vocation, and called Rona’s attention. Although Rona promised to change
her ways, change lasted only for a few days. Since she refused to tell what was bothering her,
Rona was directly told that if her ways remained, then it will be difficult for her to be accepted in the
convent.

Rona disclosed that her choice to be a religious sister is an escape. She grew up in a very
traditional family who believed that if you do not marry, then you enter a convent. Rona truly wants
to have her own family. But after she had sexual relationship with a man who did not end up to be
her boyfriend, she thinks that no man would accept her anymore. She was raised to believe that
virginity matters most in marriage. Therefore, she believes she has no choice but to enter a
convent, or else she will be a disgrace for the family.

Case No. 3

Jewel, 20, is a fourth year college student whose grades began to punctuate in the middle of
the semester. She was an honor student when she was in high school and an achiever during the
early years of her college. She enjoyed full scholarship until she got low grades in her major
subjects. Currently, she is only entitled to 50% tuition fee discount and she fears to totally lose her
scholarship if her grades continue to punctuate.

Jewel disclosed that last year, she found out that her father has another child from another
woman. Her step sister is just 3 years younger than her. All the while she idolizes her father too
much and thinks that they have a perfect family. This revelation affected her too much that her
studies began to suffer and she has experienced episodes of depression.
